Golden Slipper day at Rosehill boasts $7.5 million prizemoney spread over nine races, the richest program on the Australian calendar.

There are five Group One features with the jewel in the crown the $3.5 million Golden Slipper, the world’s richest race for two-year-olds.

The $2.25 million BMW is the country’s richest 2400-metre weight-for-age race and the big two are ably supported by the Queen Of The Turf, George Ryder and Vinery Stud Storm Queen Stakes.

Held at Rosehill Racecourse in the heart of Sydney at Parramatta, the meeting promises something for everyone and is a spectacular day of thoroughbred excellence.

GOLDEN SLIPPER (1200m for two-year-olds): The showpiece of juvenile racing in the world, the Golden Slipper has become one of the most important events for the breeding industry. Not only does victory consolidate the position of the winner’s sire, if a colt wins it ensures his own future at stud.

Three colts, Sepoy, Smart Missile and Foxwedge are the first three favourites but in a 16-horse scamper, anything can happen.

Sepoy, who is raced by Sheikh Mohammed, has been the raging favourite for months but has eased in the past couple of weeks after a chink showed up in his armour.

He was beaten in the Todman Stakes on a rain-affected track by the Anthony Cummings-trained Smart Missile who had track watchers in awe earlier this week with his final serious hit-out at Randwick.

Perhaps the forgotten horse is Karuta Queen, the flying filly from Queanbeyan who won the Magic Millions in January but was surprisingly beaten in the Black Opal Stakes. Her trainer Neville Layt says she is now back to her best and ready to run the race of her life.

Clarry Conners is one of three trainers with runners this year to have won the Slipper four times, most recently in 2000 with Belle Du Jour.

He is represented by Satin Shoes who also suffered a shock last-start defeat in the wet and her trainer’s only concern is the weather.
The last of Lee Freedman’s four Slippers came in 1996 with Merlene and he saddles up Masthead who finished third to Sepoy in the Blue Diamond, Melbourne’s premier two-year-old race.

Bart Cummings has waited more than three decades since his last win with Century Miss in 1979 and has two confirmed runners, Salade and Empress Rock, with emergency Do You Think waiting in the wings.

The Cummings horses are the least experienced in the race with all three emerging with debut wins over the past two weeks.

It is an enormous step but if anyone can do it, Australia’s living legend can.

THE BMW (2400 metres weight-for-age): The BMW boasts an honour roll that includes modern-day greats Makybe Diva, Ethereal, Tie the Knot, Might And Power and Octagonal.

This year the focus is on Maluckyday, runner-up in the 2010 Melbourne Cup and the early favourite to go one better in November.

He has yet to win a Group One race but the BMW has been a long-time autumn target. He didn’t enjoy the slippery ground when fourth in the recent Ranvet Stakes won by 100-1 shot Zavite in a fighting finish from Caulfield Cup winner Descarado.

They will be among his opponents again along with Ranvet third placegetter Hawk Island and Melbourne visitors Mourayan, Linton, Cedarberg, Extra Zero and Laristan, Ginga Dude from New Zealand and Illustrious Blue who remained in Australia after competing in the Melbourne Cup.

THE GEORGE RYDER STAKES (1500 metres weight-for-age): Previously known as the Railway Handicap, the weight-for-age race was renamed in 1973 to honour George Ryder, the man whose vision and persistence were behind the creation of the Golden Slipper.

This year’s field in headed by warhorse Theseo, winner of the Ranvet Stakes in 2009-10 and fourth in the 2010 BMW.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding has had an interrupted preparation and will wear blinkers for the first time in four years to try to recapture winning form.

It won’t be easy with nine Group One winners in the 15-horse field including Danleigh who is defending his title.

The Chris Waller-trained Danleigh claimed the first Group One of the Sydney carnival when he beat Ryder opponent Centennial Park in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

His stablemates Rangirangdoo, winner of the Doncaster Mile, and up-and-comer Triple Elegance are also well in the mix.

New Zealand’s two best weight-for-age horses, Wall Street and King Mufhasa, have a point to prove.

King Mufhasa has run third in the past two George Ryders and beat Wall Street in their last clash at home.

THE VINERY STUD STORM QUEEN STAKES (2000 metres for three-year-old fillies): The traditional lead-up and vital guide to the AJC Australian Oaks a couple of weeks later.

It is the first time most of the fillies have stepped up to 2000 metres and an indication of whether they will be able to go another 400 metres in the Oaks.

The proven performer is the Mike Moroney-trained Brazilian Pulse, winner of the VRC Oaks in the spring who is on a seven-day back-up from her victory in the Keith Nolan Classic.

She is the dominant favourite with punters selecting another two Melbourne fillies as her main dangers.

Do Ra Mi and Pinker Pinker are both last-start winners at home but yet to be tested racing in the clockwise direction.

QUEEN OF THE TURF STAKES (1500 metres weight-for-age fillies and mares): More Joyous will start the shortest-priced favourite on the day and for good reason. If it wasn’t for unbeaten champion sprinter Black Caviar, More Joyous would be hailed as the best horse in the country.

As it is she is superior over 1400 to 1600 metres and although the other six runners are quality mares, it would be a major upset if one of them beat her.

More Joyous is trained by Gai Waterhouse for John Singleton, a man who loves a celebration and probably already has it planned, and justifiably so.
