4/2/2023 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Sandown, Chairman’s Stakes day

3 Fire (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a talented animal for Team Hawkes that resumes. He has the engine under the hood to be Stakes class IMO but his racing manners can let him down. He is a horse who can fly fresh and I though he had plenty in hand in a trial at Rosehill last week. Likely will be spotting them a start but will be strong at the end and within range, he can take this out.

1 Inundation (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has to be given another chance IMO. He gave them a spanking fresh at The Valley before going to Sandown where most, myself included, thought he was an absolute moral, but he let punters down with a very plain last 100m and was run down late by On The Lead. Fresh legs seems best for him and he should get control comfortably. Confident he bounces back. If not, it’s a life ban.

2 Zorrro’s Dream (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has returned in good order. He was somewhat unwanted in betting when resuming down the straight on New Years Day and while he was never a threat to Jungle Jim, I liked the way he found the line to finish third in a good return. Fast run 1000m should be ideal for him and hard to beat if he can settle closer in the run.

I’m with 3 Serasana (Bet Now:  $SP.00). Griffiths/De Kock camp train this filly, who was backed with confidence when debuting over this track/distance back on December 10 and gee she put them away with ease, showing good change up speed to dash clear late and won by a space, running time. Tick over jumpout was pretty sharp too and she will likely have the drop on Veecee, hopefully finishing over the top.

2 Veecee (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the only threat IMO. Three weeks between runs since putting away an average bunch IMO down the straight at Flemington. He lapped up the heat it seemed and gave them a spanking, running solid enough time relative to the meeting. Has the right racing pattern and with the 1100m run under the belt, he should be strong late here.

9 Written Bligh (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a daughter of Written By for Grahame Begg that is on debut. This girl was down to run in the Blue Diamond Preview last week but was scratched and has been kept on ice for this. Her recent jumpout work has been encouraging enough to suggest she does have talent and certainly enough under the hood to be more than competitive on debut in a race like this.

2 Blakmax (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is racing like he will eat up 1800m for Lindsey Smith. He has looked very one paced in both runs back from a spell, resuming over 1200m at Geelong before going to 1400m here where he took an eternity to wind up but surged hard late to just get there. He’ll love the rise in trip and is only third up, so he should have good room for improvement.

1 Hennessy Lad (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has the runs on the board to command respect. He took on the older horses over the mile at The Valley last time and didn’t quite get the rub of the green when it was needed. That said, he somewhat had his chance when a close up fourth to Ima Shelby. He’s racing like 1800m will suit and he does have the hard race fitness/experience under the belt.

5 Northern Barrage (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has been pretty good in a two start career for Mick Kent. Thought he did more than enough on debut on the home deck at Cranbourne before going to Pakenham where they stepped up to 1400m and while he took a while to get into his work, he got better as the race went on and was impressive in winning. Looks like a rise in trip is fine and is in the right camp.

1 Benedetta (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to be a filly heading in the right direction for Jason Warren. She has won two of her three career outings, the last two starts, the latest at this track/distance where she made an absolute mess of them from off the speed and got better as the race went on. You’d think there is only improvement to come and should that be the case, good luck beating her.

5 Belmia (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a good filly resuming for Jamie Edwards and is certainly in with a shout. She had a three run prep in the Spring to start her career, ending the prep with a very good fourth in the Twilight Glow on Zipping Classic Day. Like that she resumes at 1300m and the big track should see her get every chance to sit back and launch late.

4 Discerning (Bet Now:  $SP.00) should be around the mark for Team Snowden and is one of the main contenders. Good from the back two starts ago at Mornington before going here where she got back and did make up solid headway but was never a threat to Benedetta. She was 1000m to 1300m there so she has room for improvement and can settle closer in the run.

12 Unusual Culture (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has the engine under the hood to measure up against these. Resumed over 1200m here against the Mares where she got a fair way out of her ground and took a while to wind into her work but she balanced up, focused and rocketed late, just missing out on picking up Field Of Praise. J Kah on, fitter, up in trip, it all points to her proving hard to beat.

9 British Columbia (Bet Now:  $SP.00) appears ready to rock and roll as he gets towards peak fitness. He’s been excellent in two runs back from a spell. Game second fresh at Sandown before going to Flemington where he attempted to lead throughout and he did give a strong kick but couldn’t quite get there when third to Shove Over. I reckon with a more conservative steer and a bunny to chase, he’ll take beating.

13 Rheinberg (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has done little wrong in two Australian runs for Team Hayes, both coming at Sandown. Dominant maiden win on the Hillside fresh before going to Lakeside where he ran a game second to a pretty smart animal, Nunthorpe. Tricky gate, but should slide forward and while I doubt he beats the first two, he should be around the mark.

I think this is an ideal kick off point for 11 Foujita San (Bet Now:  $SP.00), who resumes for Team Hawkes. He was touted as a Caulfield Guineas horse around this time last year but the Spring prep was a mess and he didn’t measure up. Been given a good break, starting again, he finds a thin benchmark race and his recent jumpout win was impressive. If he’s ready to go, I think he wins.

3 Daytona Bay (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a promising four year old for Peter Moody that is first up. He had a fruitful early Winter prep, winning three of four and when you look back. gee the form around him reads well with efforts around the likes of Jimmy The Bear and Cardinal Gem. 1300m fresh tells me he’s forward enough to run well, he maps ideally and gets J Kah.

7 Conqueror (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks to have returned to Australia for Team Hayes in pretty good order. He had a poor stint in Hong Kong so they sent him back to Team Hayes and he resumed over 1200m at The Valley where he was a big pass mark. He got back to near last in the run and was never a winning factor but didn’t mind the way he found the line late in the piece behind Dance To Dubai. Might want one more, but that return was encouraging enough to say he commands respect here.

10 Wrote To Arataki (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is flying for Matty Williams and no reason why she can’t win again. Two runs back from a spell have been excellent. Sat near last and worked home strongly fresh at Sandown behind Life Lessons before going to Flemington on New Years Day when J Kah took the mare to the front and the race was over, spanking her rivals. Has good upside being only third up and can’t drop off her.

2 Vespertine (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is hard to beat here. Grahame Begg trained mare that ran in the Standish at Flemington and given the way the race played out, just forget she went around behind Snapper given she was back in what was essentially a barrier trial. More genuine tempo here, she’ll be strong late and back to Mares grade, confident she can bounce back big time.

8 Forbidden City (Bet Now:  $SP.00) rates as one of the main contenders. Put together a couple of sharp wins on the bounce prior to racing a few weeks back at Flemington where I thought Nolen gave her a peach and was there to win but couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Belle Et Riche, Like her back in trip and she is a winner at the track so she can certainly bounce back.

6 Right You Are (Bet Now:  $SP.00) was a little while out of the winners list but is looking to make it three wins on the bounce here. I loved the ticker he showed to win at The Valley a few weeks ago. The race was there to be won and he dug in when required to lift between runners and get the win in a close finish. Hard fit, in form and has a good racing style. Hard to beat.

5 Detonator Jack (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks hard to beat. Four weeks between runs for the Maher/Eustace camp since racing over 1700m here where he did a really good job in defeat given it was essentially a barrier trial. He was back and considering So Si Bon ran a tick over 33 for the last 600m to win, Detonator Jack would have had to be out of this world to reel of the splits required to win. He’ll take beating provided it’s not another glorified barrier trial.

2 Grand Promenade (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a quality stayer that resumes. He didn’t really fire in the Spring after teasing to do something. They threw him in the Melbourne Cup but he found wet ground and failed to fire a shot behind Gold Trip. 1800m is clearly short of his best, but these stayers tend to run well fresh from time to time. Highly doubt he wins, but a first four threat.

2 St Lawrence (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is heading in the right direction and all things being equal, he wins again and remains unbeaten. To the eye, I reckon it was just a win at Sandown last time but they rode him warm, given he was a moral and wanted bad luck out of the equation. He had to struggle to get the win but got there. I think with a bunny to chase, a more patient ride, he can easily explode.

15 Threeandfourpence (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has come back in pretty good order. Both runs back from a spell have come at the mile at The Valley. Should have won first up but had zero luck in the run. He raced there again two weeks ago where he was tardy away and that sealed his fate, so forgive and forget he went around behind Ima Shelby. Convinced he’s come back super and getting to 1700m on the bigger track should only be beneficial.

13 San Fabrizio (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is in with a shout. First up run was super, second up syndrome next time out so forgive and forget. He then went to The Valley and was good late in the piece, beaten just over two lengths by Ima Shelby. The query is the 1700m but off the last start effort, he should be fine, and Waller wouldn’t persist if the horse wasn’t going any good.
