It generally goes in breeding that siblings race the same way.
You know, if one can sprint, they all can sprint.
If one likes to stay all day, the others have staying powers too.
Well, read on, as this is a story that defies all that.
We all watched the stunning, awesome speed display by Kiamichi (Sidestep-Ouachita) on Saturday to win the Gr 1 Golden Slipper quite easily, elevating her sire, Sidestep to the top of Freshman Sires list, while pretty much assuring herself the Champion 2YO Filly of Australia title, and leading home a Godolphin clean sweep in the Slipper in the process.
And she did it from an outside gate at that! Just pure sustained speed and lots of it.
Well, this might come as a shock to you to know that her big brother is also going to race in a Gr 1 race in a couple of weeks. And he doesn’t have any pace.
His name is Cossetot and he is headed to the Gr 1 $2million ATC Australian Derby over 2400m on 6 April.
He already has won the Tasmanian Derby over 2200m and has been placed his past couple of runs in the Gr 2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield over 1800m and the Gr 2 Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley over 2040m.
Cossetot (Epaulette-Ouachita) is as honest as the day is long and is looming as Godolphin’s best chance in the upcoming Derby.
That would be some sort of feat for the Blue Army – winning the richest juvenile race on the planet over 1200m, then scant days later winning the most prestigious Derby in Australia over 2400m with her brother.
And this bloke Cossetot can stay all day.
Their mother, Ouachita (Canny Lad-Peach) never raced but the family is pretty special.
Ouachita is the half-sister to a pair of Gr 1 winners in current impressive sire Denman as well as the impressive Preserve who has produced a stakes winner in her sire son Safeguard.
Some family tree, hey?
