The iconic two day Wagga Cup Carnival begins on Thursday with an eight race card, headlined by the Wagga Town Plate (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Back Me

I think the near double figures for 3 Mr Moppet (Bet Now: $5.50) is more than acceptable here so happy to be in his corner in the opener. Not sure he beat a great deal last time out at Orange but what I liked was the manner in which he put them away and his time was very good relative to the meeting, only 1.5L off Golden Tycoon, a very well performed city class horse. Has gate one, so he gets every chance to run 1200m.

Danger

8 Lion’s Roar (Bet Now: $3.30) is a son of Contributor on debut for the John O’Shea team. This gelding was given a good hitout in a Randwick trial last week, closing off to run second to an above average juvenile in Wild Ruler. Don’t think fitness will be an issue for the debut, he finds a winnable race and stable wouldn’t travel them to Wagga for nothing.

Long Shot

9 More To See (Bet Now: $7.50) is having start one here for Joseph/Jones stable and I think he commands respect here. Trialled last week at Canberra and under light riding, closed off really nicely to run a narrow second. Tricky draw to overcome, but stable has been flying when sending runners to this track and Brodie Loy is one of the more in form riders in this area at the moment.

A potential wet track does worry me with 8 Queen Street Boss (Bet Now: $27.00), but she’s just silly odds at nearly $30 so I’ll be in her corner. She was one of the eye catchers of the meeting here last time out, ducking and weaving before coming wider and she let down strongly late to run third. If Heagney can take advantage of gate one, think she only runs well and 1×3 at the big odds is the play. The only query is wet ground because her two best runs have been on firmer footing.

Danger

Market will be the guide with 3 Royal Fighter (Bet Now: $4.00), having his first run for Trevor Sutherland. Has only had one career outing, which came at the Gold Coast when trained by Chris Waller and he didn’t do a great deal. First up on a big day at the home track, you would assume he’s ready to go, but market will tell you that.

Long Shot

5 Ivy’s Belle (Bet Now: $14.00) is a John Taylor trained that should appreciate the rise to 1400m after racing over 1200m here last time out when back off the speed before getting clear air late and finding the line well behind impressive winner Shelby Sixtysix. Second in that race was Just Business, who is around $4 here while Ivy’s Belle, third, is $14/thereabouts and gets a 2kg weight swing for a 1.67L margin, so for me, the price gap is far too great.

Race 3. (13:50) Daily Advertiser Hcp (66) 2000m

Think this is a case of get the dartboard out and hope for the best, but in saying that, the value in the race is clearly the local hope 2 Willy White Socks (Bet Now: $18.00). Looked like it was a barrier trial for him first up at Gundagai over 1180m before going straight to 1800m here in the Cup Prelude and gee he was good from the back behind The Doctor’s Son. He handles wet ground, got upside, 2000m no issue…why is he nearly $20?

Danger

A key chance here is 4 She’s A Treasure (Bet Now: $4.80), who does appear to have more scope than most given this will be just her third run for Matty Dale after formerly being trained by the Maher/Eustace team. Latest run came over the mile at Goulburn when on speed and battling away well when second to Apicius. Looks ready for the step up in trip so giving her respect.

Long Shot

The best version of 1 Ocean Walzer (Bet Now: $15.00) would be right in this and almost be a good thing. He’s had a few homes since arriving in Australia and for the most part has been very disappointing, with his last effort being down the track in a Picnic race at Forbes. He is a stayer though out to a more ideal trip, so a chance to improve, but this race is a tad thin now are scratchings.

Race 4. (14:25) Riverina Motor Group Mdn Hcp 1000m

No surprise there has been early support for 6 Jac The Great (Bet Now: $6.50), a daughter of Sidestep on debut for Matty Dale. She trialled back on April 3 at Canberra and was a bit raw/new but once she switched on late, she moved like a nice horse with something up the sleeve. For me, the favourite is too short, so looking for value and this girl is it.

Danger

2 Openhimup (Bet Now: $3.80) is a son of Moshe resuming for the Peter Maher stable. Hasn’t been sighted since racing at Wodonga back in November when down the track in a maiden behind La Zola in a race where the form hasn’t been great so that’s a query here, but the two runs prior were both quite strong and on breeding should be okay on wet ground.

Long Shot

Interesting that David Pfieffer had the fav here, but has scratched it and will have just the one rep in 5 Deep Love (Bet Now: $21.00), a Deep Field filly on debut. Hasn’t set the world on fire in the trials, but is bred to swim and there has been early market support. All depends if the inside will be fine given she has gate one and sometimes away from the fence at Wagga when wet is the spot to be.

Race 5. (15:05) Bendigo Bank Hcp (66) 1600m

8 Jungle Book (Bet Now: $6.00) is on his home deck and gets a wet track so I’ll lean his way. Was trying to force himself into the Wagga Cup picture but was outclassed in the Prelude behind The Doctor’s Son but in saying that was wide no cover throughout. This looks more his level, he’s tough, hard fit and loves a track with give in it.

Danger

Back in grade and back to the mile are two big ticks for 2 Yousay Bolt (Bet Now: $3.00). Was tried to be a potential Wagga Cup candidate hence why they went to the Prelude over 1800m here, and while he ran well, he didn’t attack the line strongly enough to warrant going there, so back to the mile and with the claim from the inside draw, he’s very likeable.

Long Shot

4 My Blue Jeans (Bet Now: $5.00) is likeable here with the claim and with strong wet track credentials. Didn’t need the wet track to bolt up last time out at Goulburn in impressive fashion over 1400m. He’s a winner at the mile so that should be no issue, he’s a swimmer and with the 4kg claim, he does look to get in very well.

Race 6. (15:45) Harrisons Joinery Hcp (C2) 1400m

6 Noble Belle (Bet Now: $4,60) for me in what does look a race in two now. Was heavily backed when resuming at Nowra and under hard riding from Brock Ryan, she really knuckled down late to get up and score, landing some nice bets. The knock is that she does seem a fresh horse only, but to counter that, her wet track form does read well.

Danger

2 Jodhpur (Bet Now: $2.40) has his share of talent, but he’s fast becoming a bookies favourite. Has started hard in the market in all four runs this time in and has let the punters down each time, the latest over 1200m here when coming back from 2000m and did a good job to run second. Suited up to 1400m, runs well again…could you back him to win with confidence though?

Long Shot

11 Tycoon Dreaming (Bet Now: $10.00) rises a fair bit in depth but he’s hard fit, racing well and has a heavy track win next to his name. His recent runs have come at Non Tab meetings so hard to get a real guide but three back at Albury he gave them a spanking on a Heavy 10 so at least he’s had had recent heavy track experience.

Race 7. (16:20) Wagga Town Plate 1200m

3 Southern Lad (Bet Now: $4.20) looks to be the safe option in a very wide edition of the Town Plate. Quality sprinter for John O’Shea that is first up here, having not raced since the Carrington Stakes back on January 25 over 1400m at Randwick when fourth to Cradle Mountain in an on pace dominated affair. He’s a horse who flies fresh and his trials leading in indicate he’s ready to go.

Danger

2 Ashlor (Bet Now: $12.00) is a marvel for Dan McCarthy. Narrow second to Diamond Effort two back before going to the VOBIS Sprint where he sat outside Pippie on speed and considering there was a 400m section of the race she ran sub 21, he did an enormous job to stick on like he did. He’s an old warrior that loves a fight and has to be respected.

Long Shot

14 Viceroy (Bet Now: $41.00) is better suited on dry ground, but his heavy track stats aren’t too bad. Comes through the Town Plate Prelude where he ran well but still had his chance to get the job done when third. Last heavy track, run, he was good late behind Southern Lad at Randwick so $41+ for him does look a bit of value.

Race 8. (16:55) Navigate Advisors Plate (C1/Mdn) 1600m

Back Me

1 Ilvermorny (Bet Now: $12.00) in the get out. Was on him at odds last start at Kembla when he raced on speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite see it through when fourth to Tampering, who came out and won on Tuesday, so the form reads okay for this, he gets the Blinkers back on and from the wide gate, has plenty of time to come over.

Danger

5 Your Knuckleship (Bet Now: $9.50) is a lightly raced seven year old for Keith Dryden that’s racing really well at the moment without winning. Looked like the win would come at this track/distance last start in an identical race and looked the winner but was worried out of it near the peg by Flight Commander. His lone win came on wet ground, so with that in mind, hard to beat here.

Long Shot

10 Mahsinger (Bet Now: $16.00) looks ready for the mile. Was good late fresh over 1200m here behind Cyborg, who is flying. Then went to 1300m and worked home okay late behind Away She Goes. Was good over the mile here last prep behind Defy, a handy galloper, so if she can bring that form here, she’s certainly in the mix.
