The Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable is banking on some soft ground proving beneficial for Bossy Nic at Morphettville.
Bossy Nic heads to the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) on Saturday looking to add another Stakes victory to her record.
The McEvoy father-and-son training team had considered Saturday’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m), also at Morphettville, but felt the softer fillies and mares’ option was more to their liking for Bossy Nic.
Bossy Nic was successful in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in her second career start as a two-year-old and was thought of as being good enough to head to Sydney for their Autumn Carnival post that victory.
However, Bossy Nic has been unable to rekindle that form, although she boasts four wins from her 29 starts and almost $740,000, but she has not been successful again in Stakes company.
She did though run third in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last spring.
Bossy Nic has had two runs this campaign, both on wet ground, and has filled a place on each occasion, finishing second first-up at Flemington then third most recently at Caulfield on April 11.
With Morphettville rated in the soft range on Saturday, it was good news for Calvin McEvoy.
“She wants cut in the ground,” McEvoy said.
“She’s a nice mare, she’s going well and is a capable mare on her day and as soon as she gets some soft ground, she improves, which is what she’s had two runs this time in.”
Bossy Nic sits on the third line of betting for Saturday’s contest with Aviatress the $4.20 top elect from Naifah at $4.40.
Senior rider Daniel Stackhouse takes the ride on Saturday after apprentice Jackson Radley had ridden the mare in her two runs this campaign.
