Hong Kong’s upcoming Champions Day fixture has attracted a strong list of nominations from Australian trainers, with Annabel Neasham and Chris Waller among those nominating a number of stable stars for the drawcard event on Hong Kong’s racing calendar.
Neasham has nominated several stable stars including last year’s All-Star Mile and Champions Stakes winner Zaaki, Crystal Mile victor My Oberon, Toorak Handicap placegetter Military Expert, and Laws Of Indices. Meanwhile, Waller has nominated Nature Strip and September Run for the Chairman’s Sprint Prize, as well as Hinged and classy import El Bodegon for the QEII Cup and Champions Mile, respectively.
Other Australian contenders include Mike Moroney’s Roch ‘N’ Horse, Clayton Douglas’ Giga Kick, and Julius Sandhu’s Lofty Strike, who is seen as a likely contender for the Chairman’s Sprint Prize pending his performance in the Group 1 T.J. Smith.
Hong Kong’s head of racing product, Greg Carpenter, is optimistic about Australian participation at the event and is hoping to attract at least one Australian sprinter to Hong Kong.
“The challenge is now to get the horses on the ground. We are very hopeful we will get at least one Australian sprinter,” Carpenter said.
The Champions Day fixture, which features a range of top-class races, is set to take place next month in Hong Kong.
