Read what the jockeys said after the Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm.
WINNING JOCKEY
James McDonald (Providence): Getting on Chris Waller’s best horses: “Yeah, well that’s always a good start, but he has a lot of good good horses and clashing all the time, so you obviously um put put your trust in the stable and hope that we are on the best one and he’s normally pretty right all the time and he he looks after us very well.
Providence being more effective when ridden quieter: “Yeah, it’s just taken us four preps to work that out, but we’ve got there in the end. He’s ran out pretty strong. To be fair, I couldn’t have dreamed up a better run. It just worked out so, so well. He had such a resting run the first half and was able to just build into it when I wanted to. And he was strong.
“He’s probably not a true stayer, but at ten furlongs, he’s pretty sharp and he’s just come a long way in a short time. He’s a lovely horse to do anything with and great attitude.”
Good race tempo: “Yeah, it was a nice flying race and um yeah, there was no real well on my on my part, there was no real hiccup at all because um he he ducked in late, but it was because he was tired, but he’s he’s done a good job.”
BEATEN JOCKEYS
Ryan Maloney (Kilman): “Got to the lead nice enough. It was probably more that he’s come to the end of a long prep and he probably didn’t get the trip. He’ll be a better hose next Spring.”
Ben Thompson (One Step Closer): “Yeah, no joy. Adopted positive tactics today but it didn’t make a difference. He was beaten a long way out.
Mark Zahra (Different Gravy): “Yeah it was a credible effort run fourth”
Tim Clark (Options): “He probably didn’t see out the trip. Back in trip next time.”
Ben Melham (Monopolistic): “Had a sweet trip, just couldn’t beat the strength.”
Tom Sherry (Southern Prince): “Disappointing. He wasn’t good enough today.”
Lachlan Neindorf (Amazake): Unavailable.
Ethan Brown (O’sheamus): “He was very plain. He was the first horse beaten. Maybe something amiss.
Jason Collett (Defendant): “Nice run. It was alright just couldn’t go with them.”
John Allen (Accidental Bid): “A bit disappointing. He had a nice enough run but he’s still six months younger than them. He’ll be a nice horse going forward.”
Luke Nolen (Buthelezi): “I think he’s pulled up with an issue. He collapsed underneath me and they can work it out post race.”
Adam Hyeronimus (Falcon Lair): “He can definitely stay, but he just needs a bit of time to strengthen up.”
Nash Rawiller (Michelangelo): “No pickup speed when I needed it.”
Jordan Childs (Chillies): “I think he’s going to be a nice horse next prep.”
Jamie Melham (Inspired Legend): “Massive run by the horse. He made up a lot of ground and ran a really good race.”
Tommy Berry (Solid Gold): “Baffled with the performance today. We ended up getting a really good run and I was pretty confident at the top of the straight but didn’t have much to offer.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Beauty Swift): “He ran well. He ran forward and got into a good spot. His best distanceis probably 2000m.”
