Last years Melbourne Cup favourite Yucatan has stepped up his work as he nears a return to racing.
Yucatan jumped as the favourite in last years Melbourne Cup but finished a disappointing eleventh in the race which could have been attributed to the wet conditions.
Yucatan won the Herbert Power Stakes impressively before connections opted to bypass the Caulfield Cup where he was the short priced all-in favourite.
The former Irish stayer has not been seen since his run in the Melbourne Cup but Team Williams have lofty plans this Spring with the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup his main targets.
“He’s really good, he’s working away and he’ll probably be ready to run in the first or second week of September,” Williams told RSN927.
“We trained him through the autumn but just didn’t take him to the races and he’s ready to go now.
“The Feehan is an option for him and there are some other options further down the track.
“He’s got a bit of a campaign ahead of him and the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup are certainly on the agenda and we’ll let him tell us where we should go with him.
“I think Yucatan probably ticks the boxes everywhere, what we saw of him last year was as exciting as any horse you’d ever see, so for the Cups I’d have to say he’s out number one seed.”
Yucatan is a $51 chance in current Melbourne Cup odds.
