Co-trainer Mick Price has thrown his full support behind the decision to withdraw Globe from Saturday’s Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, describing it as “absolutely the correct call.”
The talented gelding failed a mandatory trot-up before Racing Victoria veterinarians on Thursday, where he was being assessed for a known fetlock irritation. During the inspection, vets also detected an unexpected cardiac arrhythmia, prompting immediate withdrawal from the $6 million weight-for-age feature.
“I totally agree with the findings,” Price told Racing.com. “That horse was not 100 per cent in his action, and he’ll be spelled and get ready for the autumn.”
Price revealed the heart irregularity came as a surprise discovery during standard testing procedures.
“As part of their routine examination, they do a heart reading and, strangely, that horse had an irregular rate and rhythm — that was going to be another issue we were totally unaware of,” he said.
“He would’ve been unable to run regardless, and the correct decision has been made, no doubt about it.”
The withdrawal leaves a field of just eight runners for Saturday’s Cox Plate (2040m), headlined by defending champion Via Sistina and fellow contenders Antino, Aeliana and Mr Brightside.
