Asfoora falls short in King Charles III Stakes defence

Asfoora’s attempt to go back-to-back in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes fell short, with the Henry Dwyer-trained mare finishing fifth in this year’s renewal at Royal Ascot.

Despite travelling well into the race and appearing ready to launch a challenge, Asfoora was unable to match the closing speed of her main rivals in the final stages.

The race was won by American Affair, who narrowly edged out Frost At Dawn in a close finish, while Regional—last year’s runner-up—again filled the minor placing in third.

Later on the card, the Group 1 St James’ Palace Stakes was claimed in dominant fashion by Field Of Gold, who confirmed his status as the standout European three-year-old miler. The Irish 2000 Guineas winner powered past French Guineas hero Henri Matisse, with English Guineas winner Ruling Court back in third.

Field Of Gold’s win mirrored the achievement of his sire Kingman, who also captured the same race. It was the fourth victory in the St James’ Palace Stakes for John Gosden, who now trains in partnership with his son Thady.

Owned by Juddmonte, Field Of Gold is out of a sister to Australian Group 2 winner and successful stallion Puissance De Lune, adding an Antipodean link to his elite performance.

Earlier in the day, Aidan O’Brien’s promising juvenile Gstaad lived up to expectations with a commanding win in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes. The unbeaten colt, by Starspangledbanner, is a half-brother to Vandeek—set to stand at Arrowfield Stud—both out of the Exceed And Excel mare Mosa Mine.
