Trainer Kim Waugh has ambitious hopes for Trumbull this spring

A series of minor setbacks have restricted Trumbull to just one start in the past eight months and trainer Kim Waugh is looking forward to kicking off his latest preparation with a clean slate.

Trumbull was spelled after suffering a foot abscess following his unplaced effort in The Hunter in November, then a virus ended his next campaign after just one run.

It has been a frustrating time for connections, but Waugh is rapt with how Trumbull has returned to work ahead of his resumption in the July Sprint (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The five-year-old is dynamic fresh, winning four of his seven first-up runs, and Waugh is again anticipating a bold showing despite his 61kg impost.

“He’s got a huge weight but I think he’ll still go great, although he’s got quite a bit of improvement in him,” Waugh said.

“He always races a bit big but I just find as he gets a bit older, he’s getting a bit bigger, like we all do.”

Trumbull has had a tendency to bomb the start in the past and that trait was again on display in his first barrier trial at Wyong when he missed the jump by several lengths.

He began more cleanly in his second hitout at Gosford and Waugh has no qualms about him getting a clear start on Saturday with regular jockey Tommy Berry in the saddle.

“Alysha (Collett) rode him at Wyong and she’d never ridden him before, but she said he was just really fresh and was mucking around in the stalls,” Waugh said.

“Tommy rode him at Gosford and he was OK. I think we’ve worked him out now.”

Waugh has pencilled in the Tramway Stakes as an early campaign target for the Sydney Stakes winner, while also flagging him as a potential candidate for The Everest if he can strike his best form.

Two of the past three winners of the Sydney Stakes – Pierata (2018) and In Her Time (2017) – both returned to contest The Everest the following spring

“He’s around at the right time. At his best and doing it all right, he’s a very good horse as we know, and the sectionals he runs are quite amazing,” Waugh said.

The Wyong trainer will also saddle up recent stable addition Misteed in the City Tattersalls Club Handicap (1200m) and said the mare had continued to do well since her last-start second to Van Giz.
