Caulfield Cup winner Descarado looks likely to have a new jockey for the Melbourne Cup.
Ridden by Chris Munce to win the Caulfield Cup, trainer Gai Waterhouse has indicated that stable jockey Nash Rawiller will take over for the Melbourne Cup.
Descarado was yesterday given a 1.5kg penalty for the Melbourne Cup to take his weight to 54kg for the race that stops the nation.
This is the absolute minimum at which Rawiller can ride, and as such he is likely to take the ride.
Trainer Gai Waterhouse was upfront when discussing the jockey situation.
“Nash is my stable jockey. If he gets his weight, he rides them,” Waterhouse said to the Daily Telegraph.
“If they don’t get his weight, the others like Chris Munce or Glyn Schofield ride them.
However, Chris Munce believes that he has been booked to ride Descarado in both Cups.
There will still be an opportunity for Munce to ride for Waterhouse, with AJC Oaks winner Once Were Wild looking to put her Melbourne Cup campaign back on track in tomorrow’s Geelong Cup.
Once Were Wild has 51.5kg in the Melbourne Cup.
Even if she wins tomorrow will still be outside Rawiller’s weight range, making Munce the most likely to ride in the Melbourne Cup.
