Ryan Moore may have missed out in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but bookmakers have been left counting the cost of his wins on his other five rides on the program.
The much sought-after three-time champion jockey enjoyed racked up wins on Birchwood (11-1), Telescope (8-13 favourite), Adaay (4-1 favourite), Time Test (7-2) and Crystal Zvezda (7-2).
Moore, the winner of the Cox Plate on Adelaide and Melbourne Cup on Protectionist during the Australian spring, caught the bookies off guard.
“It’s been an horrendous day. Ryan Moore is the pre-eminent jockey of our time,” Ladbrokes’ David Williams said.
“When he strings together multiples on a big betting Saturday, it’s bad. When he strings five together, it’s horrific.
“The twist here is Integral getting beat in the Lockinge was a blessing in that it knocked out a few of the very big multiples, but that race went to the horse that had been favourite anyway. It was a case ‘out of the frying pan, into the fire’.
“When bookmakers have to say the best result of the day was when the feature race went to the favourite, it goes to show just how bad a day it was.”
Moore says he is not thinking of another jockeys’ title so early in the season.
“I thought I would have a chance of four winners today,” he said.
“But it has been a good day. Pity I didn’t win the Lockinge. I can’t remember how many five-timers I’ve had – not enough!”
