The Caulfield Carnival swings into gear this Saturday with a bumper ten race program, headlined by the Caulfield Guineas (1600m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:15) Debutant Stakes 1000m
4 Immortality (Bet Now:Β $9.50 TOP ODDS) looks a good mover the Price/Kent camp. They’ve dominated the early 2YO races in Melbourne to date and have this colt debuting on the home track. Loved the way he moved in a recent jumpout here when wide out on speed but under a hold and seemingly had something up the sleeve. He’ll do me.
3 Dubai Oak (Bet Now:Β $17.00 TOP ODDS) is a Pride Of Dubai trained colt for Team Hayes that has had a couple of jumpouts to get ready for start one. Latest came on the Synthetic at Flemington when on speed throughout and looked to be trucking nicely in a good piece of work. Draws soft and looks a professional.
7 Renosu (Bet Now:Β $14.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Exceed And Excel for James Cummings. This colt looks to have jumped out well at Flemington to get ready for start one, and how often do we see these early Godolphin juveniles fire, so watch the market with this guy and see if it likes him.
Race 2. (12:50) Weekend Hussler 1400m
2 Buffalo River (Bet Now:Β $2.70 TOP ODDS) is a bit loose upstairs, but I think the big tick for him is getting Olly steering. In six career wins, Olly has ridden him to four wins and a placing from six rides, so he gets on with the horse better than most. I am hoping the hands of the gun hoop can get him to relax in front and prove hard to run down.
5 Riddle Me That (Bet Now:Β $8.50 TOP ODDS) looks to have returned well for Matt Laurie. Had jumped out well prior to resuming down the straight in the Bobbie Lewis where he was a bit outclassed but far from disgraced in defeat I thought behind Splintex. Fitter, up in trip and back onto a bending track, he can bounce back.
9 Galaxy Raider (Bet Now:Β $16.00 TOP ODDS) can be an improver here second up. He resumed in the Testa Rossa two weeks back at Sandown and given the race shape, he had no chance, but was far from disgraced in defeat behind Chaillot. Fitter and up in trip, an improved showing is on the cards.
Race 3. (13:25) Village Stakes 1200m
3 Pandemic (Bet Now:Β $8.00 TOP ODDS) should prove really hard to beat here for James Cummings. Resumed three weeks ago over 1100m here when back off a moderate speed and was set an ask, but loved the way he closed off late when second to He’s A Balter. Fitter, up in trip, hopefully a more genuine tempo, and he can finish over the top.
Good test here for 7 Lombardo (Bet Now:Β $1.75 TOP ODDS) , but I think he’s turned the corner. Once upon a time, he was a jump/run type that would be weak at the end. Not sure what has happened the past two, but he has been a different horse. Sustained speed saw him bolt up two back at Morphettville. Then took a sit at the Valley and was just as impressive. Harder here, but I think he’s up to it.
9 Ocean Beyond (Bet Now:Β $8.50 TOP ODDS) is eligible for much easier but I think Daniel Bowman has him going well. Jumped out well prior to resuming here where he wasn’t suited by the race shape but was far from disgraced in defeat behind He’s A Balter. You’d like to think he will improve off that and is a knockout chance.
Race 4. (14:00) Thoroughbred Club Stakes 1200m
8 New York Baby (Bet Now:Β $7.50 TOP ODDS) is yet to put a foot wrong in her two start career and I think can go close here. Wasn’t the strongest field she beat up fresh down the straight at Flemington but the way she was trucking in the run was impressive and she put them away with as much ease. 1200m should be fine and is one of the key contenders.
1 Seradess (Bet Now:Β $8.00 TOP ODDS) is a pretty sharp filly for Team Kavanagh. Looked drunk down the straight fresh at Flemington. Got back to a bending track on Moir Night at the Valley in the Scarborough and under a sweet steer from Currie, was able to get the job done. Improvement to come, she’s hard to beat.
13 Dueastar (Bet Now:Β $34.00 TOP ODDS) is a working progress for Matty Williams and could sneak a first four spot. Ran down the straight at Flemington and closed off okay albeit never a winning threat to dominant winner New York Baby. She’s racing as if she will eat up 1200m and is one for exotics.
Race 5. (14:35) Schillaci Stakes 1100m
4 September Run (Bet Now:Β $3.00) looks to be going really well and getting away from MV will be ideal. Just wish this was at Flemington. Really caught the eye fresh in the McEwen. Then went to the Moir and was good late after getting quite wide on the turn behind Wild Ruler. Back to this level, she appeals big time.
5 Bella Nipotina (Bet Now:Β $4.50) is a different horse since joining the Maher/Eustace team. She was a tease and somewhat of a non winner when with the Hayes/Dabernig camp but with the new stable, she has won two of four and been placed in the other two runs. She’s a beauty and will take beating against this lot off her dominant How Now win three weeks back here.
2 Roheryn (Bet Now:Β $18.00) deserves another look. Resumed several weeks ago in the Theo Marks at Kembla where to the eye, he was pretty plain behind Chat, but didn’t pull up 100% post race, so there were excuses for him. Tick over trial was good and should land in a good spot from the gate.
Race 6. (15:10) Might And Power 2000m
I don’t want to dive into short odds for 2 Zaaki (Bet Now:Β $1.22), but I can’t tip against him. Visually and on the clock, nothing spectacular about his Underwood win at Sandown. Job done, move onto this, win again without jumping up and down, and this race should top him off beautifully for the Cox Plate.
This run will be an intriguing one for 5 Probabeel (Bet Now:Β $6.50). If she runs well, I dare say they will press on towards the Cox Plate, but below par run, freshen up and win the Empire Rose. She tried hard behind Zaaki in the Underwood, but was safely held. Runs well again, but will be safely held by the boom horse.
3 Nonconformist (Bet Now:Β $21.00) is using this to clean the cobwebs out for the Caulfield Cup next week. He earned his way into that race off the back off the Naturalism win, where he was given a 12/10 by Childs and was too good, just. He won’t be winning, but will be hitting the line I dare say that’ll catch the eye for next week.
Race 7. (15:50) Northwood Plume Stakes 1200m
4 Tailleur (Bet Now:Β $4.00) is a quality mare for James Cummings that has been kept on the fresh side. Hasn’t raced since the Sheraco when back near last in the run and worked home strongly without threatening behind Entriviere. Loved her tick over trial at Hawkesbury and like her on the fresh side. Hard to beat.
1 Brooklyn Hustle (Bet Now:Β $5.00) is the class runner of the field and I think the big tick for her is the field has been hit by scratchings, so she won’t be far away from the leaders 400m out, you would assume, and we know she has the brilliance to round them up. Forget the Moir run where she veered off the turn. Backed hard, which was surprising, in the Moir, but have to respect the push.
2 Nudge (Bet Now:Β $12.00) is a quality mare for Chris Waller that resumes. This girl came of age during the Brisbane Winter, highlighted by a couple of Stakes wins before a game second to Tofane in the Tatts Tiara. Just one soft trial to get ready, but she showed in the Winter she can measure up to this level.
Race 8. (16:30) Caulfield Guineas 1600m
The Golden Rose looks the A1 form reference. To my eye, the run that screamed out Caulfield Guineas was 2 Artorius (Bet Now:Β $4.00). Like he did in the Golden Slipper, he had no idea how to get around Rosehill but once he balanced up, he savaged the line and was outstanding. If he can use the gate to advantage, then clear air, gee he’ll be hard to hold out.
1 Anamoe (Bet Now:Β $2.70) could easily blow this field away and stamp himself a Cox Plate contender. I just feel he is on the short side of betting. IMO, he was given every possible in the Golden Rose and really, another stride and he wins, so it wasn’t a poor run, unless of course you took the shorts. He’s been set for this race and will look the winner at some stage.
3 Tiger Of Malay (Bet Now:Β $10.00) is an honest customer for Team Freedman that won’t be far away. He was kept pretty safe in betting when racing in the Golden Rose and he didn’t disgrace himself at all in defeat behind impressive winner In The Congo. I doubt he wins, but a definite first four threat.
Race 9. (17:10) Toorak Hcp 1600m
11 I’m Thunderstruck (Bet Now:Β $3.00) does look quite clearly the horse to beat. He’s a loose cannon upstairs still and if this was at Flemington, no betting, he just wins hence why I think a race like the Cantala would be perfect. But, he’s a four year old and they have their mind on the Golden Eagle. He should have won the Rupert Clarke but pilot error cost him. Normal luck and I think he wins.
4 Elephant (Bet Now:Β $4.50) is a beauty from NZ that has only suffered one defeat in his career, which came two back when beaten a lip by Superstorm in the Feehan. Then went to the Sandown Stakes a fortnight back and gave them a galloping lesson in a dominant display. Creeping up in the weights, but hard to knock how genuine he is.
12 So You Assume (Bet Now:Β $23.00) is an absolute beauty and yes, this is a fair rise in grade/depth for her, but she’s flying for Shane Nicholls, has the right racing pattern and the old adage of a mare in form. This is a mare in form. Led throughout and was too good in the Stocks on Moir Night. She’ll likely lead this field up and run a beauty I suspect.
Race 10. (17:45) Herbert Power Stakes 2400m
5 Delphi (Bet Now:Β $2.00) looks to be ticking along beautifully. Was keen on him in the Naturalism and it took a 12/10 from Childs aboard Nonconformist to beat him. Delphi surged hard late but just missed. I think he’s ticking along very nicely for a Melbourne Cup and should take beating here.
4 Defibrillate (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is a hard horse to catch given his racing pattern but I think he’s racing well. Be forgiving of his JRA Cup effort. Just think the race shape wasn’t to his liking and it was suited by those on speed or nearer the inside. He battled on pretty well. A win here and he will climb up the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup. Hard to beat I’d suggest.
2 King Of Leogrance (Bet Now:Β $15.00) is right in this. First run for Hickmott came at Flemington where it was more or less a prep run but I thought his finale was very good behind Floating Artist, a progressive animal. Gets a rise in trip, got upside and has class on his side, so he has to be respected.
