Race 1. (17:15) Ladbrokes Maiden Plate 1000m
5 New York Star (Bet Now: $SP.00) is two weeks between runs since resuming at this track/distance when on speed and she tried hard but simply was no match late for a Saturday class horse in Scampi. Good racing style and fitter, she’s the key threat.
6 Miss Boom (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an Alex Rae trained filly that is on debut. She has had extensive jumpout work to get ready for start one, dating back to July. She has had two jumpouts this time in and each time has looked strong. Leading chance.
2 Heartattack Jack (Bet Now: $SP.00) can run top four. He resumed over 1000m at Bairnsdale where he had a decent enough run in transit and just died on his run the final 200m. Better for the run under the belt, he’s in the mix as a first four contender.
Race 2. (17:45) Hygain Tracktorque Maiden Plate 1000m
10 Mrs Iglesia (Bet Now: $SP.00) on top for me. Team Hayes trained filly that resumes, having not raced since Nov 13 at Bendigo when off speed and chased strongly in the straight when second to Hello Romeo. Given a good break and she has looked like a rocker in trial/jumpout work so keen to see how she resumes.
9 Immerse (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back to 1100m for James Cummings after racing over 1100m at Bendigo. She got off speed and was there to win but just couldn’t quite get there when a narrow second to Excenia. Tricky draw but she’s knocking on the door.
1 Bedourie (Bet Now: $SP.00) should be better for the debut run, which came at Pakenham when near the speed and tried hard but just couldn’t quite see it through but the winner, Scenic Point, looks a moral in the Redoute’s Choice on Saturday, so that form should read quite well.
Race 3. (18:15) Good Friday Maiden Plate 1600m
5 Sumo Sandy (Bet Now: $SP.00) should be taking care of these. Busuttin/Young trained galloper that debuted over 1400m at Sandown and kept chasing from off the speed when second to The Muffin Man, who ran well last week at Flemington, so that reads well for this. Home track advantage, fitter and up in trip, he takes beating.
8 On Broadway (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes back in track for Kennewell/Yeomans after racing over 1950m at Yarra Valley where she found a bog track and just couldn’t pick her feet up late in the piece. Firmer deck, should lead and take running down.
9 Stella Cantante (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a slight query at 1600m but does get in well after the claim and this isn’t an overly deep contest. She ran over 1400m here two weeks back where she had a suck run in behind and tried hard but just couldn’t quite finish her race off. Not sure she wins, but is one for exotics.
Race 4. (18:45) Designer Coolrooms Handicap (Class 1) 1400m
6 Howdy (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a good horse I feel when right. He ran over 1200m here last time when off speed and chased with purpose but found one better in Unconquerable. He’s racing as if 1400m will be fine and despite the tricky gate, he’s hard to beat.
2 Makdane (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver for Mick Kent. Market wanted him with confidence when resuming over 1200m at Pakenham but he didn’t exactly fire and was a bit on the plain side late in the piece. He was a while between runs so with room for improvement, he’s in the mix.
7 Women In Uniform (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one at a big price here IMO. She ran over this track/distance first up two weeks back. She got a fair way off the speed but didn’t mind the way she finished her race off in defeat behind British Poet. I think she’s a knockout hope.
Race 5. (19:15) Browns Sawdust & Shavings Maiden Plate 1300m
1 Grouse Mountain (Bet Now: $SP.00) is finding it hard to greet the judge but she looks an each way lock. She ran over 1000m at Ballarat last time out when leading and giving a good sight but had no answers late for Zouper Fund. 1300m is the query, but she should lead and take running down.
3 Dancing Dolly (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an Archie Alexander trained filly that resumes. She hasn’t raced since Nov 13 at Bendigo when runner up behind subsequent city winner Bancory Bay in a good effort. Looks to have trialled/jumped out well and has a touch of quality.
13 Lyrically (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a daughter of Turn Me Loose that resumes. She hasn’t raced since her debut back in July at Geelong where she was raw and new to the caper, finishing down the track. Trial/jumpout work has been pretty good and despite the tricky gate, she’s in with a shout at a price as an exotic player.
Race 6. (19:45) Reed Cranes & Haulage Handicap (64) 1300m
6 Gin Baba (Bet Now: $SP.00) took a little while to break the maiden tag but now that she has, she can go on with it. She didn’t beat much in the Ararat maiden last time but the arrogance of the win was something else and a much needed confidence boost because she had been close up without winning. She can win again off last run.
1 Bay Of Zea (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door for Liam Howley. Let and tired late fresh at Sale behind Pop Award before going to The Valley when ridden with a sit and ran an improved race behind Bold Response. Hard fit and back tot his level, she appeals.
5 Prancing Queen (Bet Now: $SP.00) steps up to 1300m after racing over 1100m at Kyneton last time. She landed near the speed and tried hard but just couldn’t quite finish the job when fifth. She can sit forward…I doubt she wins, but can run first four at a price.
Race 7. (20:15) No Fuss Event Hire Handicap (64) 2025m
9 Vistetto (Bet Now: $SP.00) will love the rise in trip after a maiden win over 1950m at Yarra Valley where he wasn’t 100% happy on the wet track but he got better as the race went on to win and win well. He is a horse on the up, less convictions than most, he appeals.
7 Compressing (Bet Now: $SP.00) could put his hand up for the SA Derby with a win here. Market didn’t really want him when debuting over the mile at Terang but he gave them a start and a beating in an electric performance. Home track advantage, eats up 2000m, rates highly.
2 Hollandia (Bet Now: $SP.00) also steps up in trip after racing over the mile here two weeks back. He ran last in the field of seven but wasn’t beaten far and was far from disgraced in defeat. The rise in trip I do like and his best is clearly good enough to threaten.
Race 8. (20:45) Freeway Ford Handicap (70) 1000m
1 Big Me (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one of the key threats off the back of a win over 1000m on Echuca Cup Day where he looked a good thing on paper and duly saluted. Interesting set up here but he looks a horse with talent so he looks hard to beat.
6 Honor Galore (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a Cliff Brown trained mare that has returned in pretty good order and is a key threat off a first up win at this track/distance. She gave them a start and a beating, sitting off speed and knuckled down with purpose late. Leading contender.
2 Ranting (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an interesting runner. He resumes for Reece Goodwin, having not raced since Jan 11 down the straight at Flemington when down the track behind Shesallshenanigans. Given a break and his jumpout work has been strong.
