Nine races will be run and won at Sandown Hillside on Saturday. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Anniversary Vase 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Anniversary Vase
Race 1. (12:10) Ive > Print Hcp 1000m
8 Royal Invader (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) looks wound up for her debut. Maher/Eustace trained filly that spanked them in a recent Stawell jumpout, leading throughout under Jamie Kah it appeared to be, and the filly gave nothing else a look in. Has the early pace to be near the speed and is hard to beat I’d suggest.
5 Hell Hound (Bet Now: $2.30 TOP ODDS) commands respect. Hellbent filly that debuted on Terang Cup Day and was an impressive winner, producing the best 400m-200m and the best last 200m of the meeting, a good sign for a juvenile on debut. I think this is a winnable metro race, so she’s right in the mix.
4 Zouthur (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) is a Zoistar colt for the Maher/Eustace camp that is on debut. Jumpouts have been solid without jumping up and down about them, but is bred to handle wet ground and this stable is having quite a run with their debut/first up runners. He’s a knockout chance.
Race 2. (12:45) Tobin Bro. Celeb. Lives (Bm78) 2400m
9 Witchatar Star (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) should love getting back to a bigger track, especially this track, where he was dominant two back. He then went to Caulfield and he ran well, but the tighter track wasn’t to his liking I felt. Back at Sandown, more spacious surroundings, he can bounce back into the winners list.
8 Oh So Far (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is a Mick Kent mare that is racing in good form. Luckless two back at Sandown before going to Flemington where I just think the hard 2500m found her out late when a close up fourth to Blandford Lad. Hopefully the tempo won’t be as hot this time around and she can use her turn of foot.
10 Eaton (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS) lacks the class of some of these, but is an honest stayer that will try hard from near the speed. Ran over 2400m at Geelong last Tuesday when racing on a bottomless track but battled away really well when second to Boyszee. Down in the weights, he’s a first four threat.
Race 3. (13:20) Ladbroke It (Bm70) 1300m
12 Skywolf (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) has come back in super order. Team Hawkes trained gelding that resumed over 1200m under the lights at Pakenham where he led throughout and was quite dominant late in dashing clear. He’s come back a better horse and from the inside gate, he’ll do me.
1 Jucconi (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) is a promising animal for Team McEvoy that should prove hard to beat. Big win from him at The Valley last time out, overcoming some form of inside bias to win and win impressively. He tends to race well on the fresh side and was scratched from Flemington on Monday to be saved for this.
5 D’Jumbuck (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is flying for Brian McGrath and up to 1300m should be fine for him. Last couple of runs have come over 1200m on the Lakeside track here, running second to Rockribbed two back before getting the sweet sit behind the speed last start and finishing best to wear down Fiery Red. Hard to knock the way he’s racing.
Race 4. (13:55) Ladbrokes Split Multis (Bm78) 1300m
6 La Vina (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is a quality mare for Lindsey Smith that I think can be dangerous first up. She’s a bomb mare when produced fresh and I was quite taken by a recent trial win from her at Colac. She has been accepted/scratched a few times, but given Warrnambool is close, the stable is firing, so I’ll take a punt with her.
10 Succeed Indeed (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) has an awful winning strike rate but I think she isn’t far off a win. Lost sight of the bunny two back in a total forgive behind Vasmee. She then raced against the Mares and warmed to the task okay at the end behind Our Birdsong. Best is certainly good enough.
5 Saigon (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) is a Chris Waller trained mare that is first up and I think she can be dangerous fresh. Four run Summer/Autumn prep, and while she didn’t win, she ran some good races behind some talented types. She sprints well fresh and stable is starting to find form again.
Race 5. (14:30) Senet Gambling Law Exp. (Bm70) 1300m
8 California Surreal (Bet Now: $6.00) each way for me. Team Snowden trained filly that comes to Melbourne looking for dry ground after racing on Sydneyt bogs her past couple, the latest at Canterbury on a Heavy259. Back on firmer footing from a soft gate, I think she’ll prove to be a leading chance.
10 Jayanthi (Bet Now: $5.50) has good upside to come and has the Maher/Eustace polish. Both career outings have come at Ballarat, debuting with a second over 1100m before a dominant win over 1200m, overcoming a slow tempo to win well, looking like she will appreicate further, which she gets here.
1 Literary Magnate (Bet Now: $6.50) has class and class will take her a long way. Has been kept on ice, having not raced since the Thousand Guineas when fourth to Yearning, running a massive race at a big price. Wet ground no issue for her and even allowing for 61kg, she commands respect.
Race 6. (15:10) "Boxing Challenge" 14/5 (Bm84) 1000m
10 Starry Legend (Bet Now: $3.70) is an enigma, and that is an understatement. He clearly has the engine under the hood to be a handy horse but he has a couple of versions. He can look brilliant one start and then ordinary next start. Gelded prior to resuming at Mornington where he was smashed in betting but found little in the straight I thought behind Forever Free. His best sees him win.
7 Sacred Palace (Bet Now: $3.00) has the Lindsey Smith polish and the stable is humming with Warrnambool next week. Loved the way he let down to win on Terang Cup Day. The race was there to be won and that he did, surging hard late to get the job done. Wet ground no issue and smaller field helps his cause.
5 Fine Dane (Bet Now: $7.50) is getting on in years for John Moloney but he still maintains a healthy zest for racing. Sat near the speed at Bendigo a few weeks ago and he fought on pretty well. Just no match late for the impressive Colesridge. Hasn’t won in a long time but will give a good sight.
Race 7. (15:50) Tile Importer Hcp 1600m
12 Tahlequah (Bet Now: $5.00) is a promising animal. Price/Kent trained three year old that has had two career outings, both at Pakenham. Good second on debut before looking a good thing on paper and duly saluting at a short quote. The rise to the mile looks ideal, in a good camp and has good upside left.
2 Belle Savoir (Bet Now: $2.80) deserves another chance. Impressive win fresh at Sandown despite being unwanted in betting. She was then hard in the market when racing a few weeks back at Caulfield and for mine, she just looked lost around Caulfield but was okay late when fourth to Adele Amour. Now has that run under the belt, she’ll be better for it and can bounce back on a bigger track.
9 Flash Feeling (Bet Now: $4.80) is a horse with some promise for John Sadler. Led and battled away well two back at Sandown behind a promising horse in Detonator Jack before going to Caulfield when ridden with a sit and worked home strongly when a narrow second to Son Of Emperor. He commands respect.
Race 8. (16:25) Anniversary Vase 1400m
1 Buffalo River (Bet Now: $3.20) is an enigma, but you can’t ignore anything the Michael Moroney camp is saddling up at the moment. He is first up here, having not raced since the Cranbourne Cup when leading and struggling on the Heavy 156 behind King Magnus. Good fresh record and his jumpouts have been strong.
5 Regardsmaree (Bet Now: $2.40) is on the seven day back up for Nick Ryan after winning the VOBIS Sprint last Saturday at Caulfield, knucking down strongly from off the speed to nab them on the peg in a very good performance. Back up no issue and the wet ground is no issue.
12 Beaufort Park (Bet Now: $16.00) is sneaky flying. Just staying at the mile is the knock with him. But he was luckless last Saturday at Caulfield, having plenty to offer but didn’t have much room to let down. If this was a 78 over the mile, I’d be keen to back each way. Instead, one for exotics.
Race 9. (16:55) Thoroughbred Club (bm78) 1600m
7 Born A King (Bet Now: $14.00) should appreciate a rise in trip for Chris Waller. Resumed over 1500m at Hawkesbury at the midweeks where he was run off his legs early and chasing. Never really a winning threat, but liked the way he finished his race off behind Kalapour, a horse I have time for. That reads well for this and up to 1600m is a big tick.
8 Basarwa (Bet Now: $8.50) is racing really well this time in for Michael Moroney. Solid fourth two back at Flemington behind Yonce. He then went to Mornington last time out and worked to the line quite well from off the speed when second to It’s Tornado Storm. If he can sit a pair or two closer in the run, he’ll take beating.
4 Kinane (Bet Now: $14.00) is three weeks between runs for Mick Kent since resuming over 1400m at Caulfield where he was snagged back to near last in the run and I thought his finale was very good from a bad spot behind Paperboy. Hasn’t done a great deal since his 3YO season but his resumption was encouraging.
