Popular Queensland sprinter Rothfire has been retired from racing following his final appearance in Sunday’s Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.
The two-time Group 1 winner finished well back in the field in the Manikato, with connections subsequently calling time on his decorated racing career.
Rothfire retires having won 12 of his 47 starts and more than $5.8 million in prizemoney.
He announced himself as one of Queensland’s most exciting horses when winning the Group 1 JJ Atkins as a two-year-old.
After overcoming significant setbacks during his career, Rothfire returned to racing’s highest level last year when producing a memorable upset in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000.
Sent out at $61, the then eight-year-old wound back the clock to claim his second Group 1 victory.
The result proved one of the defining performances of a career that saw Rothfire become a popular figure with racing fans in Queensland and around Australia.
