The Carnival is done and dusted at Brisbane but the depth is still around and it’s on show this Saturday across nine races at Doomben. The weather is overcast, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:42) Beach House Bar & Grill Handicap (70) 1050m
This is absolute dart board job. I’ve landed with 5 Desert Cowboy (Bet Now: $11.00) but it’s a race I don’t want a bar of. He’s a lightly raced gelding for Lindsay Hatch who is building up a pretty solid CV. Surprising drifter in betting last week at Ipswich but aided by a hot speed, he sat off it and had last say, nailing Beraht near the peg. Expect something similar in order for him to get the win.
3 Lord Marmaduke (Bet Now: $7.50) is the best horse in the race for mine, but his endeavour and will to win has definitely been questioned at times. Looked to have his chance last time out over 1200m at Ipswich but was nabbed near the peg by the progressive O’Dea three year old Tabbing. Got good form behind him. Just needs to put a win on the board.

Race 2. (12:17) Hotel Beach House Handicap (85) 1350m
I think 5 Inspired Estelle (Bet Now: $8.00) can get the job done here. Toby Edmonds trains this mare, who has been a borderline blacktype mare for a little while but is just a touch down on confidence at the moment. In saying that, her run at this track/distance a fortnight ago was better when a little unlucky not to finish closer behind Manaya. She should be ready to show her best now.
3 Manaya (Bet Now: $5.50) will probably go down as best known for being the little sister of Hot Danish, but she’s got a pretty decent record next to her name. The win here two weeks back was very good, coming with a well timed run under a lovely steer from Blake Shinn. Creeping up in the weights but has class.
7 Foxy Housewife (Bet Now: $3.30) is flying at the moment for the David Vandyke team and she definitely deserves a win. Beaten narrowly two back in the Gai Waterhouse at the hands of Magic Alibi before racing in the race won by Manaya and got a mile back but worked home strongly to run fourth. She’s getting close to a win and should be respected.
Race 3. (12:52) Duporth Tavern Handicap 1350m
6 Miss Quaintly (Bet Now: $9.50) gets the nod for me. David Vandyke trains this filly, who defied a betting drift when debuting with a tough win over 1000m on her home track at the Sunny Coast, proving too good for Winter Passage, who franked that form with a good effort last Saturday in the B J McLachlan. 1350m looks no issue and this is a winnable race.
7 Tatcee (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Chris Waller trained daughter of Foxwedge who was heavily backed when debuting at Beaudesert and though she wasn’t taking on much, it was a pretty dominant win under Ben Looker. Time was the slowest of the three 1200m races that meeting, but nothing too alarming, and she has upside.
4 Trainspotting (Bet Now: $14.00) is a son of Choisir for the David Vandyke team who debuted over 1200m on his home track at the Sunny Coast and gee it was a tough win. He was on speed, copped pressure and for the most part, he was there to be beaten, but he found plenty late under Michael Hellyer and got the win. He’ll be on speed again and 1350m looks okay.
Race 4. (13:27) Casa Cibo Handicap (80) 2040m
62kg…yep, it’s an almighty ask, but gee despite that, 1 Honey Toast (Bet Now: $4.00) has lengths on these in terms of class. Toowoomba Cup, Wayne Wilson, Tatts Cup his last three and has been far from disgraced. Has carried 59kg successfully in the past. and he’s a big boy, so the weight, though on face value is an ask, I think he’ll be okay. Class should get him home.
5 Ready For Danger (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Matty Dunn trained gelding who is racing really well at the moment. Won a couple on the bounce at the Gold Coast before racing in the Provincial Final at Ipswich where I thought Byrne gave the horse every chance but was just beaten in a real blanket finish. He’s hard fit, in form, and I think back to 2040m will suit.
7 Denbern (Bet Now: $4.80) comes through the Ipswich Mile won by Zamex and I thought he was pretty tough in defeat. He was on speed, with the tempo being pretty genuine. Had every right to drop out but he kept finding and was only swamped very late. Would love to see him ridden with cover. He’ll be more effective IMO.
Race 5. (14:02) Rawgroup Plate (Class 3) 1640m
6 Cedarwood (Bet Now: $7.00) looks to have the right form on the board. Just under a month between runs since racing over the Warwick Farm mile where he settled near the speed and fought on pretty well in defeat behind Chalmers. Also has form around Higher Ground and Seaway, which reads so well for this. Happy to be with him.
1 Hallelujah Boy (Bet Now: $1.40) is a Kris Lees trained former Japanese galloper who finally put a win on the board last time out over 2000m at Randwick where he was backed off the map and under a lovely ride from Jason Collett, he proved too good. Tick over trial last week at Cessnock was encouraging enough…just back in trip the concern.
5 Antigone (Bet Now: $27.00) is a daughter of Encosta De Lago for the Barry Lockwood yard who has been pretty good in two runs back from a spell. Ran over this track/distance last Wednesday where she got back on a shifty track and loomed on the turn but ran out of puff late. Third up now, she should just about be ready fitness wise.
Race 6. (14:42) Chu The Phat Handicap 1050m
2 Miss Exfactor…(Bet Now: $4.50) just how good is she? Well I’m not sure, but all you can do is win and that is what she has done in two runs this time in. Defied a betting drift to win first up at the Gold Coast before going to the Sunny Coast where she was dominant and outstanding, beating a field which had more depth than what she’ll face here. Keen.
6 Basara (Bet Now: $4.80) is a ripping daughter of Nicconi for Tony Sears who rarely runs a bad race. She sat on speed in the Ipswich 3YO race three weeks ago and gave a solid kick, looking home for a couple of strides, but was nabbed late by Envy Of All. 1100m is a stretch, so back to 1050m and back to Doomben are big ticks.
13 Goodonya Sonja (Bet Now: $11.00) is a filly resuming for Lindsay Gough. She had two runs to kick off her career in the Autumn, winning on debut over 1000m at the Sunny Coast before a close up seventh behind the well performed Mishani Bullitt. Nice trial win here last week and wet track definitely no issue.
Race 7. (15:22) Madame Wu Handicap (80) 1200m
9 Qiji Phoenix (Bet Now: $2.80) is a classy son of Not A Single Doubt resuming for the Toby Edmonds team. He hasn’t raced for over 12 months since finishing midfield in the Sires Produce at Eagle Farm behind Melody Belle. Now with Toby Edmonds and his two trials leading in for this prep have looked quite good to the eye, and being by Not A Single Doubt, he’ll swim.
7 Courtza King (Bet Now: $4.00) is the big query here. Tony Gollan trains this Triple Crown horse and on his best form, he’s certainly good enough to beat these. Good fresh record, likes Doomben and I was really taken with his trial win here on June 26, smashing the clock in winning impressively. Probably prefers a dry track, but still including him.
4 Nothing Box (Bet Now: $21.00) is a former Chris Waller galloper having his first run for the Scott Morrisey team. This horse, when racing in Sydney, was quite effective at the mile but his form had tapered off towards the end. He resumes without a public trial next to his name, but can sprint well fresh and wet track no issue.
Race 8. (16:02) Bottle-O Handicap 1640m
3 Someday (Bet Now: $6.50) for me but it’s a race I wouldn’t want to invest in. He resumed in the Spear Chief at the Sunny Coast where he got a mile back and couldn’t come on behind I’m A Rippa. Been freshened up and has got his confidence going with a trial win here last week. Wet track certainly helps, and at his best, he beats these.
10 Allknight Saint (Bet Now: $13.00) is an eight year old racing in near career best form at the moment for the Lauren Herne camp. He has won his past two in pretty impressive fashion, though I will say two back at the Sunny Coast, beating Liberty Island isn’t that difficult to do. More depth this time around but he’s racing in a real purple patch.
2 Vassal (Bet Now: $20.00) is a handy stayer that resumes for the Chris Waller yard. He hasn’t raced since the Summer when racing really competitively, ending the prep in the Torney Cup at the Valley behind Double Bluff. Not normally a first up performer, but his two trials in Sydney have been solid enough.
Race 9. (16:37) Hervey Bay Hotel & Resort Handicap (85) 1350m
3 No Annamossity (Bet Now: $3.70) on top for me. Rob Heathcoate has this horse going really well at the moment, his last two efforts at this track/distance. Bolted up two back before not having much luck here two weeks ago when third to Manaya. Fourth up now, so he should be hard fit and he does love racing at Doomben.
I think 5 Desmon’s Pride (Bet Now: $7.00) should just about be ready to show his best third up from a spell. First two runs this time in over 1200m on his home track at the Gold Coast have been pretty good behind Tycoon Ace and Kievann respectively, both of which are city class performers. Is a track/distance winner andΒ always have to respect the stable when they come to town.
10 Lord Coconuts (Bet Now: $19.00) is an Encosta De Lago gelding resuming for the Tony Gollan team. This bloke was pretty consistent during the Spring/Summer where he didn’t win a race but wasn’t far away. Good fresh record, has trialled well leading in and 1350m fresh tells me there is intent to run well first up.
