Glen Boss will make his return to Australian racing with four midweek rides after ending his Singapore stay with a winning double.
Boss completed his overseas stint on Sunday with Kranji wins on Sacred Emblem and Dynamic Dan on an afternoon when former Victorian trainer Cliff Brown combined with ex-pat Australian jockey John Powell to claim the Singapore Derby.
“Things have been a little quiet and not going my way so I wanted to make a statement in my last day of riding,” Boss told the Singapore Turf Club’s website.
Boss has been booked to ride Tio Rossa, Finishing Card, Fashion Black and Stardom at Sandown on Wednesday.
His Singapore Derby mount finished down the track behind the Brown-trained Clint, a New Zealand-bred galloper who lowered the colours of star performer Better Than Ever.
Clint gave Brown his biggest success since his arrival in Singapore four years ago.
“He’s been pretty much bomb-proof throughout his time with us. The 2000 metre journey was perfect for him and he had a great draw,” Brown said.
“All that he needed was some luck from the draw, which he got, thanks to a great ride by Johnny.”
Powell ended a lean trot with his second Derby success, six years after riding Hello And Goodbye to victory in the race.
“Things haven’t been going too well for me of late but this might just be the thing to turns it around for me,” Powell said.
“To give Cliff his first Group win just adds to the victory. Cliff has been a great supporter of mine …”
New Zealand apprentice James McDonald, who made a lasting impression on Sydney trainers and punters with a winning double at Randwick on July 9, also showcased his talent on Derby day.
His Derby ride Martial Art finished midfield but he earlier combined with the galloper’s trainer Laurie Laxon to win a support race with Vaya Condios.
