Toorak Handicap 2022 – Race Result, Replay and Horse Ratings

The Spring of jockeys winning their first Group l continued in the Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday with Jarrod Fry getting his first major, piloting the Lindsey Smith trained Tuvalu to victory.

1. Tuvalu: Can’t begrudge him the win given how consistent he has been throughout his career, and it provided Jarrod Fry with his first major. He put the horse into a lovely spot, in the box seat, and once the gaps came, the horse took advantage and was strong in winning.

Rating: 8.5/10

2. Laws Of Indices: Given the circumstances, he was the run of the race, and by some distance. He just got a mile out of his ground and those in front of him weren’t taking him into the race. He made the run himself out widest and really, his effort was absolutely enormous.

3. Military Expert: Got outside Gentleman Roy quite comfortably in the run and was trucking under Jamie Kah. He didn’t quite quicken when asked for the big effort but stayed on and was very sound in running third. He’s on track for a race like the Champions Mile.

Rating: 8/10

4. Gentleman Roy: Had control in front, which surprised some, but that was due to Buffalo River happy to sit three wide on speed, not put the pressure on. That allowed Gentleman Roy to pinch a furlong or two mid race and he kept on for fourth.

5. I Wish I Win: Given the weight of support in betting and the expectation, you’d have to mark him down as very disappointing. I thought he was out and moving early enough to finish his race off and win but he was plain late and was safely held. The hype with him isn’t real.

6. Pinstriped: Got on the back of I Wish I Win, which on paper seemed the right move, but the horse didn’t drag him into the race. That, and the horse wanted to lay in again under pressure. I think a set of Blinkers or Winkers, some form of headgear, can sharpen him up.

7. Noname Lane: He ran out of his skin I thought. Outclassed on paper I thought but he measured up for sure. Gpt the 1/1 sit and tried his guts out. Wouldn’t be out of place in the Champions Mile at a price if they head that way.

Rating: 6/10

8. Character: Not sure he was 100% happy on the seven day back up but he stuck to the task well enough. I reckon he’s one of a few here to keep an eye on with the Champions Mile in mind.

Rarting: 4/10

9. Dalasan: He’s been a good horse for connections. But the connections have been aiming too high with him. He’s not a Melbourne/Sydney Group l class horse. He was plain late.

Rating: 3/10

10. Bankers Choice: I think he’s crying out for Flemington. He got a mile back in the run and was never a factor, but the last 100m of his race suggests he’s racing well. Just want to see him on a big track before binning him.

Rating: 5/10

11. Buffalo River: Wide no cover for the trip and actually seemed to relax okay out there. But 1600m at this level is always a query with him and given the run, he had to tire, and did.

Rating: 3/10

12. Converge: Got into the three wide line with plenty of cover so he had a decent enough in transit, but when he was asked for the effort, he found nothing. He hasn’t come up and he could well be one horse that has been crucified by the Sydney Autumn.

13. Hilal: He’s a bludger. Did no work from gate one but when Williams asked for an effort, he went backwards and was very disappointing to my eye. Jury is well and truly out.

Rating: 1/10

14. Callsign Mav: Was three wide with cover for the trip but he came off the bit before the turn and went backwards from that point. But, he got his tongue over the bit and choked himself, so that explains the run. Forgive and forget.

Rating: 3/10

15. Uncle Bryn: Seemed to get a decent enough run in transit around midfield one off. But, when it came to crunch time, he folded. Perhaps didn’t back up from the gutbusting Naturalism.
