Belmont is where Perth metro racing takes place this Saturday for an eight event program, where it is Farnley Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out eight metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (14:38) Tabtouch Maiden 1400m
These maidens are always tricky but I think 12 Hicount (Bet Now: $4.60) can get away with this one fresh. Lindsey Smith trained mare that is first up after a pretty good campaign when last in work. The big ticks for her here are that the latest trial was good, she finds a thin race and the big tick is that the bar plates come off.
2 Comparative (Bet Now: $5.00) is bursting to win a maiden and gee he gets his chance here. Ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and looked all over a winner but was outbobbed on the peg by Saverio, who was racing quite well, so that form should read nicely for this. Just has to overcome the sticky draw.
7 Black Dice (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Blackfriars gelding on debut for the Neville Parker yard. He has had the one trial this prep for the debut, with another trial back in May. He hasn’t had the flashing light trial to suggest he’s a star or anything, but he’s trialled well enough to suggest he can run a bold race here.
Race 2. (15:14) Seacorp Handicap (1MW) 1400m
6 Iron Boss (Bet Now: $6.50) for me. Adam Durrant trained galloper who was beautifully placed by the stable to win last time out at Kalgoorlie in what looked a thin race and he was dominant in winning. Now he has his confidence high, he can figure prominently here in a weak metro event.
8 Forty Four Red (Bet Now: $5.50) resumed over the Pinjarra 1400m a couple of Thursdays back where he scooted along in front and gave a bold sight on speed but just felt the pinch late when tiring to run second to Kingdom And Empire. Gets a weight pull on that horse and maps well here. Definite threat.
1 Russian River (Bet Now: $8.00) is the watch horse here. Bruce Watkins trained gelding who only had the one run in the Autumn, which saw him score a dominant win at Northam over 1400m. Tipped out soon after and he looked to trial well recently behind the well performed Material Man. Big watch here.
Race 3. (15:54) Budget Car & Truck Rental Plate 1200m
4 Money Maher (Bet Now: $2.30) looks the best bet on the card. He resumed last Thursday at Northam and looked in an awful spot under Pike throughout, but Pike waited, got the cutaway and he drew away like it was a barrier trial. He looks a WA Guineas contender for sure and should be taking this one.
6 Royal Strata (Bet Now: $8.00) was 138 days between runs when racing over 1300m here last Wednesday where he attempted to lead all the way at a slow tempo and rightfully gave a good kick but just ran out of condition late behind Athlete. Looks to lead again and with the fitness under the belt, he should be stronger.
7 Countess Natasha (Bet Now: $14.00) is still a maiden for the Luciani team but a win is near. Just not sure it is here, but she should run well. Game effort last Wednesday in that Athlete race mentioned above where she sat outside the speed and fought hard. I think she’ll be better with some cover here. Place bet only I’d suggest.
Race 4. (16:34) Crown Perth Opening Day Handicap (66+) 1200m
3 Diablerie (Bet Now: $2.60)is bursting to win a race and I think the son of New Approach gets his chance here. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back where he sat off the pace and closed on the leaders hard late when second to Lockroy. That form reads very well for this and he should take some beating.
8 Faerie Whisper (Bet Now: $4.80) will love the rise to 1200m I suspect. She has been racing over the 1000m here in recent times and running on powerfully but giving away too big of a start. There does look to be good speed engaged here, so she should get her chance to run on and ambush these.
1 Stable Secret (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Brad Graham trained veteran who comes through the Lockroy race mentioned above. He was very keen on speed that day and when he was asked for the big effort, he was found wanting late and weakened. I think with better manners, and perhaps some cover, he can bounce back.
Race 5. (17:14) Farnley Stakes 1400m
Buttering up on 4 Just Act Natural (Bet Now: $2.60). He was three weeks between runs when contesting the Idyllic Prince a fortnight back and I thought his effort was very good when chasing down It’s It to around a head. Looks the leader here and with a soft sectional midrace, if that happens, he’s the one.
1 It’s It (Bet Now: $6.00) is an absolute beauty for the Sharon Miller yard. He toughed it out very strongly on speed to win the Idyllic Prince two weeks ago, holding out Just Act Natural. The query is whether or not he leads because I doubt Just Act Natural will take hold. He will have to work but he has done that before with success.
2 Ihtsahymn (Bet Now: $41.00) is the interesting runner here. Fred Kersley trained stayer who has had a four week freshen up since racing over 2100m here when making ground late behind The Forgotten One. 1400m is clearly short of his best, but if they do go silly in front, he might be the one.
Race 6. (17:52) Morley Growers Market Handicap (72+) 1000m
5 Lockroy (Bet Now: $4.40) does look the safe option here. He was given a sweet ride to win over 1200m here a fortnight back, fending them all off for a narrow but strong win. 1200m sees him out I think so back to 1000m from a good draw looks a perfect scenario for him to continue on his winning ways.
4 Bombs Away (Bet Now: $3.90) had really good market support when resuming at this track/distance two weeks back and he looked home for a few strides but the bonny mare Dainty Tess sprouted wings late to win. He has a really good second up record and is another that will be suited by the hot tempo.
8 Atacama Sky (Bet Now: $9.00) is the watch horse. She hasn’t set the world on fire this time in but I think she has had excuses. She hates wet tracks, plus last time was 1200m and that isn’t her go. 1000m on firm ground is and I think that is what she will get here from the inside gate. Knockout chance.
Race 7. (18:30) Salinger Handicap (72+) 1600m
6 By Decree (Bet Now: $4.20) for me. In form mare who was known as a wet tracker but she put that to bed a fortnight back here with a narrow second to Ragnar’s Saga at the track/distance. Gets a 2kg weight swing and barrier advantage, so I am confident he can turn the tables and that looks the right form for this.
9 Ragnar’s Saga (Bet Now: $3.20) was having his first crack at the mile in that race mentioned above and it looked for a little while as if he wouldn’t run it out given he was quite keen in the box seat but once Pike got him clear air, he finished best narrowly. Should relax a bit better with the wide gate ensuring he won’t get pocketed and he’ll be better for the run at the trip.
2 Universal Law (Bet Now: $6.50) is the watch horse here. Adam Durrant trained gelding who has the potential to be a blacktype performer but he has shown next to nothing this time in. Three weeks between runs since failing behind Properantes, but I didn’t mind the way he trialled at Lark Hill subsequent and blinkers on first time.
Race 8. (19:05) Heineken 3 Handicap (1MW) 1000m
7 I Am Incredible (Bet Now: $7.00) is a consistent type for the Parnham yard who is bursting to win a race but just always seems to find one or two better. Tried hard at the track/distance a fortnight back but had to settle for a narrow third to Blitzem Sunday. Maps superbly here to stalk a hot speed and have first crack.
9 Nashville Cat (Bet Now: $8.50) probably isn’t suited back to 1000m but his last start effort couldn’t be ignored. Ran over 1300m here a fortnight back and he looked a good thing beaten in the end. Had no luck at all in the straight when appearing to be bolting and really should have won. He too will get back and flash with blinkers on first time.
6 Blitzem Someday (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Gavin Foster gelding who is at good odds despite an impressive last start win at this track/distance in the race mentioned above. He sat back off a hot speed before Whiting eased him wider and he finished off with real purpose to nab them near the peg. Similar assignment and $14+ is on offer.
