Just as they did on Everest Day, the trio of Chris Waller, Tommy Berry and the flying filly Panova took out the opening race on the Victoria Derby card at Flemington with the three-year-old again showing an impressive turn of foot to claim a second successive win in emphatic style.
Panova now has two Group 3 wins to her credit … the Reg Allen in Sydney, and now the Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington … as well as two runner-up finishes from only five starts, and she has already pushed her prize-money bank up to $467,455.
“The stable has great record in the race, so it was good to see that continuing on from the many great horses that have won it in the past,” said Charlie Duckworth, spokesman for the Waller stable.
‘Tommy (Berry) didn’t panic. When they raced and separated into two sort of different divisions in the early stages, I was a bit worried, but Tommy just had plenty of faith in the horses.
“It was pretty much the way he rode her last start in Sydney … don’t panic, rely on the fact she has a good turn of foot … and we were confident she would stay the distance as well, so, yeah, the ride was the same as last time.” (Panova was stepping to from 1400m to 1600m here).
Duckworth indicated that Panova is most likely to go to the paddock now but emphasised that Waller and the filly’s connections have yet to confirm the path forward.
