For the second time in a decorated career, Chautauqua has come from an almost impossible position to win the Group One TJ Smith Stakes.
Chautauqua gave away 12 lengths to the leaders as he settled last in the $2.5 million weight-for-age sprint at Randwick.

In a replica of his 2015 win, Tommy Berry asked Chautauqua to improve at the 600m but the sprinter’s task still appeared forlorn as his stablemate Our Boy Malachi took the field into the straight.
Produced wide out, Chautauqua ($3.60) reeled in the leaders at the 100m and the grey ran away to beat Fell Swoop ($15) and English ($9).
“If we take him overseas we’re going to have a ride aren’t we,” Berry said.
Chautauqua’s win gave Berry back-to-back Group One wins on Saturday after Tavago upset his more-fancied rivals in the ATC Australian Derby.
