Renowned jockey Kerrin McEvoy, known for his numerous victories in prestigious races like the Melbourne Cup and The Everest, faces a period of enforced rest after sustaining a fractured vertebrae in a harrowing fall during the Birthday Card Stakes at Rosehill Gardens on Golden Slipper day.
The fall occurred when McEvoy’s mount, Tintookie, encountered a catastrophic injury, necessitating euthanasia. Though conscious at the time of departure from the track, McEvoy was transported to Westmead Hospital due to lower back and hip discomfort, with his neck stabilized as a precautionary measure.
Following a consultation with a spinal specialist on Sunday morning, it was revealed that McEvoy had sustained a fracture to the C6 vertebrae. Fortunately, surgical intervention is unnecessary, and the fracture is expected to heal naturally over time. However, this setback will force McEvoy to sit out both days of The Championships as he focuses on his recovery.
