Magic Millions hopefuls step out at traditional lead-up meeting at Wyong

Jason Collett would love for history to repeat at Wyong this Wednesday, but perhaps not beyond that.

The top New South Wales jockey will team with Paradoxium in the $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m).

It is a race Collett won last year on O’ Ole, who went on to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast, but with Tommy Berry in the saddle after Collett opted to ride Icarian Dream in the $3 million feature.

Collett is excited about reuniting with Paradoxium, whom he partnered to a debut fourth placing, beaten 1.55 lengths, in the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) on October 4.

The son of Extreme Choice has impressively won two trials since and Collett would love to see a performance that demands he sticks with the colt on the Gold Coast.

“He has got a lot of class about him, a lot of speed, it’s just a case of harnessing it,” Collett said.

“I like him. He has come back better, a bit more furnished from that first preparation and first run.”

Paradoxium, a $400,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, is part of a field of eight for Wednesday’s race, which has proven a good guide to the Gold Coast finale.

Unencumbered and Capitalist are others to complete the Wyong/Gold Coast double, while Madeenaty, She’s All Class and Highness all placed in the Gold Coast race after winning at Wyong.

Farnan and Jonker also won the Wyong 2YO Classic before going on to claim Group 1 glory before their career was over.

Paradoxium is one of two Bjorn Baker-trained runners in the Wyong 2YO Classic, joined by Gimcrack Stakes third placegetter Masvingo, a daughter of Zoustar who will be ridden by Kerrin Mcevoy.

Seeiaye and Mystical, the quinella from the Max Lees Classic at Newcastle, are also engaged along with four first-starters from some of the highest-profile stables in the country.

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have Celtic Sky and Anthony and Sam Freedman are represented by Belvante, both sons of Farnan who finished second and third respectively behind Paradoxium in his November 21 trial.

Hawkes Racing will unveil $400,000 Wootton Bassett colt Marwooba, while Ciaron Maher will be represented by Behindcloseddoors, a daughter of Home Affairs who cost $250,000.

The 2YO Classic is one of two Magic Millions features at Wyong on Wednesday, joined by the $150,000 Wyong 3&4YO Stakes (1200m), in which Collett will ride O’ Ole.

No horse has won both Wyong Magic Millions races and Collett is confident O’ Ole can bounce back from her poor run in the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on Derby Day.

“She was a bit above herself the day she resumed in Melbourne but she had a trial the other day and went really well,” he said.

O’ Ole will start from barrier two, to the immediate outside of King Of Roseau, while the other prominent in betting is former Magic Millions 2YO Classic placegetter Spywire (barrier four).
