Ex-AFL chief Gillon McLachlan expressed his ongoing passion for horse racing, suggesting it might lead him to play a role in the industry moving forward.
Speaking on Channel Seven during an interview at Morphettville, where his horse was competing in the South Australian Derby, McLachlan discussed with Bruce McAvaney the possibility of joining Racing Victoria, potentially even as chairman—a role that has been speculated about.
“I’m very passionate about racing,” McLachlan shared during the Derby broadcast. “I need to figure out the financial logistics concerning my home and family first, but if all aligns, I would be eager to contribute to Racing Victoria as chairman if the opportunity arises and they see fit.”
He added, “There’s still a lot to consider and several steps to be taken, but I am ready to help the racing community if there’s a way I can be of service.”
McLachlan, who recently took a significant break after nearly 25 years with the AFL, mentioned that he’s been enjoying his downtime but is now beginning to reconnect with the industry and explore potential roles.
However, the day’s races didn’t turn out favourably for McLachlan and his co-owners. Their horse, A Samurai Mind, priced at $31 with betting sites, ended up finishing 15th, trailing the winner Coco Sun by over 13 lengths.
