The Adelaide Festival of Racing continues this Saturday at Morphettville where we see a Group l double header, the Schweppes Oaks (2000m) and UBET Classic (1200m). The weather is overcast, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (12:35) : Quayclean Handicap 2000m:
Back Me: 6 Tidy Prophet (Best Odds: $4.40) was first up since the Adelaide Cup when running over 1700m at Gawler where she ran well when fourth to Ustinov’s Fury. Back up to a more ideal trip and gets the services of Craig Williams.
Big Danger: 3 Killarney Kid (Best Odds: $1.70) has been in ripping form in recent times, including a spank job of his rivals here at the track/distance a fortnight back. Bit more depth here, but on form, he is the one to beat.
Roughie: 7 Have Plenty (Best Odds: $6.50) ran over 1950m on the Parks track last weekend and was given a lovely steer from Bowditch to get the job done narrowly but impressively. Harder here, but now he has that winning feel, he could well measure up.
Race Two (13:10) : MAC Drink Driving? GROW UP Handicap 1600m:
Back Me: 10 Coachella (Best Odds: $26.00) is on the back up after racing on the Parks track last Saturday where she just got too far back and never got into the race behind Master Sommelier. Back on the course proper is a big tick, down in the weights and she should be at peak fitness.
Big Danger: 4 Zebrinz (Best Odds: $3.00) looks ready to fire now after a strong second last time out in the Gold Mile at Caulfield behind the well performed Red Bomber. Ollie rides and just has to overcome the draw to be a contender.
Roughie: 8 Tenere (Best Odds: $16.00) is a stablemate of Coachella who ran over this track/distance last time out and wasn’t suited by the slow tempo when finishing fourth to the well performed Into The Mist. More genuine tempo here will suit and there is upside.
Race Three (13:50) : Seven News Queen Adelaide Stakes 1050m:
Back Me: 4 Tris (Best Odds: $2.50) was given a lovely steer off a hot speed to win the Breeders Stakes here last time out. Meets a similar field here and only has to repeat that effort to go close here.
Big Danger: 5 Moshki (Best Odds: $6.50) ran fifth in that race mentioned above and she did too much work to hunt up and lead and that effort told over the final furlong. With a more conservative ride, she can finish off and attack the line better.
Roughie: 10 Invisible Girl (Best Odds: $15.00) is the intriguing one. Debuts for the Kennewell camp off the back of no trials, but is well bred, draws well and stable have had a good season with their youngsters. Watch the market.
Race Four (14:30) : DC McKay Stakes 1100m:
Back Me: I was filthy I dropped off 2 Nostradamus (Best Odds: $6.50) in the Irwin because his trial was excellent and he wasn’t bad first up. The key to this horse is a dry track, anything worse than a good 4 and he is hopeless.
Big Danger: 3 Thermal Current (Best Odds: $4.40) ran in the Gold Sprint at Caulfield and worked home strongly late behind Miss Promiscuity, who will be a contender in the UBET later on in the program. Not much depth here, draws well…hard to beat.
Roughie: 8 Scratchy Lass (Best Odds: $11.00) is an absolute beauty for John Hickmott. She hasn’t raced since sprouting wings to win the Oakbank Stakes during their Carnival in a race where the form has held up alright. Trial since has been sharp and if she can get three wide cover, she can unleash.
Race Five (15:10) : UBET Stakes 1200m:
Back Me: I think the bookies have got the pride wrong with 1 Sooboog (Best Odds: $12.00). $13 looks good overs. On potential and what we saw early on, he is a Group l horse, but he just hasn’t put it all together. Now with Darren Weir, and we saw what he did with Rageese…I think Sooboog is a potentially better horse than Rageese.
Big Danger: 12 Almighty Girl (Best Odds: $8.50) ran in the Gold Sprint at Caulfield against some quality older horses and she was far from disgraced in running fifth given she was trapped wide no cover on speed. Just needs cover here to be a real threat.
Roughie: 6 Faatinah (Best Odds: $18.00) was smashed in betting when resuming here and aided by a peach of a steer from Matty Neilson, the gelding proved too good for an easier field than this. Still, the win was sharp and the market push was heavy, so I’ll respect that and his form from the Spring does read well for a race of this nature.
Race Six (15:50) : Schweppes Oaks 2000m:
Back Me: The bookies have got it right with 14 Abbey Marie (Best Odds: $5.00) being the favourite. What’s wrong is the price..she should be much shorter, because she is a high class filly who was outstanding in winning at Caulfield last time out and only has to bring that here to take care of this lot.
Big Danger: 8 Bengal Cat (Best Odds: $10.00) has been given a lovely grounding for this. She was impressive last start in the Gold Reef (1600m) at Caulfield and really just gives every impression she will handle the trip and she is tough.
Roughie: 11 Lopartega (Best Odds: $21.00) might only come off a benchmark win at Bendigo, but the market support was strong that day and she absolutely toyed with the older horses. Distance won’t be an issue and she looks to have plenty of scope.
Race Seven (16:30) : UBET Classic 1200m:
Back Me: 18 Don’t Doubt Mamma (Best Odds: $7.00) produced an unbelievable finish from a seemingly hopeless position to win the Redelva at this track/distance a fortnight back. Dunn is back aboard, and she draws to get good cover and ambush late.
Big Danger: 9 Sabatini (Best Odds: $26.00) is a class mare that resumed with a narrow but impressive second at Caulfield behind the well performed Miss Promiscuity, who franked the form by winning her next start. She is a very good horse early on in a prep and she can produce a brilliant closing sectional.
Roughie: 16 Private Secretary (Best Odds: $26.00) is one of the more consistent mares in Sydney racing at the moment but just can’t quite crack it for a win. She ran well last start at Randwick in the Wenona Girl at this distance and was outstanding when a close up second to Savoureux, beaten just under a length. She is a bomb when on the fresh side, and she looked sharp in a recent trial.
Race Eight (17:10) : Hughes Chauffeured Limousines Queen Of The South Stakes 1600m:
Back Me : 5 Hijack Hussy (Best Odds: $13.00) is becoming a real money muncher, so she is on her last chance with me. Just couldn’t get into the race last time out at Flemington on Anzac Day, and on that run, she is hard to have, but perhaps Ollie can weave his magic on her.
Big Danger: 9 French Emotion (Best Odds: $3.80) is a talented mare for Chris Waller who comes off a last start second to Scarlett Billows in the Gold Distaff at Caulfield. Up to the mile is of some worry, but I’ll leave it with Craig Williams.
Roughie: 12 Marli Magic (Best Odds: $51.00) could be an improver here. She also comes through the Gold Distaff where she ran midfield to Scarlett Billows. She looks the only leader here, and if she can pinch a sectional, she will take some beating at odds.
BEST BET: Race Six Number 14 Abbey Marie
