Do you come from a racing family?
Born into it, Dad is my training partner and he has been training 50 odd years.
What is your first racing memory?
Picking up tickets off the ground at the races looking for winners when I was about ten.
Who are the best horses you’ve been involved with?
Quays – I looked after her for her spring three-year-old campaign; he had six starts and four wins that prep. Al Maher, I won a jump-out Flemington before he won and we bought a new float from the punt!
And the best horse you have seen?
Best I’ve seen in the flesh is Nelly (Black Caviar).
Do you have any promising young horses for racing fans to look out for?
Lady Of Five potentially our best.
Who do you admire most in racing?
Gai Waterhouse and Clarry Conners.
Who is your ‘what if’ horse?
Plenty of what ifs haha – bloody track work super stars who promise the world and deliver an atlas. We’ve all got them!
Funniest racing moment?
When we won the Rough Habit Stakes and the strapper hugged me that hard, I’m pretty sure he broke a rib haha!
Favourite racing moment?
That win was pretty special but winning this year’s Magic Millions Country Cup with Sir Carter was amazing.
If you could time travel into a past racing moment what would it be?
Would love to travel back in time when crowds were massive watching greats like TJ train every Saturday – with a massive bookmakers ring – and when it didn’t cost your first born to go to the races!
Which horse of the past would you most like to have trained?
Would love a horse like Takeover Target and just travel the world with him.
Which horse of the present would you most like to have in your stable?
Wouldn’t mind Sheza Alibi – she did stay at my place during the Brisbane winter.
What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?
Golf is the best escape. I have a love/hate relationship with it!
Favourite T.V shows, movie, book?
Seinfeld and The Simpsons – Old School – the Bill Waterhouse book (What Are The Odds?).
Best concert you’ve been to?
Steve Aoki.
What slogan summarizes your outlook on life?
Don’t care what other people think of you, if you’re honest with yourself then nobody else’s opinion matters.
Favourite food?
Pepperoni pizza.
Favourite track?
The old Caulfield; I wish people still trained there.
If you weren’t a racehorse trainer what would you be doing?
Probably be a sports players agent.
