A capacity field has been assembled for the Australian Guineas (1600m) this Saturday at Flemington.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2025 Australian Guineas.
2025 Australian Guineas Runner Preview:
1. Goldrush Guru: Goldrush Guru is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. Barrier trial first up in the Durbridge before going to the CS Hayes when ridden with far more intent and he ran a much improved race in defeat behind Sepals. The rise to 1600m, firmer footing, hard fit, class…has to be respected.
2. Savaglee: Always to be respected does the Kiwi raiders…but compared to previous years, I don’t think he’s at the level of previous Kiwi raiders and to me, last start showed me that 1600m at this level is a bridge too far.
3. Feroce: Feroce is hard to beat. He resumed two weeks back in the CS Hayes where he looked the one in the run but he didn’t fire when asked for the effort, with Billy Egan saying as much post race, that he didn’t handle the conditions. Much better on top of the ground and he has class in his own right.
4. Angel Capital: I’ve got most Group l races wrong this season to penning a horse and saying it’s got none, it’s a false favourite etc…but, I am going to say Angel Capital is a false favourite. The first up win at Caulfield was a barrier trial, it came down to the most brilliant horse, which he was. No place to hide here in a hard run 1600m and I think the Caulfield Guineas showed that 1600m is not his go.
5. Henlein: I think Henlein is a big, big improver from the CS Hayes. It was a day where the track was quite shifty and either you handled the track or not. He didn’t, but he wasn’t alone. He had trialled very well leading in and now up to 1600m, firmer deck, I think he can bounce back big time.
6. Red Aces: Just a run fresh in the CS Hayes. Wait til he gets to 2000m+.
7. Point And Shoot: Uncle Bjorn has been dominating Sydney. Can he translate it to Melbourne with this guy, who has been just shooting the lights out recently, albeit in weaker races than this, but he has been very dominant and will do no work from the inside gate.
8. Stay Focused: Gave a good sight on speed in the CS Hayes but just felt the pinch and with that in mind, I can’t entertain him here.
9. Opening Address: Didn’t do a bad job in the CS Hayes but I don’t think he’s up to these.
10. Ndola: Got a good run into the race in the CS Hayes and rightfully ran on to run second to Sepals. He’s got a tricky draw to contend with here and I think there are others from the CS Hayes with more upside than him.
11. Royal Insigna: He’s a big improver from the CS Hayes. He is just one horse who didn’t let down at all on the shifty track and was nearer the inside, which was quicksand. Back on top of the ground, off the first up run/win, he can take this out.
12. Sepals: Got the A1 run in transit in the CS Hayes but still had to take advantage and that he did, winning by a space and was strong late. The 1600m is fine, lands in a plum spot and will be hard to beat.
13. Savour The Dream: He’s a good horse from QLD and has change up speed when cuddled, as seen in his past couple of wins. Different gravy here, but he’s been too good for them up in Brisbane. Keen to see how he goes against these.
14. Detroit City: Had every chance in the Autumn Stakes and was weak late behind Angel Capital. Blinkers omn but has too much ground to make up.
15. Plymouth: Got none IMO. Had every chance walking them in front in the Autumn Stakes and was no match late for Angel Capital. I think he’s better ridden with a sit, but I don’t think he’s up to these.
16. Another Prophet: SCR
17. Statuario (First Emergency): Statuario should appreciate a rise to 1600m after resuming over 1400m a few weeks back where he got back in a slowly run race and while he was never a winning threat, he kept finding the line and was pretty good in defeat. Fitter and up in trip, he’s a rough first four hope.
18. Nostringsattached (Second Emergency): SCR

$10 Win/$40 Place on Goldrush Guru and Henlein.

Think the tempo will be quite genuine here. I suspect Goldrush Guru will settle handy from the good draw but will opt for a sit with the likes of Savaglee, Stay Focused, Feroce and Opening Address all looking to settle near the front. CS Hayes winner Sepals lands in a plum spot.
