A heartfelt memorial service for trainer Mike Moroney was held at Flemington on Tuesday, with family, friends, and industry leaders sharing tributes.
Younger brother Paul described Mike as “a champion person” and “a bloody good bloke,” highlighting his fairness and humility. He added that his brother never gave empty praise, always acting with kindness.
Moroney’s daughter Aliesha spoke about his optimism, resilience, and his superstitions, notably with the number six. She connected this belief to his 2000 Melbourne Cup win with Brew, carrying saddlecloth number 24, which adds to six.
Grandson Lincoln described his grandfather as a superstar trainer who showed love through bear hugs. Longtime friend Greg Childs recalled the pride he felt watching his children ride winners for Moroney, noting his respect for others.
Chris Waller, who was inspired by Moroney’s training methods, called him a “true legend of the sport.”
Moroney’s influence was evident in the tributes, and his final winner, Bancory Bay, was a testament to his lasting legacy. His funeral will take place in New Zealand next week.
