SA metro racing this Saturday heads to Gawler where nine races have been set down. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (10) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (12:02) Commercial Hospitality (Bm64) 1100m
9 Mintulee (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) looks a sharp filly for Ryan Balfour and confident she can make a winning debut. Daughter of Russian Revolution that looked strong in a couple of trials during the Autumn without a run. Spelled and has returned with a trial and jumpout under the belt, each time seeing her sit on speed and move very well, the trial seeing her run second to class filly Dubenenko. Confident she can win at start one.
1 Shadowfax (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a key threat. He was unwanted in betting when debuting a fortnight back at Morphettville where he was off the speed throughout and tried his guts out but just couldn’t quite finish the job when a narrow second to Free Beer. Should be better for the run under the belt and is another with genuine wet track experience.
7 Social Dancer (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) commands some level of respect. Aaron Bain trained filly that debuted over this track/distance at the midweeks when near the speed throughout and she tried hard. Just found wanting a bit late in the piece when second to Sweet Rock Candy. Better for the debut under the belt, seemingly a good racing style and will give cheek.
Race 2. (12:37) Lj Hooker Property (Bm84) 1200m
1 Picargo (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) just seems a straight bat option here. Ryan Balfour has him absolutely flying this time in. He got a beaut run in transit two weeks ago at Morphettville behind the speed before saving ground nearer the inside and that proved to be the difference, finishing best to win impressively again. He has an unbelievable track/distance record and maps perfect once again.
4 Metro Legend (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) has to be given another chance. His recent runs have come at Morphettville, winning two back on the Parks track before going to the course proper two weeks ago when attempting to lead throughout and giving a decent sight but tired late, beaten just under five lengths by Picargo. He is generally around the mark and can bounce back, provided he gets a soft time of it on speed.
3 Keep Reading (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is suited up to 1200m for Team Jolly. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1000m at Murray Bridge when chasing the speed from the outset and just couldn’t quite sustain the gallop, feeling the pinch late behind in form sprinter, The Gov. Like him back up in trip and the tempo won’t be as crazy this time around.
Race 3. (13:12) Contract Engineering (Bm76) 1700m
7 Silent Don (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) looks hard to beat for the Clarken/O’Shea camp. His last couple of runs have come at 1800m, winning two back at Murray Bridge before going to Morphettville a fortnight back. He was off the speed but seemingly going easily and moved into the race with purpose, looking the winner, but just couldn’t quite get there when second to Exalted Ruth. Hard fit, back to 1700m, handles wet ground, hard to beat.
2 Montepulciano (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is flying for Team Jolly and is one of the key chances. He is five weeks between runs since a strong win over 1950m on the Parks track at Morphettville. He got a beaut run in transit behind the speed before angling clear at the right time and he let down with purpose late to win impressively. Break between runs is no issue given residual fitness, he’s in form, handles wet ground and will be strong at the end.
Travis Doudle had a strong hand off noms but goes with the sole rep with 1 Cashin Chex (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). He is three weeks between runs since racing over the mile at Murray Bridge where he got a fair way back in the run and did make up headway but was never really a threat behind Pudding. He does have a good record at Gawler and juice in the track is ideal for him. Hard to beat.
Race 4. (13:47) Gawler Arms Hotel (Bm64) 1500m
1 Chipson (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is starting to put it together with experience. He has won his past two, breaking the maiden status in style at Murray Bridge before letting down with purpose to win a fortnight back at Morphettville, nailing Delightful Shecky on the peg. You’d think he only has to hold his form to take beating once again and the wet track will be no issue.
Fitter and up to 1500m are two big ticks for 2 Bunjil (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). Team McEvoy trained three year old that resumed over 1350m at Donald where he got back in the run and in a race dominated on speed, I thought he didn’t do a bad job in defeat behind Ellen’s Licence. This looks a much weaker race compared to first up and with good upside to come, he appeals.
6 Zac’s Back (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a knockout hope for Shayne Cahill. This guy was unwanted in betting when racing at Morphettville two weeks back where he got back off the speed and seemed to struggle on the wet ground early but he picked up, ran through the pain barrier and found the line well enough behind Chipson to finish third. Not sure he wins, but a first four threat.
Race 5. (14:27) Tab Hcp (64) 2100m
9 Malinong Club (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) looks just about ready to rock and roll. This mare ran last Saturday at Murray Bridge and while she was safely held, beaten three lengths, you could make a case to say she finishes much closer, getting badly held up when seemingly having plenty to offer. On the back up, up to 2100m, depth not deep…I think she only runs well.
4 Sea Of Secrets (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) has placed at the track/distance previously and looks ready to run well at it again. He put together a couple of sharp wins over the mile at Strathalbyn before going to 1800m at Morphettville two weeks ago where he just seemed to struggle nearer the inside, which was quicksand, finishing down the track behind Exalted Ruth. Like him up in trip and forgive him for one below par run.
2 Footlights (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) has won at this trip and I think he is looking for it. He was well specked at odds when racing over 1800m two weeks back at Morphettville where he got back to near last in the run and while he was never a threat, I didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind Exalted Ruth. Hard fit now and getting to a suitable trip, he can run a much improved race and a win wouldn’t shock at all.
Race 6. (15:07) Adelaide Plains B'stock (Bm70) 1200m
Hard to get away from 1 Jacks On Ice (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). Three weeks between runs since an all the way win at Murray Bridge. It was a positive ride from Ben Price, sending the gelding straight to the front and gave nothing else a look in, leading throughout and fought them off with purpose to score. Creeping up in the relative weights but good racing style, genuine, in form…he appeals.
2 Danish Fortune (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) looks like he has come back in outstanding order for Darren McLeod. Resumed over 1050m at Morphettville a fortnight back where he produced one of the runs/wins of the meeting, charging from the back and wide to finish over the top, clocking some of the better late splits of the meeting. Fitter, up in trip, off that return…has to be respected.
8 Classy Kenny (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is on the seven day back up for the Hickmott/Riggs camp after racing last Saturday at Murray Bridge where he was on speed, somewhat against his usual pattern, and he just felt the pinch late in the piece when a close up fifth to Celsius Star. He was a few weeks between runs so with room for improvement and a more positive steer, he can take this out.
Race 7. (15:45) Holdfast Ins. Brokers (Bm64) 1500m
Fitter and up to 1500m, it looks a great set up for 1 Exalted Fire (Bet Now:ย $SP.00). He was met with strong market support when resuming over 1400m at Murray Bridge three weeks ago and the intent was clear from Rawiller in leading. He led at a decent clip and gave a great sight but couldn’t quite see it through and was run down late by Annihilate. He’ll get a sweet run near the speed and with the run under the belt, he appeals.
5 Peacemaker (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) should be around the mark. Chris Bieg trained gelding that ran in the France’s Boy from two weeks back at Morphettville. He tried hard from near the speed but just couldn’t quite finish the race off, running fourth to Laelaps. He handles the wet okay but IMO is better on top of the ground, so that is the query, but he’s honest and strikes a winnable race.
4 Belmont Avenue (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is an interesting runner. Aaron Bain trains this son of Zoffany, who resumes, having not raced since Feb 11 over the mile at Morphettville when down the track behind a promising horse, En Francais. Has looked strong in a couple of trials and first up at 1500m tells me there is some level of intent, so watch the market.
Race 8. (16:22) 23-24 Season M'ships Now (62) 1200m
12 Pretentious Lass (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) on top. This mare loves wet ground and and the Gawler 1200m, as evidenced last start when a four length spank job winner at the track/distance, beating a key rival in Rose Ring. The pattern will be important because Gawler at these Saturday metro meetings, more often than not it’s an up/in pattern, which works against her, but if it’s playing middle/wide, she is clearly the one to beat.
The up/in pattern is a big tick for 9 Rose Ring (Bet Now:ย $SP.00), who does look the leader. She ran second to Pretentious Lass in the race mentioned above and seemingly had every chance but just had no answers for the eventual winner. She’ll find the fence/lead I think and with a big jockey upgrade to Todd Pannell, she’ll take running down.
16 Grandma Gail (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is one I can entertain for wider multiples. She ran two weeks at Morphettville in the Rivkin race and I thought did a really good job, closing off with purpose from near last on the turn when beaten under eight lengths, but the track was bottomless then and she did make up ground. Not sure I can back her to win but is a first four threat.
Race 9. (17:00) Sanders Fodder Hcp (62) 1200m
10 McCain (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) has done little wrong since joining Michael Hickmott outside the fact he is struggling to put a win on the board. Thought it would come last start at Murray Bridge but he couldn’t quite get there when a narrow third to Pegasi. Reckon a truly run race will see him sit back and get his chance to finish over the top.
6 Tupoleu (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is a track/distance winner from two back on wet ground so in that regard, he has a bit going for him. He then went to Morphettville two weeks back and just couldn’t pick his feet up in the run when down the track behind Rivkin. Back to Gawler, a track he loves, and back slightly in depth, he can run a much improved race.
18 Willaston (Bet Now:ย $SP.00) is one to include in wider multiples. He has been kept on ice since June 14 Balaklava when a tad on the plain side at Balaklava over 1050m. He has run well on heavy ground previously and his recent tick over trial was a lovely piece of work. Right down in the weights after the claim, I think he is in with a shout at a big price.
