The Sunshine Coast will host their biggest raceday this Saturday where it is Caloundra Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:12) iStyle TV Handicap (75) 1400m
Happy to take a chance on 4 Glitra (Bet Now: $21.00). This gelding was formerly trained by John Sprague at Port Macquarie but is now with the Hulbert team at Eagle Farm and the stable does have a pretty good record with these tried horses. Two trials leading in have been quite good and this field does look thin depth wise.
7 General Cos (Bet Now: $8.50) is racing in career best form at the moment for the Neville Saunders camp. He has won his past two outings, both coming at Toowoomba over 1300m and 1200m respectively. Horror record at 1400m, but the way he is going at the moment, he just has to be included in a thin race.
14 Snapchat Girl (Bet Now: $9.50) would spank this field if she was at her best, but where she is at now, who knows. Solid effort with the big weight two back at the Gold Coast before contesting the Queensland Guineas where she was outclassed behind Sambro. This looks more her level and gets really good weight relief.
Race 2. (12:47) Glovers Concreting Handicap (75) 1400m
Now he’s got the winning, I’m confident that 12 Pressway (Bet Now: $11.00) can go on with it. Opening two runs this time in were outstanding in defeat prior to racing at Toowoomba where he was off the map and despite being flat footed on the turn, he picked up and his class came to the fore late. Great record here, hard fit…ticks the boxes.
6 Shogun Sun (Bet Now: $2.00) looks the horse to beat. Kelly Schweida trains this three year old, who hasn’t been far away of late in some very strong three year old races. Finds a decent 75 here, but looks to have class on these, blinkers on again and has trialled well since the Daybreak Lover. Only negative is that he’s too short.
7 Duke Of Christophe (Bet Now: $46.00) is a Brian Smith galloper that is resuming. He can be hit and miss at times, which he showed last prep, winning a couple of races, but also did produce a couple of howlers. Likes racing here, is a first up winner and thought his trial behind Trommelschlagen was quite good. Interesting to see what he does.
Race 3. (13:22) Summerveld Racing Stables Handicap (85) 1600m
5 Our Gravano (Bet Now: $3.40) wins if he brings his best, but to be fair, he hasn’t shown that in a few runs for Kris Lees since coming to Australia. In saying that, he has taken on races that have had far greater depth than what he faces. If he can’t produce anything decent here, he may as well go back to New Zealand. D-Day.
7 Zamex…(Bet Now: $4.60) he’s burned many holes in my pockets this time in, but he patched them up last time out in the Ipswich Mile with a pretty impressive win, aided by a 12/10 from Corey Brown, who made sure he was close enough on the turn and once he was within a couple of lengths, he was always going to win. Now his confidence is up, he can go on with it.
8 Rosie Posie (Bet Now: $8.00) comes through the race won by Zamex at Ipswich and her effort wasn’t too bad I thought considering she was ridden a touch against her pattern, settling closer in the run and not quite finishing off. I think with a cold ride, and with 51kg on her back, she’s certainly capable of figuring in the finish.
Race 4. (13:57) B J McLachlan Classic 1200m
Giving the nod to 2 King Of The North (Bet Now: $13.00) for the Mick Mair, and 1200m first up tells me there is intent for her to go close to winning first up. Her form in the Spring/Summer was very good, including a placing at the Gold Coast behind Sunlight. No trials leading is a bit unusual for the stable and the claim for stable apprentice Tay Williams, I think he only runs well from the gate.
7 Tipping (Bet Now: $7.50) is a handy looking filly for Chris Anderson who produced a brilliant finishing burst to win on debut over 900m at the Gold Coast before going to the feature 2YO race at Ipswich where I thought she was very good behind Unconditional. She should have no trouble with six furlongs and rates highly.
11 Winter Passage (Bet Now: $13.00) is a local filly trained by Stuart Kendrick who was heavily backed when resuming over 1000m here in a maiden and I think she should be forgive for her failure given she copped serious heat on speed and condition just bottomed out late. I think with a bit of cover, she’ll be better off.
Race 5. (14:37) Provincial Sprinters Series Final (80) 1200m
3 Charlie Cat (Bet Now: $15.00) is the very interesting runner. This bloke resumed a fortnight back over 1200m at Kilcoy and stuck to the task really well in defeat behind Rising Stock, beaten around a head. He has a really good second up record and Ryan Plumb has let go of probably a full book at the Gold Coast for this one ride.
4 Exceedingly (Bet Now: $4.50) looks to be going really well for the Heinrich/Rogers team and now just needs to put a win on the board.Ran over 1200m last time out on his home track and looked home but the class/quality of Manaya kicked in and that mare proved too good. Bit of an unknown on wet ground, but has the form.
17 Jetsonic (Bet Now: $3.50) is a Tony Gollan trained gelding who is racing quite well this time in but just can’t quite crack it for a win. He ran over 1200m on Ipswich Cup Day where he got back and wide but finished off okay late in the piece behind stablemate Of The Day. Has run well here before and the bigger track compared to Ipswich will suit.
Race 6. (15:17) XXXX Handicap 1000m
Pretty confident that 3 Irish Constabulary (Bet Now: $4.60) runs well. Far from disgraced two back here in the Moreton Cup before racing in the Healy last Saturday and being outclassed behind Spright. Looks suited back to this level and distance and is a bomb on his home track, and with the claim for Steph Lacy, he rates highly.
1 Dal Cielo (Bet Now: $5.00) looks so well placed here by the Kris Lees team. He comes through the June Stakes at Randwick three weeks ago where he was near the speed throughout but 1100m, wet track, Randwick…he was always going to be suspect late and that was the case when down the track behind Jungle Edge. 1000m looks better for him and has class.
Doubt 15 Mosrai (Bet Now: $27.00) wins but for exotics, I’d definitely chuck him in because they will go crazy in front. He ran over 1000m at Dubbo last time out and worked home strongly to run second to Sharpe Hussler, who was a proven Brisbane city horse before being sent to Cameron Crockett. Lacks the class, but he’ll be strong late and has run well on soft ground before.
Race 7. (15:57) Sunshine Coast Guineas 1600m
3 Seaway (Bet Now: $2.30) is a Chris Waller trained three year old who should take a power of beating here on the big track. His run in the QLD Guineas was a beauty when a close up second to stablemate Sambro. Loomed to win but the winner just packed too many punches. If we get the right odds and nothing silly short, he’ll take some beating.
2 The Bostonian (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Tony Pike trained three year old on the quick back up after bolting up last Saturday at Doomben where he led comfortably from the wide gate and he showed a lovely turn of foot when Michael Cahill asked for the effort. Mile no issue, has upside, in form…ticks alot of boxes.
16 Unique Magic (Bet Now: $12.00) has to be respected. Donald Baker trains this filly at Toowoomba and he has got her absolutely flying at the moment. Looked a good test at her last time out over the mile on her home track but it didn’t matter to her as she won by six and was extending the margin with every stride. Time was nothing flash, but she earns a spot given how well she is going.
Race 8. (16:32) Caloundra Cup 2400m
Landed with 1 Tradesman (Bet Now: $2.70) for the Weir team. This bloke scored a tough win in the Ipswich Cup before backing up a week later last Saturday in the Tatts Cup where he was no match for the brilliance of Divine Unicorn. No brilliant horses this time around, and I think it’ll be a true staying contest, which this horse will love.
2 Megablast (Bet Now: $4.00) looks well placed on a wet track here for the Nigel Tilley team. He hasn’t raced for four weeks since running a gutsy third in the O’Shea behind Egg Tart, with Tradesman running second. Does get a 1kg weight swing on that horse here and has fresh legs, plus Browne remains on, so he ticks a few boxes.
Happy to give 11 Miss Dubois (Bet Now: $20.00) another look. She was one I thought could run well in the Ipswich Cup but I think she was ridden a touch upside down, sitting on speed and chasing a tough nut in Ecuador, which is never an easy task. 2400m on the big track looks right up her alley and with a more conservative ride, she can be more effective.
Race 9. (17:12) Glasshouse Handicap 1400m
The likelihood of a wet track swings me the way of 18 Jamaican Rain (Bet Now: $5.25 FAT ODDS) for Richard Laming. She’s one of the better swimmers going around and is 2/2 this time in, her latest win coming over 1500m at the Valley when near odds on and doing the job nicely on speed. Was down to run in the Tatts Tiara, but couldn’t get a start so instead runs here and looks well placed.
9 Niccanova (Bet Now: $9.50 FAT ODDS) is a classy son of Nicconi resuming for the Steve Tregea team. This bloke hasn’t raced since March 10 when scoring an electric win over the 1350m at Doomben. Was first up since the Winter Carnival last year and was tipped out soon after. Resumes here with no trials, but unbeaten on wet ground and unbeaten first up.
8 Siegfried (Bet Now: $26.00 FAT ODDS) could be an improver at odds. He resumed in the Hinkler three weeks ago where he got back and was never really in the hunt but did get held up slightly when building momentum behind Savanna Amour. Good record at the Sunny Coast and second up at 1400m, I think he looks set up to run well.
Race 10. (17:50) BOQ Mooloolaba Handicap 1200m
2 Winter Bride (Bet Now: $2.05), with normal luck, should be winning this. Great first up win at Doomben before going to the Daybreak Lover at this track/distance where she was very game in defeat behind The Bostonian, and we saw what he did last Saturday. I think that form is good enough to just about beat these.
9 Divine Messenger (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Star Witness filly for Tony Gollan who was pretty good in the race Winter Bride won at Doomben before racing at Ipswich where she got a mile out of her ground but was excellent late behind Envy Of All. I think she’ll love the surroundings of the Sunny Coast and a fast run 1200m is ideal.
4 Sacred Rebel (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Tony Pike trained three year old who scored a good win at this track/distance at his Australian debut before racing last Saturday where he was ridden a touch upside down in a forgive run I thought behind stablemate The Bostonian. He’s better than that, so back to 1200m, give him another chance.
