Patinack Farm started BTC Cup day on a winning note when Web Of Love scored a narrow win at Doomben.
In front of a huge crowd trackside to watch glamour mare Black Caviar later in the day, Web Of Love held on to beat the fast-finishing Motown Lady by a neck in the opening race, the Acadia Landscapes Class Six Plate (1615m).
Seeyou finished a short half-head away third in a blanket finish.
Punters were still making their way through the turnstiles as Web Of Love saluted for jockey Dwayne Dunn.
Patinack Farm trainer John Thompson gave Dunn full marks for a perfect display on the four-year-old daughter of Show A Heart.
Thompson had seven runners engaged at Scone on Saturday but decided to scratch them all to concentrate on Doomben which was staging the first Group One of the Brisbane winter carnival, the BTC Cup (1200m).
Thompson has no major winter plans in mind with Web Of Love who took her record to five wins from 17 starts.
“It was a super ride,” Thompson said.
“He rode her positive and got a positive result.
“She’s a mare with ability but she’s been playing up in the barriers.”
Thompson said Web Of Love was on her worst behaviour in the barriers when she missed the kick and finished 10th to Joyeux Joy at Eagle Farm on Anzac Day.
“We’ve been working on her to get her to relax in the barriers and it seems to be paying dividends,” Thompson said.
Dunn was always confident Web Of Love had her opposition’s measure once she jumped cleanly.
“She jumped with them and had to do a bit of work early,” Dunn said.
“I was hoping another one would take us further into the race but she was always in a forward position and ran on well.”
