Nine races will be run and won at Morphettville on Tuesday. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out four metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; True for the remainder.
Melbourne Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Melbourne Cup
Race 1. (12:11) FURPHY MDN PLATE 1600m
Looks a race in two start the meeting. His racing pattern isn’t ideal, but I’ve loved the way 1 Cashin’ Chex (Bet Now: $2.80) has returned this prep. Was a real eye catcher first up over 1200m here behind Deep Speed, who bolted up on Friday night at the Valley to frank the form. Cashin’ Chex then stepped up to 1400m in a 58 race and again was back near last but finished off with real purpose behind You Hadme At Hello. If he can sit a touch closer in the run, think he’s too good.
If it’s an on pace dominated race, then 5 Noname Lane (Bet Now: $2.15) becomes the one to beat. Will Clarken trained gelding that resumed over 1200m here when on speed and tried hard, but was clearly no match for Star Of Uma, finishing second but did beat the rest by a couple of lengths. Star Of Uma won on Saturday, so that form reads well, and a tick over trial win last week was sharp.
8 Chrysos (Bet Now: $21.00) is an improver here at odds. Team McEvoy trained three year old that debuted over 1400m on Murray Bridge Cup Day. He was back near last in the run and didn’t really fire a shot. With this stable, they rarely put in two howlers on the bounce, and Vorster is back on, so think he’s the one that is value.
Race 2. (12:51) FLEURIEU MILK COMPANY MDN 1050m
Market will be the guide here, but any hint of support for 12 Rocabella (Bet Now: $2.40) and I’ll be latching on. Daughter of Nicconi who resumes for the McEvoy camp, having not raced since her debut in the Magic Millions on Adelaide Cup Day where she was part of a hot speed battle and she just tired late. Been given a good break. The jumpout was interesting because she wasn’t extended and was pretty much last and towards the outside fence most of the way hence why I think the market will tell you if she’s ready or not.
5 Sea Witness (Bet Now: $5.00) brings the Victorian provincial form, which should hold him in good stead against these. Solid third two back at Moe before going to Pakenham where he was back near last in the run and worked home strongly, just missing out on picking up Jungle Sensation. Tricky gate, but the form reads okay.
9 Free Of Sin (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Keep The Faith filly for Chris Bieg that is on debut. This girl has only had the one public trial to get ready for her first start, which came last week on the Parks track here, running last. Wasn’t really asked for an effort, and she’s bred to be a handy one, so watch the market with her as well.
Race 3. (13:31) TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY MDN PLATE 1200m
I think if 6 Beau Rossa (Bet Now: $4.50) can get on the back of the McEvoy runner, he’ll take some beating. Will Clarken trains this gelding, who resumed over 1000m on the Parks track where he was five wide for the trip, so that didn’t help, and he bumped into a Stakes class filly in Amari, so that form reads so well, and the tick over trial looked impressive to the eye. Tricky gate, but hopefully follows the right horse and finishes best.
10 Nicconi Express (Bet Now: $1.60) will go around as favourite given the McEvoy/Vorster factor. Heavily backed when debuting over 900m at Murray Bridge. Just got a touch wide for the trip and tried hard, but couldn’t quite get the win when second to Dantree. Has a tricky gate but hard to ignore how well the stable/jock combo is going.
14 Shadow Boom (Bet Now: $9.50) remains at 1200m for Phillip Stokes. I reckon 1400m would be ideal for her but she draws soft and won’t be far away. Ran over this track/distance last time out and while she was never really a winning threat, liked the way she found the line in defeat behind Star Of Uma, who won on Saturday to tick the form off. Outside winning chance if the first two are off their game.
Race 4. (14:15) TAB CREATE SPRING CALENDAR-C1 1100m
7 Lorne (Bet Now: $2.00) is short enough but I think she’s too good for these. Team McEvoy trained mare that looked a good thing when she resumed at Strathalbyn and despite sitting wide no cover for the trip, she was far too good for them. That was five weeks ago and not a winner has come out of it, which is a concern somewhat, but she looks talented and finds a winnable Class 1.
3 Salome (Bet Now: $6.00) can bounce back. Had her first run for Will Clarken on the course proper here a few weeks ago and she tried hard, but was weak in her finale behind Party Hack. Think she’ll come on from that and she showed when trained in Victoria that she’s capable of being a city class horse, so giving her respect here.
9 Mavette (Bet Now: $21.00) is a son of Al Maher for John Hickmott that resumes. This four year old hasn’t raced since July 29 when down the track at Balaklava behind Pivotal Force, who has since established himself as a Saturday class horse, so think that form reads okay for this. No jumpout I could find, so a bit of guessing, but one for exotics.
Race 5. (15:30) PORSCHE CENTRE ADELAIDE (BM62) 1800m
7 Meehni (Bet Now: $1.85) is a Team McEvoy mare that comes through the Extreme Thrill race from a few weeks back on the Parks track. Vorster put her into a lovely spot just off the speed and she tried hard. Just didn’t have the change up speed to go with them when fourth. She’s going well and is clearly the one to beat in a thin race.
4 Getouttheway (Bet Now: $5.50) is a son of Floral Pegasus for Sue Nolan that should be okay up to 1800m after racing over at Gawler on their Cup Day and did try hard from just off the speed, but seemed to have his chance when third to Meadows Young Buck. Tricky draw to overcome, but is racing well and should be thereabouts.
6 Meadows Young (Bet Now: $7.00) Buck has the right racing pattern to give this a big shake. Led throughout over 1700m on Gawler Cup Day to get the job done and fend off a city class horse in Rapid Raiser. Has won at 1800m, so the rise in trip should be no issue and if he can find the front, get control, he’ll take some beating.
Race 6. (16:11) AAMI (BM62) 1100m
6 Celine (Bet Now: $4.50) will need luck from the gate, but I feel she is the best horse in the race, and looks to have jumped out well. Resumes for the Jolly camp after pulling not 100% back in June on the Parks track behind Lombardo. Two jumpouts have been very encouraging…if she can get luck from the gate, think she’s the one.
5 After You (Bet Now: $5.50) does look the map horse. Matty Seyers trained mare that has done little wrong in two career outings, both at Gawler. Debuted with an on speed third to Kumo Sun before getting the job done on Gawler Cup Day, sitting near the pace and proving too good. Harder here, but has the right racing pattern.
Think back onto a firmer deck will help the cause of 11 Ambertone (Bet Now: $26.00). Hasn’t set the world on fire in recent outings, but they have been on wet ground, and she’s a mare more effective on top of the ground. She’ll do no work from the gate and I think is certainly worth including in wider exotics and multiples.
Race 7. (16:51) ZILZIE WINES (BM62) 1200m
Staying at 1200m is the knock with 7 Motell (Bet Now: $3.60), but the Blinkers back on may counter for that. Resumed over 1200m on the Parks track and I thought at the top of the straight, she presented to win. Just couldn’t finish it off. Would love a rise in trip for her, but I think Blinkers back on will sharpen her up.
4 Cotillion (Bet Now: $5.00) drops a fair bit in overall grade/depth after resuming over 1250m on the Parks track against the Mares where she was back on the fence and didn’t fire a shot behind Trip, who won a week later to frank the form, but it was a meeting where those on speed were advantaged. Tricky draw, but hard to beat.
1 Rubble (Bet Now: $13.00) is a very interesting runner. Formerly with Cody Morgan but finds himself in SA under the care of Karen Byrnes, and she’s a trainer who does a great job with cast offs. This bloke did show some promise when in NSW, but did let punters down on a number of occasions. Recent trial was solid enough, and I think is a market watch.
Race 8. (17:31) TERRY HOWE PRINTING (BM80) 2500m
Going each way with the lightly raced 7 Karpool Khan (Bet Now: $8.50) for the Kylie Huxtable team. Backed as if unbeatable when racing in a Class 1/Maiden at Murray Bridge over 2000m and he showed good ticker late to fend off Pay The Man and win, with an eight length gap to the rest. He gets down to 51kg after the claim and 2500m should be fine.
3 Darlamax (Bet Now: $3.60) deserves a crack at this kind of race. Andrew Homann has done a fabulous job with this guy, winning three on end, the latest a strong all the way winner over 2000m here two weeks ago when leading under a lovely front running steer from Stubby. Clearly a harder assignment here, but he’s earned a crack.
6 Hasta La Fiorente (Bet Now: $11.00) looks like he has been set for the race. Close up third at this track/distance two back before having five weeks off, coming back to 2000m at Naracoorte and worked home very strongly when second to Sebonna. He’ll have no issue with 2500m. The question will be can he relax in the run?
Race 9. (18:07) WESLO SECURITY (BM54) 1050m
Found this race impossible. I’ll have a throw at the stumps at big odds with 10 Good Luck Chuck (Bet Now: $21.00). Admittedly, he hasn’t done much in two runs back from a break, but he gets Blinkers back on and a fast pace to sit off and launch late. The majority of these are bludgers, including this guy, but he’s the one that’ll be at big odds and don’t need to have a large amount on for a potential big collect.
6 Pale Ale (Bet Now: $4.00) is racing so well at the moment for Danielle Wilson. Impressive winner two back at Oakbank before going to Murray Bridge when wide on speed and just couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Twice Forgotten. Gets a lovely run from the draw and he does seem to have found his niche at this level.
8 Woulda Thought (Bet Now: $10.00) So can be a sleeper here at odds. I gave him a knockout chance on the Parks track a few weeks ago but he was one of many that had no chance the way the track played. Back near last and just had no hope of making up the required ground. He’s better than that, so give him another chance.
