The ‘Nonny’ tag for Gold Trip is forever gone after the import recorded his second career win and on the biggest stage of them all, the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington.

Read on for the 2022 Melbourne Cup Post Race Horse Ratings.

2022 Melbourne Cup Replayย

2022 Melbourne Cup Race Horse Ratings

1. Gold Trip: He had a think about it when he hit the front, but Mark Zahra made sure he wasn’t going to get beat. Once he went for the horse, he properly went for him and that was the winning move. He didn’t try and ride him cute, wait to let him down. Just go for home and break their hearts, which the horse did. Superb effort from all concerned.

Rating: 9/10

2. Emissary: The only way he was going to threaten was if he got a cheap run and got out late to bomb them. Pat Moloney rode an absolute peach on him and for a few strides, he looked the winner in the straight. Just doesn’t have the class of the winner.

Rating: 8.5/10

3. High Emocean: She was the winner for a fair chunk of the race. She was absolutely trucking in the run, but the thing that beat her was a turn of foot. She doesn’t have one, but loved the way she kept finding the line in defeat. Ripping mare.

Rating: 8/10

4. Deauville Legend: Given a lovely ride by McEvoy. Presented to win the race 500m out but I just think the wet ground and the 3200m beat him in the end. Given every chance and just wasn’t quite good enough.

Rating: 7/10

5. Realm Of Flowers: The trip was no issue with her. She ran it right out. The problem being she has no turn of foot. When she needed the sprint, she was very one paced, but stayed on soundly.

Rating: 6.5/10

6. Daqiansweet Junior: Had the suck run in transit and got shuffled back by the early zip for home and tiring horses, but he picked his way through and was very good late.

Rating: 6/10

7. Smokin Romans: Got into a lovely spot from the gate and presented to be a threat when asked by J Kah but the two miles just found him out. Drop him back in trip for the Autumn, he’ll win another good race.

Rating: 6/10

8. Stockman: Just got into a tricky spot from the wide gate but you knew he was always going to be strong late and that is how it panned out. He was great in defeat in a super prep.

Rarting: 6/10

9. Knights Order: Brave. Wide throughout and T Clark tried to make a winning move on the turn, bolting for home, but rolling towards the inside sealed his fate. Brave effort though.

Rating: 5/10

10. Vow And Declare: Got into a lovely spot from the gate and ready to let down but the query pre race was the wet track and that’s how it panned out. He didn’t let down. But, dsspite not winning, it’s been a super prep.

Rating: 5/10

11. Arapaho: His run was full of merit, as it has been throughout the prep. He was snagged back to last from the wide gate and was never a winning factor, but he kept on and was game.

Rating: 5/10

12. Hoo Ya Mal: This is the horse to follow. How he’s managed to finish midfield I do not know. He pulled his head off in the run, refused to settle, yet 600m out, he was looking like the winner. The energy used prior though just told and he tired. If Gai can iron that out of him, he’s going to be a WFA star next year.

Rating: 6/10

13. Without A Fight: He was wide throughout but he just didn’t handle the ground at all. Looked like he was going to be in the race for a few strides but couldn’t let down.

Rating: 3/10

14. Grand Promenade: In a similar boat to most. Travelled into the race, but when asked to go, the wheels were spinning in the ground, but he isn’t racing well this prep.

Rating: 2/10

15. Young Werther: He looked like he was going to be a factor down the side. He was looking to go comfortably but when the sprint came on, he spat the dummy out, as he has done throughout his career. Plain.

Rarting: 2/10

16. Montefilia: In terms of the big guns, she was very poor. Had the back of Gold Trip but didn’t appear to travel at any stage and was never a factor. I think the 3200m is now dead and buried. 2000m is her go in life.

Rating: 2/10

17. Tralee Rose: They rode her with intent, which I liked, but when Knights Order went for home, she went backwards and was beaten a long way out. Needs it dry.

Rating: 2/10

18. Duais: The only excuses I can make for her is that she was wide for the trip, and the ground. But I’d be clutchng deluxe to say that cost her. I had maintained a flame for her…but it’s extinguished.

Rating: 2/10

19. Numerian: He was a beaten horse at the top of the straight but was the meat in the sandwich in a nasty looking incident. That ensured he finished down the track.

Rating: 1/10

20. Serpentine: Did a bit of work to find the front but when asked for the effort to stay in the contest, he went backwards and failed to fire, confirming the thought pre race he was making up the numbers.

Rating: 0/10

21. Camorra: The query pre race was the wet track and that’s how it panned out. He didn’t let down at all in the ground. Don’t pen him until you see him on a dry track.

Rating: 1/10

22. Interpretation: He was gone 1200m out and failed to finish. Thankfully from all reports he was okay when coming back to scale. Just forget the run.

Rating: 0/10
