30/3/2019 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Doomben

A bumper ten race card has been assembled for Doomben this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out a metre for the entire circuit.

1 Lord Barrington (Bet Now: $15.00) is crying out for a rain affected track and he potentially gets that here. He comes through the Crusher race at Eagle Farm from three weeks ago where he was a little unlucky not to finish closer but was okay in defeat behind the Currie mare. His best chances will come if the track is genuinely wet, because that’s when he showed his best when trained by Michael Moroney.

11 Bella Occhi (Bet Now: $2.40) is a well bred mare for Ben Currie that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since October 20 over 1200m here when on speed and tiring badly late but was found to have been galloped on in a clear forgive/excuse. Been given a good break and looked to trial up really well last week at Toowoomba. Market will be the guide, but in recent weeks, the stable has had them firing first up.

12 Sundarbans (Bet Now: $6.00) is the obvious unknown. Former Hawkes trained filly making her Queensland debut for Tony Gollan after a couple of inglorious runs to start the prep in Sydney. Now with Gollan, she trialled up pretty well on Tuesday here in okay time. The query is how will she handle the wet ground, because on breeding, I’d say no, but did trial well on a Soft5 at the start of the prep.

Interesting placement from Wendy Roche with 3 Galaxy (Bet Now: $14.00), who comes to Queensland after a flop at Newcastle but did have cardiac arrhythmia, so clear excuses. Has trialled well since and with the scratchings, I think he can get over on speed comfortably and at his best, he’s certainly up to beating these. Just want to see what the market does with him.

2 Miss Cavallo (Bet Now: $2.20) is the most obvious. Mick Nolan trains this filly, who ran in the 2YO Jewel at the Gold Coast where she got back and made up really good ground late to run second to The Odyssey. No horse of that quality lining up here so if she’s recovered from that hard run, clearly the horse to beat. Do I want to take short odds about her? Probably not.

12 Rock Tour (Bet Now: $31.00) is a Kristy Best trained filly who was completely unwanted in betting when debuting over 1000m at the Sunny Coast but despite having no friends in the market, I thought the run was quite good in defeat when off the pace and making ground to run third. On breeding, a track with give in it should be fine, soft draw and up to 1200m a tick.

Think 1 Eminent (Bet Now: $6.00) can bounce back here. Resumed with a very sharp win over 1350m here before stepping up to the mile at Eagle Farm where he had a touch of the second up syndrome I think behind the in form Get Stuck In. Third up bounce back is on the cards for sure and does have a good record at Doomben. Tricky race, several chances, but leaning his way.

4 Le Juge (Bet Now: $4.00) has been up a little while for Chris Waller but continues to race quite well. He hasn’t raced since Feb 23 when racing a solid third to Reckless Choice over the mile at Eagle Farm. The break between runs is the little niggle with him, but in the right stable and has a really god record at Doomben and if he’s ready fitness wise, he’ll take some beating.

5 Mazaz (Bet Now: $7.50) is a Chris Waller trained stayer that resumes. He hasn’t raced since January 12 at Randwick when scoring a pretty solid win over 2400m in what turned out to be a real slog to the line. Resumes without a trial, but Lloyd booked isn’t the worst of leads, can run well fresh and 1600m first up tells me he’s forward enough to run a positive race.

Bit of a nothing race but think 9 Seento (Bet Now: $6.50) is the way to go. Toby Edmonds trains this stayer, who ran on the bog at the Gold Coast two weeks ago where he got too far back in the run and copped a few checks but finished off well late behind See The Master. Think up to 2200m will be fine for him and if the rain does come, based on last start, a track with genuine give is no issue.

8 Takarakka (Bet Now: $11.00) has done a ripping job this time in for the Aidan St Vincent stable. Ran over the 2040m here at the midweeks on March 6 where he proved far too good for his rivals, aided by a lovely steer from Jimmy Orman. Been kept on ice since then and the tick over trial at Port Macquarie looked more than encouraging to the eye. Think he’ll go close.

10 Spanish Hurricane (Bet Now: $8.00) is a progressive son of Lope De Vega for the Matty Dunn stable who is starting to put it together now. Dominant win two back over 1900m at Ballina before going to Grafton a couple of Sundays back where he was given every chance but couldn’t quite get the job done when a narrow second to stablemate Glamorous Miss. Was coming back up in trip so up to 2200m, he appeals.

He’s a very likeable conveyance is 9 Tonsor (Bet Now: $2.00) and I think he’s the way to go. He has won his past two, the win two back coming under the lights at Canterbury before going to Warwick Farm when toughing it out strongly on the wet track to get the job done. Likely lands in front from the barrier, Fradd aboard, tough, has sustained speed…keen on his chances.

5 Tawfiq Boy (Bet Now: $4.80) has got his hoof on the til to win. Just not sure he beats Tonsor but he should get a good run off the speed, which is what he got last time over 1200m last Saturday at Eagle Farm and he found the line well in fourth. Out to 1350m should suit and the big tick is a track with give in it, something he does excel on. Definite threat to the fav.

Very interesting runner is 3 The Chairman (Bet Now: $14.00), a former Mick Price galloper that is having his first run for the Michael Costa stable. Hasn’t raced since May 19 at Flemington when down the track behind Moss ‘N’ Dale and has now switched stables. Can sprint well fresh, stack of gear changes applied and the two trials leading in have been encouraging to the eye.

Tough race. I think noted first up performer 8 Karakabeel (Bet Now: $5.00) can continue his really good fresh record, where he has won three of his five first up attempts. Hasn’t raced in a year since contesting a race at this track/distance when down the track. Has had two trials in readiness for his return, and did look sharp in a trial here on Tuesday morning. Keen to see what he does.

I reckon back to Doomben can see a form reversal in the shape of 9 Pressway (Bet Now: $9.00), who has had three runs back from a spell at Eagle Farm where he has run well without really threatening, the latest over 1200m behind Capital Connection. He should be at peak fitness now and his Doomben record/form does read well. Happy to give him one more chance.

3 Hectopascal (Bet Now: $18.00) could be an improver. Former Weir mare that had her first run for Tony Gollan three weeks ago at Eagle Farm where she went far too keen in the run, sitting wide no cover on speed, and tiring late behind the in form Manaya. Can go well second up and with better racing manners, an improved showing wouldn’t totally surprise. One for exotics.

9 Millard Reaction (Bet Now: $3.10) is a well bred son of Fastnet Rock for Toby Edmonds who debuted over the 1110m here on March 13 where he was somewhat unwanted in betting but despite having no friends in the market, he absolutely bolted in and ran okay time relative to the day. Off that, 1350m should be fine for him and stable is having a good run at the moment.

8 Trail Of Glory (Bet Now: $14.00) on top for me. Three weeks between runs when contesting the 3YO Jewel last Saturday where she just got run off her legs, being a mile out of her ground and was never in the hunt in a somewhat forgive run behind Mishani Hustler. Think up to 1350m will really suit her and backing up a week later is usually a good lead the horse has come through the run well.

10 Too Hot To Hold (Bet Now: $26.00) is a Steve O’Dea trained filly who ran here last Wednesday over the track/distance where she produced a decent turn of foot from off the pace and surged hard late to get the job done. She can be a bit hit and miss at times, but when she’s on, she’s Saturday class for sure and overall, this race doesn’t have great depth to it IMO.

Hoping there is method in the madness when tipping 4 River Racer (Bet Now: $4.00). Hasn’t won in nearly a year I know, but this mare, trained by Les Ross, has run some ripping races at a high level. Was okay last time at Eagle Farm behind Scallopini and the recent trial was good. Has been accepted/scratched a few times since, but the talent under the hood is there. Hoping she showcases it here.

5 The Avenger (Bet Now: $14.00) is an interesting runner. Chris Waller trains this bloke, who contests one of the easier races he has contested in some time. He ran over the Randwick mile over a month ago where he was a bit disappointing I thought behind Penske, but he was wide throughout so a tiny forgive. His couple of runs prior to that were very good and he can win this with his best.

1 All Summer Long (Bet Now: $12.00) looks a knockout chance. Dumped Lloyd first up before racing over 1300m at the Gold Coast where he was specked at odds and under Ryan Plumb, he absolutely bolted in and won by a space, with a bit in hand. Once upon a time, this was regarded as a Stakes class horse by Greg Bennett, so has always had the talent. Hopefully now he can fulfill it.

Tricky race for the females but think a relatively safe option here is the Tony Gollan trained 5 Splitter (Bet Now: $5.00). Has had two runs back from a spell, winning first up at the Gold Coast midweeks before going to Eagle Farm where she was near the speed and battled away well behind a good one in Manaya. That form does read quite well for this and should take some beating.

13 Mialign (Bet Now: $5.50) is a very interesting runner. Formerly raced in Victoria but is now in Queensland under the care of Chris Meagher. She’s a bomb when produced fresh, as we saw last prep, and she looked very sharp in a trial win here on Tuesday morning. Tricky draw, but has the speed to overcome that and if that eventuates, she should prove hard to run down.

9 Felino Bel (Bet Now: $14.00) is a daughter of Bel Esprit for the Guy camp that resumed here on March 13 where she got slightly held up in the straight when having something to offer but got clear late and ran on okay behind Happy Hooves. Did trial well prior to that and despite facing tougher opposition here, she looks to have come back well and could add value to exotics.

Keen to see how 13 Buck Bay (Bet Now: $5.50) goes. Former Darren Weir galloper that had his first run for Toby Edmonds here at the midweeks a couple of Wednesdays back where he was ridden upside down due to the gate. They pressed forward, led and proved too good in a race which had a little bit of depth to it. He was more effective when ridden with cover and saved for the straight. If that can eventuate here, he’ll take some beating.

Keen to see 10 Totally Charmed (Bet Now: $3.90) for an in form Steve O’Dea stable. Had trialled up well prior to resuming over 1000m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago where he was given a nice run in transit but the tempo wasn’t as hot as you’d expect for the sprint contest and couldn’t dash when second to Crusher, but the effort was still a beauty. Fitter and onto a track with potential give, he has to be a winning chance.

12 New Horizons (Bet Now: $10.00) is a talented son of Frankel for Chris Meagher that resumes. This bloke hasn’t raced since December 15 over 1350m here when on speed and fighting on strongly to run second to Auerbach. He is a good fresh performer, track with give would be no issue even though he’s better on top of the ground and does have the right racing pattern.
