The running of the 2010 Melbourne Cup is shaping as a memorable one. New superstar So You Think continues to shorten after his breathtaking win in the Mackinnon Stakes on Saturday and by the way he dismissed his rivals, those who doubted his ability to run the distance are starting to reconsider.
The new kid on the block is Maluckyday and while inexperienced he is thrown into the race with just 51kg. The best form for the Cup has always been the Caulfield Cup with Descarado hoping the rain continues and last year’s winner Shocking is proven at the distance.
Manighar also ran a nice fifth in that race and although Americain has been the best supported of the International horses, Manighar was unlucky to beaten by him the last time they met. Lloyd Williams has always been keen to win this race and his young stayer Linton is reminiscent of 2007 winner Efficient.
Bart might have the hot favourite but he also has Precedence, while the Godolphin camp was lucky to get Holberg into the race, but he now becomes a live chance. History shows that a ‘roughie’ usually runs a place at big odds and often it is one of the international horses that surprises, so Illustrious Blue, Tokai Trick and Campanologist might have to be included in multiples.
It is a terrific field with a worthy favourite and a fitting celebration of one of the greatest races in the world.
