Ole Kirk shines at Inglis Great Southern Sale

Interest in Vinery Stud’s standout first-season stallion Ole Kirk continued to soar at the Inglis Great Southern Sale on Friday, where a third-crop filly fetched an impressive $475,000 in Melbourne.

The filly was bred by Gilgai Farm, who had sold her dam, Rainy Daze, for just $12,000 in April last year—with the high-priced filly still in utero at the time. The successful bidder was Cannon Hayes Stud’s Dave Morrissey, acting on behalf of Queensland-based owner Darren Wilson of Wilrace, a regular buyer on the circuit.

Ole Kirk, whose 2025 service fee has been increased to $99,000 (inc GST), has had other notable third-crop weanlings this year, including sales of $275,000 and $210,000, further underlining his desirability in the market.

Among other top results from the Great Southern Sale, a filly by Wootton Bassett presented by Rosemont Stud went for $350,000 to Peter Morgan and Gall Bloodstock. Meanwhile, Tasmania’s Grenville Stud—led by Graeme and Bart McCulloch—added a colt by Too Darn Hot to their growing collection for $335,000, continuing their strong run of high-end purchases this year.

The McCullochs were also active at the recent Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast, securing weanlings by Wootton Bassett and Zoustar for $220,000 apiece.

The 2025 edition of the Great Southern Sale featured 327 lots and reached a gross of $9.802 million, averaging $45,171 with a median of $22,000 and a clearance rate of 78 per cent.
