29/4/2025 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Warrnambool, Brierly Steeplechase day

The Iconic Warrnambool Carnival kicks off on Tuesday, headlined by the Brierly Steeple (3450m). Weather is fine, track is soft (7) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Looks a race in two, but I do think the better stayer is 7 Stockman (Bet Now:  $SP.00). Keep in mind he ran eighth in the Melbourne Cup in 2022, so the trip is no issue and has clearly been sent to Wymon Wilde with eyes on jumping. Flat runs have been solid and I have liked what I have seen from him in trial work. Happy to be in his corner.

8 Through Irish Eyes (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has the C Maher polish and is a last start metro winner. That win came at Bendigo where he was ridden with intent from the outset and the end result was a strong on speed win. That followed solid efforts on the flat as well as impressive trials, so keen to see how he goes.

3 Killarney (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a real one batter so the trip is no issue and he’s in a good camp. He ran over 2800m at Kyneton last time where he lacked any real turn of foot and just whacked in the run to the line behind Raise The Note. Tick over jumps trial was good…doubt he wins, but a first four threat.

3 Highland Blaze (Bet Now:  $SP.00) for me. Shane Jackson trained gelding that will stay all day. He ran over 3000m at Sandown last start and was very good from off the speed when a close up fourth to Lodbrok. Tick over jumps trial behind Normandy Bridge at Terang and for mine, he moved much better, so I can’t work out why he is not closer to favourite.

6 Normandy Bridge (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has 10+ lengths on these in terms of class and that is why he is favourite, to go with the Maher/Pateman factor. He was down to resume in the Terang Cup as a tune up for this was scratched and instead has trialled for this. His flat speed is evident, but the jumping, at times, was scratchy, especially at Terang. He can win, but too short.

9 Zegalo (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the sleeper. He trialled like a rocket over the jumps at Ballarat before racing over 2400m at Sandown last week where he just found them a bit sharp but didn’t mind his finale in defeat behind Sparkle Link. Good camp for jumping, I wouldn’t pen him.

7 Sing For Peace (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top. Team Payne trained gelding that has been kept on ice with jumping in mind it appears. He’s only had two flat runs this time in, the latest being last Wednesday behind Sparkle Link at Sandown where he lacked change up speed but stayed on in defeat. He ran second in a track/distance Maiden Hurdle last year and looks on track to go one better.

8 Teewaters (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has very strong flat form and class, which will carry him a long way. He ran in a Maiden Hurdle at Ballarat where he got off speed and kept chasing with purpose but was no match late for impressive winner Bitcoin. Better for the run under the belt, he’s in the mix.

3 Havisham (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has looked strong in numerous jumps trials so keen to see how he goes on race day. Hasn’t set the world on fire in two flat runs so getting over the jumps for the first time this prep, I think he’s in the mix as a knockout hope.

8 Tobeyeus (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks the each way bet in this race. Jamie Edwards trained gelding that debuted at Hamilton in October where he got back to near last in the run but worked home with real purpose late in the piece in a race that has produced four winners. He has looked strong in jumpout work at Geelong and the Edwards/Moor combo has been fruitful previously at this Carnival.

13 Buttercup (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a daughter of Territories that is on debut for Tom Dabernig. She won a trial last week at Warracknabeal when on speed before being clicked up late and seemed to move quite well in winning. Trained on the track, J Allen on, she has to be respected.

4 Big Sexy (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a son of Swear that is on debut for the Raymond/Bell camp. He’s had a couple of jumpouts to get ready for start one, the latest coming on April 1 at Ararat when running second and although pushed out, I didn’t mind the way he moved. Stable love this Carnival so watch betting.

12 Miss Ole (Bet Now:  $SP.00) on top in what looks an even contest. Clinton McDonald trains this first starter, who looked to jump out really well recently at Cranbourne when on speed and moved with real purpose late in the piece when third. Ole Kirk progeny are flying and she should be strong late.

1 Killiana (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has the runs on the board to be respected. She won the VOBIS Gold Strike at Bendigo where she had to dig in late but class came to the fore and she was too good. Not sure what upside there is but she only has to hold her form to be around the mark.

4 Mrs Iglesia (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes here for Team Hayes off the back of an on speed win at Cranbourne where she was there to be beaten but she found under pressure to fend them off and score. Good racing style and seems short course suited.

1 Berry The Cash (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the best jumper in Australasia and yes, he’s better suited over further, but he’s a champion and I can’t believe we are getting $15+ for a champion. He’s ahd two flat runs in NZ to start this prep but his trial here a couple of weeks ago, despite being beaten over 30 lengths, I thought he handled the course well and jumped super. I’ll back in his class.

2 Leaderboard (Bet Now:  $SP.00) has the current runs on the board to be given serious respect. He was dominant at Pakenham last time out where he led throughout and gave nothing else a look in, winning quite comfortably. 4000m back to 3450m no issue, good racing style and has a great record here.

3 Instigator (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is eleven years of age but is a grand campaigner for Aaron Purcell. He ran third to Leaderboard at Ballarat. He got off speed and tried his guts out but was no match late for the class performer. I doubt he is good enough to win but can run top four.

10 Stardom Awaayts (Bet Now:  $SP.00) looks like he has been set for this race for some time and he seems a big price. Didn’t disgrace himself in the Terang Cup two back before going to Bendigo where he took forever to wind up, making a sustained run, but kept on and was good in defeat behind Gift Of Oratory. Home deck and 2350m, he is a great each way gamble.

8 Early Warning (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is racing consistently for Paul Preusker. She ran fourth in the Terang Cup when off speed and she kept chasing with purpose in a good effort in defeat behind Ziryab. Racing like 2350m will suit and Yendall rides. Hard to beat.

1 Ferago (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes through the Bur Dubai race from a few weeks back at The Valley. He got back off the speed and against the pattern, he worked to the line well enough in defeat. He’s found positive form and he’s certainly going well enough to take this out, plus looked sharp in a recent jumps trial win.

1 Rolls (Bet Now:  $SP.00) won this race last year and looks on track to repeat the dose. He resumed a tick over two weeks ago in the City Of Adelaide at Morphettville and worked home with real purpose late in the piece behind Hellsing. Fitter and up to 1700m, in well after the claim, extremely hard to beat.

3 Precious Charm (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes back to 1700m for Symon Wilde after spanking them in the Edenhope Cup over 2000m, leading throughout and she gave nothing else a look in, winning by a space and ran time. Back in trip suits, good racing style, she appeals.

8 Tikemyson (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a very interesting runner. Former Kiwi that makes his Australian debut for Symon Wilde. He brings with him some solid NZ form, albeit over slightly further than this, but has jumped out/trialled well leading in and fresh at 1700m signals some form of intent.

10 Belmia (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the each way bet. Jamie Edwards trained mare that resumes, having not raced since Jan 17 2024 at Sandown when racing over 1300m and was quite good in defeat behind Magnaspin. She’s had a long time off but her jumpout work has been excellent. Right price to find out.

5 Gronkowski (Bet Now:  $SP.00) comes here with fresh legs for Clayton Douglas, having not raced since March 1 down the straight at Flemington when far from disgraced in defeat behind the then in form Pivot City, who would be $1.50 against these, so the form does read well and a recent jumpout was sharp.

7 Thisismyturf (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Tom Dabernig trained gelding that resumes. He hasn’t raced since Oct 20 at Horsham when racing over 1200m but looked a tired horse, perhaps an end of prep run. Given a good break and his jumpout work has been quite strong.

15 Nizhoni (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is the throw at the stumps in the get out. This mare is first up, having not raced since Feb 14 at Terang when racing over the mile. She got near the speed and tried hard but just couldn’t quite see it through behind Tennessee Knight. Fresh at 1100m, she’ll spot them a start but I reckon she’ll be quite strong at the end whereas some of these will be gasping for air.

4 Stokke (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is a Patrick Ryan trained mare that resumes. This girl is first up, with her last run coming at Caulfield Heath on Nov 28 when giving them a start and a beating to win impressively. Looks to have jumped out/trialled well and good lead that B Shinn is booked.

3 Hedonist (Bet Now:  $SP.00) is knocking on the door. He ran over 1000m at Donald last time when back off the speed and held up at times but was good late in the piece behind Simply Sparklez. He maps to do no work and be effective late.

NEXT BEST: Race Two Number 3 Highland Blaze

LONG SHOT: Race Six Number 1 Berry The Cash
