The South Australian racing carnival kicks off this Saturday with the lead up towards the Adelaide Cup, the $120,000 Group lll Lord Reims Stakes (2600m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race One (13:24) : Schweppes Handicap 1050m:
Back Me: 2 Pomp (Best Odds: $1.50) was heavily backed when racing on the Parks track and was lifted over the line by Matthew Neilson to win quite impressively, and ran good time to back it up. Looks to have a fair bit of upside and he should take some beating.
Big Danger: 1 Counter Pulse (Best Odds: $4.60) is a very talented youngster that resumes for the Macdonald/Gluyas yard. His last prep ended with a really solid fourth to Wild Rain in the Lightning over this track/distance. No trials leading in, he has class and is well weighted after the claim.
Roughie: 5 Red Fire Lady (Best Odds: $18.00) debuted at Strathalbyn last Wednesday and showed superb speed throughout to sit on speed and win impressively. Stable is having a good run and despite the rise in grade, she can definitely measure up.
Race Two (14:02) : Holdfast Insurance Handicap (70) 1600m:
Back Me: 3 Mail It In (Best Odds: $3.50) ran over 1550m on the Parks track a fortnight back and broke through for a well deserved maiden win, beating home stablemate Battle Brewing comfortably. Now that he has won the race, he can go right on with it and continue this winning sequence.
Big Danger: 2 Battle Brewing (Best Odds: $3.20) ran second in that race and he tried hard where he sat on speed most of the way but kicked on very strongly to run second, beaten just under a length. Gets a decent little weight pull on the stablemate now and can definitely turn the tables.
Roughie: 1 Metier (Best Odds: $5.50) ran over 1250m on the Parks track three weeks back and worked to the line strongly late in the piece when fourth to Karlovasi, who ran well last Saturday to frank the form. He will eat up the mile now, stable flying and has a touch of class on his side.
Race Three (14:39) : UBET Adelaide Cup March 14 Handicap (90) 1200m:
Back Me: 8 Charles In Charge (Best Odds: $3.40) ran fifth behind Society Man at the Valley and he was pretty good I thought without winning. It has been a while since he has carried this kind of weight. You have to go back to June last year at Cranbourne when he carried this sort of weight and that race carried much more depth than what he faces here.
Big Danger: 2 Lonrockstar (Best Odds: $2.40) ran over 1200m at Flemington last time out and was a bit disappointing in the straight when finishing down the track behind We’ve Got This, beaten 6.5L. I think the key here is back in depth where he should go close to getting back to winning form.
Roughie: 7 Miss Adele (Best Odds: $8.00) is a talented mare for John Hyam who is in ripping form at the moment. She ran over this track/distance a month back and sprouted wings late to nail Pepper The Pin right on the peg. That horse has since run well, and despite the rise in grade, Miss Adele is a leading contender.
Race Four (15:19) : Projection Graphics Handicap (82) 1600m:
Back Me: 2 The New Boy (Best Odds: $2.80) ran over 1550m on the Parks track a fortnight back where he sat on speed and kicked on strongly under hard riding from Josh Cartwright to get the job done narrowly but impressively. Looks better suited on the course proper and will once again bowl along in front and give them something to chase.
Big Danger: 10 Husson’s Shout (Best Odds: $5.50) ran over 1250m on the Parks track two weeks ago where he sat on speed and didn’t quite finish it off when running second last to Bay Road. He will love the step back up to the mile, stable flying and is better suited on the course proper.
Roughie: 7 Loncava (Best Odds: $18.00) resumes here for Tony McEvoy after running over 2500m on this track when running second to Tunes, who has run well on a couple of occasions since. He can run well when produced on the fresh side and I like it is at the mile, telling me he is forward enough to run a cheeky race here.
Race Five (15:59) : UBET Cinderella Stakes 1050m:
Back Me: 9 Moshki (Best Odds: $16.00) for me here at a price. I think she should have won last time out at the Valley, but a split decision by the rider went the wrong way and she ran an unlucky second. There was good market support for her that night, so I’ll respect that, and despite this being a quality race, she has race fitness and decent form lines.
Big Danger: 4 La Renarde (Best Odds: $3.20) is a very talented filly for John Sadler who showed good promise in two runs, starting off with a debut second at Flemington before running fifth to Sword Of Light in the Blue Diamond Preview. Freshened up, and on natural talent, she has these covered IMO. Just a query on how fit she is.
Roughie: 11 Neapolitan (Best Odds: $9.00) resumes here for Phillip Stokes. She had one run back in November when second to Bullion Wolf, who has gone on to run well in Melbourne and ran well last Saturday on the Parks track. Recent Gawler trial win was very impressive and stable is flying with their youngsters.
Race Six (16:39) : Mittys Handicap (70) 1800m:
Back Me: 1 Adirondack (Best Odds: $3.20) has been very good since joining the Shawn Mathrick yard after formerly racing with Godolphin. He was smashed in betting last Wednesday at Ladbrokes Park and that support was justified with a gritty on speed win. This race looks easier and only has to rise a kilo. Looks the clear horse to beat.
Big Danger: 9 Acid Flo (Best Odds: $18.00) ran over 1550m on the Parks track a fortnight back and stuck to the task quite gamely when running third to tough Victorian galloper The New Boy. Looks better suited on the course proper, hard fit and is a definite threat to the top tip.
Roughie: 13 Moosem (Best Odds: $26.00) was given a month freshen up before racing over 1700m at Gawler where he produced a brilliant turn of foot from the back to win by a space and with a bit hand. He is a late bloomer, but I am confident he will measure up.
Race Seven (17:19) : James Boags Premium Lord Reims Stakes 2600m:
Back Me: 3 Signoff (Best Odds: $1.35) comes through the Torney Cup where he hadn’t raced since Boxing Day and he looked home, but the fitness just gave way and had to settle for a narrow second. Should improve big time here and given his record, he does look so well suited at the weights. $1.35 looks generous.
Big Danger: 4 Gamblin’ Guru (Best Odds: $9.50) ran second in the Birthday Cup (2000m) here last time out and looked home but was nabbed in the last stride by Go Dreaming in a thrilling finish. Little query on him running the trip, but he has class and should take some beating with the gate.
Roughie: 10 Tunes (Best Odds: $51.00) ran over 2400m on the Parks track a fortnight back where he looked home but was nailed in the last stride or so by Nisos, who franked the form by winning seven days later, so the form reads well, and though this horse has been up for a long time, he continues to race well and will be there for a long way.
Race Eight (17:54) : MAC Drink Driving? GROW UP 1200m:
Back Me: 6 Leia (Best Odds: $6.00) resumed on Colac Cup Day and was just even I thought when running fourth to Royal Spinner, who has performed well in town previously. This mare has also performed well in town when trained by Team Corstens, but now with Darren Weir, she can bounce back to the winners list.
Big Danger: 9 Petrov (Best Odds: $12.00) ran at Pakenham last time out where he sat on speed and kicked on strongly to win narrowly but impressively. Both placegetters have run very good races since and stable is having a really good run at the moment. Should prove hard to beat.
Roughie: 1 El Prado Gold (Best Odds: $14.00) ran over 1000m here a month back and closed off strongly when running third to Wilander Princess, beaten just over a length in a really good effort. Has to carry a fair bit of weight, but he will be strong late at the end and will be fitter.
