A nine race card has been assembled for Belmont on Saturday where it is Ngawyni Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:42) FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK MDN 1000m
Leaning the way of 2 Uncanny Timing (Bet Now: $3.40) but not a great deal of confidence in a tricky maiden. Impressive trial winner prior to resuming over 1000m at Northam last Thursday where Troy Turner got him into a nice spot just off the speed and was presented to win at the right time, but was nabbed late by Amasensus, who was backed at odds. Finds a winnable maiden.
1 Foxhood (Bet Now: $12.00) is a son of Helmet for Jim Taylor that resumed over this track/distance at the midweeks a couple of Wednesdays back where he was a bit green and raw when asked for the effort. But he did respond and looked the winner but found one better in So Sway. Solid enough resumption and the claim for Ramoly helps.
7 Giano (Bet Now: $101.00) isn’t one I could back to win, but for wider multiples, I could include. He’s clearly had his issues because he’s eight years of age and this is just start number six. He resumed in the So Sway race mentioned above and I thought he worked to the line okay late albeit was never a winning threat. He wants further but for a horse likely to be $101+, there was enough in the run to suggest a top four finish isn’t the worst play.
Race 2. (14:22) TABTOUCH WESTSPEED (RS0MW) 1200m
In the corner of 2 Bedouin Belle (Bet Now: $12.00) but not a great deal of confidence. Lou Luciani trained mare. Started favourite when racing over 1000m here two weeks ago, her second up run from a break, and I thought she was just fair in the straight after seemingly getting every chance behind Pearls And Prawns. Third up now, hard fit, up in trip, one last chance.
1 Don’s Legacy (Bet Now: $8.00) is a son of Patronize for David Harrison that had trialled up well prior to resuming over 1000m here two weeks ago. Got into a good spot just near the speed and for a long time looked a winning threat but his condition just gave out late. Is a second up winner and up to 1200m is a big tick for this guy.
10 I’m Icey (Bet Now: $23.00) is suited back to 1200m for Neville Parnham. Ran over 1300m here a few weeks ago when specked at a price. Had a suck run just behind the speed and worked home okay without really threatening behind Zephyr Queen. Form around him does read well for a race like this and the overall depth isn’t overly strong.
Race 3. (15:02) HAPPY 30TH BEAU PLATE 1400m
Really keen on the Dan Morton trained filly 4 Queen Brown (Bet Now: $2.20). This girl was good in a leader dominated race first up before she was ridden a bit more positively two weeks ago and once the splits came for her, away she went and she gave them a proper spanking. Can only see an extra 200m suiting her and barring bad luck, think she wins again.
3 Billy Ain’t Silly (Bet Now: $2.80) looks one of the hardest to beat. Colin Webster trained juvenile that was good on debut over 1000m here when third to All Day Session before stepping up to 1200m at the midweeks where he led throughout, controlled things to suit himself, and he was just far too good. Ran okay time for the day and he’s got more to offer.
I’ve got time for 5 Surveillance (Bet Now: $11.00), a Jim Taylor trained three year old. Was very disappointing first up but bounced back second up when racing three weeks got, chasing strongly but clearly no match for a good one in Snickerdoodledandy. Now he’s had the 1400m run under the belt, he should be better off.
Race 4. (15:42) NGAWYNI STAKES (BM78+) 1400m
6 Massimo (Bet Now: $1.75) on top. He’s been a patience tester this prep, but in recent times, he has been racing much better, especially his effort two weeks ago at this track/distance when leading and giving a great sight, but was run down by a smart one in Inspirational Girl. Think he gets the perfect trail behind Wrinkly and will be hard to beat.
2 Wrinkly (Bet Now: $4.20) will lead this field up and give a bold sight. That’s what he did here a few weeks back over the mile here and was able to cling on and fend off Jeraft and co in a blanket finish. Been in work a fair while but continues to race in such good form. Should be near the front, leading I assume, and giving you a great sight.
Back to 1400m from the mile a week ago is a query with 9 Jeraft (Bet Now: $6.00), but he did win last Saturday and what I liked is that he showed good ticker late because he was there to be run down but found plenty late and was too good. Five time winner at 1400m, so saves his best for this trip and isn’t badly weighted against these.
Race 5. (16:18) HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBYN (BM70+) 1600m
Good test here for 3 Fuhrer (Bet Now: $2.35) taking on the older horses as a four year old, but he comes into this off the back of a very impressive win over 1700m here a couple of Wednesdays back when running along in front and he was simply too good for them. Mitch Pateman jumps back on and noteworthy he rides this guy and not Gunnago, a horse he won on last time.
4 Gunnago (Bet Now: $14.00) had been teasing to win one, and it finally came last time out at Northam over the mile when sitting back in the run before peeling wide on the turn and launching late to get the job done. Now he has a win on the board, his confidence is up and can certainly go on with it in what is a winnable race.
6 Black Shadow (Bet Now: $6.50) is third up from a break and should be ready to go fitness wise. Ran over 1400m here two weeks ago when wide no cover for the trip and tired late behind the very promising mare Inspirational Girl. Now up to a more ideal trip and overall, the depth here isn’t strong, so he can run an improved race at odds.
Race 6. (17:00) BERNARD COUCH MEMORIAL (BM66+) 1200m
3 Nerodio (Bet Now: $3.60) is a son of Playing God for Steph Bakranich. Can be a bit hit and miss but has showed enough to suggest he can take this out. Thought he was a bit flat behind Captain Kink two back but ran a couple of weeks back here and beat all bar Long Beach, with Pike producing a 12/10 to get it home. Dry tracks are key to him, so hopefully the weather gods are shining bright.
Huge query here is 9 Leading Girl (Bet Now: $2.70), a talented mare for Team Williams that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since June 1 of 2019 when producing a lovely turn of foot from off the speed under Pike to score. Over 14 months off, so has clearly had her issues, but the trial was good to the eye and the Bar Plates at the front are off. Definite market watch.
1 Regal Counsel (Bet Now: $6.50) is a son of My Admiration for Peter Fernie that resumes and I dare say is getting ready for a race like the Hannans during the Kalgoorlie Carnival. Ran three times during the Autumn, with the highlight being a brilliant first up. Resumes without a public trial but is a good fresh horse, so watch the market.
Race 7. (17:35) SEPPELT WINES (BM72+) 1000m
Going to take a chance with 4 Highland Beat (Bet Now: $21.00), a former Hayes/Dabernig runner that makes his WA debut for the Gangemi team. Mixed his form somewhat when racing in Victoria/NSW, but his recent trial here behind Free Trade was pretty good, keeping mind he didn’t wear blinkers, and when the Blinkers on a couple of preps ago, it resulted in two wins on the bounce, so I’ll take a punt with him.
5 Money Matters (Bet Now: $2.60) is a son of Canford Cliffs that resumes for Adam Durrant. This guy had a very busy 3YO season, but it was a fruitful season. He won a couple of blacktype events, along with the 3YO Magic Millions at Pinjarra. He’s a bulldog this guy and though 1000m is short of his best, his recent trial win was very good.
6 We’ve Got Dreams (Bet Now: $3.70) will likely lead this field up and look the winner for a long way. Ran over this track/distance a few weeks back when leading and she gave a great kick, but the 59kg impost just got to her late and was nabbed near the peg by Boomtastic. Should be near the front and give you a great run for your money.
Race 8. (18:10) AMELIA PARK (RS1MW) 1400m
Going each way with 13 Classic Rogue (Bet Now: $23.00), who should love the rise to 1400m after starting the prep with a couple of 1200m runs here, the latest coming last Wednesday when snagged back from the wide gate and finding the line well behind the in form Elite Street. If gate one is used to advantage, think he’ll run a race at odds.
Back on a firmer deck, think 6 Dark Mission (Bet Now: $2.50) deserves another chance. She ran here last Saturday on what was a shifty track and she didn’t seem to appreciate it or let down at all in a disappointing effort behind Lucky Linda Lulu. Best efforts have come on firmer footing, so with that here, think she can bounce back.
9 Choice Command (Bet Now: $14.00) should lead this field up and I think he’ll give a bold sight, which is what he did last time out at over 1200m at Pinjarra but the big weight just got to him late when second to Puli. Can see him finding the front and running a beauty provided he doesn’t cop too much heat because the last bit will test.
Race 9. (18:50) CROWN TOWERS (RS1MW) 2100m
Going with 4 Sowar (Bet Now: $5.50), who has done little wrong in four runs back from a spell for Steve Wolfe. Ran over this track/distance last Wednesday where he was back near last in the run and presented to win, closing off strongly late when second to Queen Takes King. Can sit much closer in the run and if that eventuates here, he’ll take some beating.
3 Queen Takes King (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Lindsey Smith trained mare who chipped away and was sound in defeat two back in the Belmont Classic before coming back to 2100m here last Wednesday where Noske put her into a lovely spot just off the speed and despite a notable betting drift, she was too strong for them. Hard to beat against this lot.
Not sure I could back 5 Moderator (Bet Now: $23.00) to win but concede the form around him doesn’t read too bad. Two weeks between runs since racing over 2200m here where he was off the speed and tried hard, but clearly no match for a promising one in Truly Great. No horse of that class here and does no work from the inside gate.
