The Ascot Carnival continues on Tuesday with a ten race card, headlined by the Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (7) and the rail is out fourteen metres for the entire circuit.
Melbourne Cup π: View the Field and Odds for the Melbourne Cup
Race 1. (14:33) Run And Eat A Kebab (rs0ly) 1000m
1 Acromantula (Bet Now:Β $2.20) looks a really nice mover for the Pearce camp and I think he can make this a winning debut. Has had three preps without racing, trialling in January, then in June. He was spelled once again and trialled at Lark Hill a couple of weeks back when leading throughout and he looked to move very well. Holds up from gate one and should take some beating.
4 Giancana (Bet Now:Β $4.00) is a Simon Miller trained filly that had trialled up well enough prior to debuting over 1000m at Northam where she was absolutely crunched in betting, expected to produce a winning debut and that she did, drawing clear late from off the pace and running good late splits. Above average and should measure up here comfortably.
Fresh legs and back in depth I do like for 2 Just A Pinch (Bet Now:Β $7.00). Team Casey trained filly that ran third to Madam Torio before racing at Belmont and she was disappointing behind Brooklyn Pier. That form reads pretty well for a race like this, so I’d watch the market with her and see what it does with this filly.
Race 2. (15:44) Amelia Park Mdn 1200m
Bob Peters and Team Williams will win the race. Just a matter of deciding which one. Off the trials and rider bookings, I’m with 9 Fashion Queen (Bet Now:Β $3.20), a daughter of Al Maher that is on debut. She’s had two trials this prep to get ready for start one, the latest seeing her win at Lark Hill. Nothing special about the time, but loved the way she went and from the gate, Parnham has all the options in the world.
10 Treasured Prize (Bet Now:Β $4.50) is a stablemate of Fashion Queen that is also on debut. This girl is a daughter of Pierro. Also has had two trials to get ready for her first start and off the trials, while she looks to have quality, I think she’ll be better suited over a bit further, so that’s my query, but class could well get her home.
7 Jedi Mind (Bet Now:Β $3.10) is a son of My Admiration that debuts for the Brett Pope. He has had a little time off since his trials, which came in late September. Looked sharp each time, but the break between trial and raceday does have me a tad concerned. But, the two things going for him after gate one and Jade McNaught in the saddle.
Race 3. (16:28) Mrs Mac's Mdn 1200m
I’m with 10 Testing Love (Bet Now:Β $2.60). Team Williams trained first starter by Iffraaj that has had a couple of trials to get ready, the latest over 950m at Lark Hill when looking to move quite well I thought on speed. Pushed out, but won like a nice horse. Tricky gate to overcome, but think she’s handy and should take some beating.
3 I Hope You Dance (Bet Now:Β $7.00) has had a few chances to break the maiden tag but is honest and should be thereabouts. She resumes for Brett Pope, having not raced since May 23 when a solid fourth over the mile at Belmont behind Hip Wiggle. Thought the Lark Hill trial was solid enough, draws well and gets the 3kg claim.
6 Lasting Impact (Bet Now:Β $14.00) is a daughter of Real Impact that gets Blinkers first time, so think she can be a big improver here. Sat on speed over 1000m at Northam last time out and just felt the pinch late behind Fish Hook. Think the Blinkers will sharpen her right up and despite drawing wide, has enough early toe to get across.
Race 4. (17:04) Crown Perth Hcp (c3) 1800m
6 Lord Lonsdale (Bet Now:Β $3.40) looks the pony to bet on. Kieran McDonagh trains this gelding, who resumed over 1400m here around three weeks ago when heavily backed and under a confident front running steer from McNaught, the four year old bolted up and was much too good. Tricky gate, but should find the front and prove hard to get past.
I’ve got some time for 5 Hip Wiggle (Bet Now:Β $3.60). Daughter of Universal Ruler for Dan Morton that comes here in winning after a strong effort to get the job done over the mile, sitting back, wide with cover, before peeling wider into clear air and finishing over the top for an impressive win. Up to 1800m I do like and she rates highly.
7 Ruby Jean (Bet Now:Β $5.00) is racing as if she will appreciate 1800m. Adam Durrant trained mare that ran over the mile here last time out where she was wide with cover and near last in the run, but liked the way she finished her race off behind Glamour Packed. Think the extra 200m will suit her and she’s a knockout chance if they overdo it in front.
Race 5. (17:39) Tabtouch-better Your Bet (c3) 1500m
9 Miss Zedel (Bet Now:Β $3.50) might want one more, but the resumption from her was very encouraging and this isn’t a strong race. Resumed over 1400m here a couple of Wednesdays back and I loved the way she found the line late in the piece behind Tonkatuff, finishing a close up fourth. Gets a rise in trip…one more run maybe, but has more upside than most.
5 Igarashi (Bet Now:Β $4.40) is a progressive mare for the McAuliffe team that should prove hard to beat here. Was a few weeks between runs when surging hard late to get the job done over 1200m here, beating home a handy galloper in Tajmali. Little query at 1500m, but think she finds a perfect race to test the water.
3 Sakarya (Bet Now:Β $9.50) has a good third up record and can be a big improver here. She comes through the Tonkatuff race mentioned above where she was back on the rail and never really a winning threat, making little to no ground. The third up record is encouraging and she gets the 3kg claim, so think she can be a big improver here.
Race 6. (18:15) Seppelt Wines Hcp (c1) 1100m
2 Beau Zoom (Bet Now:Β $1.65) looks the good thing of the meeting. Neville Parnham trained gelding that was backed with confidence when an even money favourite first up over 1200m here and he justified the support with a spank job of his rivals. Back to 1100m shouldn’t be an issue and the depth here is thin. Should be winning.
4 Old Mick (Bet Now:Β $8.50) looks the good thing of the meeting. Neville Parnham trained gelding that was backed with confidence when an even money favourite first up over 1200m here and he justified the support with a spank job of his rivals. Back to 1100m shouldn’t be an issue and the depth here is thin. Should be winning.
3 He’s All Mighty (Bet Now:Β $16.00) will need luck from the gate, but reckon Adam Durrant has him going well. Bumped into subsequent Stakes placegetter Mystical View first up at Northam before going to Geraldton where he was good from the back behind Enactment. Think he will will run well. Not sure he beats Beau Zoom.
Race 7. (18:53) Devil's Lair Hcp (c1) 1400m
Hard fit now and up to 1400m, in the corner of 2 Brave Dream (Bet Now:Β $2.15) for the Williams camp. It was a 12/10 from Johnston-Porter to win her maiden over 1200m here, surging hard between runners to get up and win. Form out of that maiden has been pretty good and she does strike a very winnable Class 1.
1 Universal Angel (Bet Now:Β $12.00) should be suited up to 1200m. Resumed over 1200m here where he just lacked a turn of foot when it mattered but stayed on and was more than sound in defeat behind Solaia. Think the form out of that race won’t be too bad and this guy has upside as well as 3kg off after the claim.
5 Swift Gondo (Bet Now:Β $17.00) deserves another chance. Market said he had three legs when he resumed at Northam and punters got it spot on as he had the sit behind the speed and looked to travel well but when push came to shove, he folded and didn’t find much. He’s better than that, and the market knew he would run a howler, so giving him another chance.
Race 8. (19:30) Salinger (rsoly) 1400m
7 Caerhelan (Bet Now:Β $5.50) is building up a solid record for Ross Price and I think she can make it three on the bounce. Belmont winner two back before going to Northam where she sat back off the speed before Johnston-Porter eased her into clear air and away she went, bolting up and producing great late splits. She’s up to these and should prove hard to beat.
3 Tonkatuff (Bet Now:Β $4.20) is eight years of age, but he’s absolutely flying for Brad Graham and you could argue that he is in career best form at the moment. Was a month between runs when racing at this track/distance and gee he was an impressive winner, letting down hard from the back to get and win again. Parnham takes over and you’d like to think there is room for improvement.
1 Aconite (Bet Now:Β $8.50) is an interesting runner. Brett Pope trained mare that is around six weeks between runs, having not raced since September 19 over 2100m at Belmont when down the track behind Bonneville Black. Fresh legs, back in trip…not sure she wins, but could entertain for multiples at a good price.
Race 9. (20:10) Burgess Queen Stakes 1400m
I have to give 3 Queen Brown (Bet Now:Β $9.50) another chance, especially at the odds. She was very good first up when second to Clairvoyance before going to the Belgravia and she looked to be bolting, but when she got clear, she found nothing. Negative that Brad Parnham is off, whether he has looked elsewhere or has been dumped. Not sure, but she’s worth an each way ticket at the odds.
Think this race will determine just how good 2 Magical Dream (Bet Now:Β $3.70) is, whether she can be the #1 seed for Bob Peters re being the 3YO filly to head towards the Kingston Town. Her Belgravia win was outstanding, and did a bit wrong in the process. Got loads of upside…is $4 around the mark? Post race, could well be saying how did she go around that price and not even money.
10 Solaia (Bet Now:Β $12.00) is the progressive one here. Darren McAuliffe trained filly that ran good time relative to the class when an impressive winner at this track/distance last time out, getting three wide cover and charging clear late for a dominant win. Hardest test to date here, but off that last start effort, she’s up to this level.
Race 10. (20:40) James Squire Hcp (c3) 1000m
Think you’ll get a solid run for your money in the get out via 8 Express Time (Bet Now:Β $5.50). She’s nothing special, but is honest and more often than not is around the mark. Ran over this track/distance last time out when on speed and tried hard, but couldn’t quite finish it off, settling for fourth. Gets run of the race from the draw and she’ll do me.
1 Double Jeopardy (Bet Now:Β $7.00) is a Team Pearce trained gelding that resumes. He’s been a very frustrating horse since coming to WA so more often than not is around the mark. He resumes with one trial under the belt, but it was a pretty sharp trial. Tricky draw for him, but has the ability to take this out and is a key chance.
6 Cooking With Gas (Bet Now:Β $7.50) is a very interesting runner. Sarah Childs trained gelding that is first up, having not raced since December last year when winning his second straight race on his home track at Geraldton. Resumes with a solid Lark Hill trial under the belt and first up in town tells me there is intent to run well.
