The Wagga Carnival concludes on Friday where it is Wagga Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Wagga Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Wagga Cup
Race 1. (12:40) Wagga Rsl Club Country Mdn 1200m
I think you can have three bets here and make a profit. On top is 15 Mick’s Mate (Bet Now: $3.90), on debut for Keith Dryden. He has had two trials to get ready for start one and I have been quite taken with each time he has stepped out. He has moved very well without being extended, so hopefully he does have the engine under the hood when placed under pressure.
17 Thieving (Bet Now: $4.80) is a son of Nicconi for Terry Robinson that is on debut. He trialled around a month ago at Kembla when on speed throughout before being clicked up by Tommy Berry and he went through his gears nicely to win the trial. Tommy sticks for the first start, so watch the market.
That pair look the standouts. The saver at odds is 9 Toretto (Bet Now: $16.00). Son of Press Statement for Matty Dale that resumes and returns to racing as a gelding after a two run Winter prep where he ran quite well on each occasion after getting a mile back in the run. Resumes without a trial, but Jason Collett booked…I think he’s value at double figures.
Race 2. (13:15) Toyota Material Handling (c3) 1000m
7 Merc (Bet Now: $3.60) looks the safe option. Joseph/Jones trained gelding that has been given a mini freshen up, six weeks between runs since racing at the Sapphire Coast on testing ground when second to Scalded after being under pressure a fair way out, perhaps not handling the testing track. Gets a firmer surface this time around, maps well and gets Tommy Berry to steer.
4 Delightful Dream (Bet Now: $3.20) is a stablemate of the top tip who has found winning form and could well go on with it. Got a win on the board over 1100m at Nowra last time out. Looked in a bit of trouble early on in the straight but found plenty late and finished best. Just where he gets to in the run from the gate.
3 Delago At Ease (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Phil Sweeney trained gelding that should improve from the resumption, which came a few weeks ago at this track.distance when pressing forward from a wide gate to land on speed. Tried hard but just felt the pinch late. If he can get luck from the draw, he’s a first four threat.
Race 3. (13:50) Inglis Rural Property (bm58) 1300m
I think 2 Villainaire (Bet Now: $9.50) only runs well here. Chris Davis trains this four year old, who resumed over 1170m at Wangaratta when on speed throughout and he gave a really good kick under Kissick. Just couldn’t quite finish it off when second to Rocket Empire. He’ll take improvement off that and the time they ran relative to the meeting was strong.
11 Loving Cilla (Bet Now: $3.20) is a talented daughter of Reliable Man for Joe Ible that resumes. Hasn’t raced since December 19 when unlucky in a Highway at Randwick won by Another One, who of course went on to run so well in the Country Championships Final, so the form does read super. No trial, but Rachel King booked, so watch the market.
The rise to 1300m should suit 14 Kruanui (Bet Now: $23.00). He ran over 1170m at Wangaratta at the same meeting as Villainaire, but in a different race. He got back and made up solid ground without threatening. The overall time was average compared to the race Villainaire contested, but you will get a decent about price about this horse, who will be strong late.
Race 4. (14:25) Byrne Trailers Queen Turf-bm66 1400m
5 Splendiferous (Bet Now: $1.80) is short, but she should be winning. Progressive filly for the WaterBott camp that is 2/2 to start the prep, both coming at Newcastle. Resumed with a maiden win over 1200m before stepping up to 1400m and getting the job done in good style. Just no depth here I feel and she’s clearly the one to beat.
3 Charm Wing (Bet Now: $8.00) is racing quite well at the moment for Julie Scott. This mare has had a few weeks off since winning impressively at Ballarat, sitting back in the run before slicing her way through the field and finishing best on a wet track. Will need luck in the run, but is in a purple patch.
I think 11 Kathaire (Bet Now: $14.00) can be an improver at odds. I’m prepared to forgive her last start effort at Orange. The track was officially rated a Soft5, but on times, it was borderline heavy, and she’s a mare who hates getting her feet wet. Better suited here on top of the ground, so win wouldn’t shock at all.
Race 5. (15:00) Walsh/blair Country Magic-bm66 1200m
11 King’s Trust (Bet Now: $2.70) for me. Terry Robinson trained gelding that resumed in a Randwick Highway just under two weeks ago where he got back to near last in the run, wide with cover, and worked home strongly at the end when third to a progressive animal in Head Start. Tommy is back on, should get good three wide cover and launch.
3 Zelago (Bet Now: $6.50) gets the Blinkers back on and drops in grade after contesting Federals his past couple. Has sat on speed in those runs and has stuck on okay. Just hasn’t quite been able to get the job done. Gets in well after the claim, should sit near the front and give a bold sight in a competitive race.
The map horse at a big price could be 15 Waiting For A Mate (Bet Now: $41.00), who resumes for Norm Loy. Hasn’t raced since November 6 when doing work from a wide gate to sit on speed and just tired late. Resumes without a trial, but could get the ideal sit behind Sizzleonthebridge and be strong at the end.
Race 6. (15:40) Jrc Electrical Guineas (bm74) 1600m
I’m really surprised 1 Black Duke (Bet Now: $4.20) isn’t favourite here. Yes, has the 62kg to carry, but clear air, he wins the Hawkesbury Guineas last Saturday instead of a desperately unlucky third to Exoboom. That form just reads far superior to anything engaged here, so $5.5/$6 is a great bet I feel.
9 Go Troppo (Bet Now: $14.00) is the hard fit/in form horse that looks to have good upside. I liked the way he knuckled down to win his maiden over the mile at Goulburn last time. He had to wear down the horse in front and once he did, he drew clear late. He could well go on with it, but bumps into a smart field.
7 Call Me Artie (Bet Now: $61.00) drops miles in grade/depth after contesting the Frank Packer Plate at Randwick. Found the class a bit rich so forget he went around behind Senor Toba, who looks a leading Queensland Derby candidate. This is more his level and I think can easily bounce back here.
Race 7. (16:20) Wagga Wagga Cup 2000m
I reckon Richard Litt has worked out 8 Mr Marathon Man (Bet Now: $9.00). He was an impressive winner of the Canberra Cup two back. Freshened up and ran over 1400m at Randwick in more or less a prep run for this race. He closed off really well I thought behind Rocha Clock. Straight to 2000m and he’ll be strong late.
4 Paths Of Glory (Bet Now: $5.00) has been up a little while, but gee he is one tough bugger who will put himself near the speed and give his all. He did that last time out in the JRA Plate at Randwick. He was there to be run down, but he found plenty under pressure, fended them off and was able to score. If this becomes a true staying contest, he’ll be one of the strongest late.
11 Maid Of Ore (Bet Now: $20.00) should be suited up to 2000m for Nick Olive. This mare ran over 1800m on Anzac Day on the Kenso track. Was near the speed throughout and battled on pretty well I thought when fourth to Mr Dependable. Should get a more genuine tempo this time around and has upside.
Race 8. (16:55) Gallagher Insurance Brokers-c1 1200m
Chips in with a good thing in the last with 8 Monterey Zar (Bet Now: $2.30) for Gary Colvin. Resumed at this track/distance a month ago where he got back to near last in the run from the wide gate and launched late, producing the best late splits of the race when second to Bellarina Magic. Tick over trial was such a nice piece of work and if gate one is used to advantage, he wins.
9 Namimo (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained mare that resumes. Hasn’t raced since September 3 on the Synthetic at Ballarat when at the end of her prep and looking for the paddock when down the track. Looked sharp in a recent trial win at Echuca and stable should be respected at this track.
6 Archie’s A Star (Bet Now: $15.00) is racing well for Paul Murray. Had the bias in his corner two back at Albury but that aside, he was still a strong winner. He then went to Nowra where he had a suck run behind the speed and tried hard. Just couldn’t quite finish the job. Harder here, drawn wide, but hard to knock the way he’s racing at the moment.
