Ten races will be run and won at Randwick this Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:00) Tab Highway Hcp (C3) 1400m
If this is a testing 1400m, then I think 11 Persian Beauty (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) comes right into play. Ran over the mile on her home track at Taree last time out where she was one of the first off the bit but she picked up, ran through the pain barrier and really attacked the line with purpose to win well. She’ll be strong at the end.
1 Optimo (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is in for a good prep for Marc Quinn. This gelding resumed at Newcastle over 1200m and closed off strongly from off the speed to finish second, producing the best last 600/400/200 of the meeting. Proven Highway performer and won’t mind some give in the track. Likeable.
9 Running Bear (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) will jump on the bunny and give her all. That is what she did at Scone, attempting to lead and gave a solid kick, but just couldn’t quite finish it off. That was her first look at the trip this prep so with that under the belt, that should hold her in good stead.
Race 2. (11:35) Precise Air Hcp 1400m
2 Owen County (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) is a horse I have plenty of time for. His two career outings have been excellent. Savaged the line late to win on debut at Kembla before going to the Clarendon at Hawkesbury and he should have fought the finish out. Just had no luck. Has eyes on the JJ Atkins, but a truly run 1400m here, he’ll be strong late.
7 Golden Queen (Bet Now: $2.20 TOP ODDS) brings the best form I feel. Just an unknown at 1400m but on form, she’s the pony to beat given last start, she ran third to what I think could be the best of the generation in the shape of In Secret at Scone in the Woodlands. If she runs out seven furlongs, she’s hard to beat.
4 Tango Fame (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) will love a bog track here, based on his last start win at Warwick Farm where he found similar conditions and gave nothing else a look in from the front in a commanding performance. There is depth to this 2YO race, but I think he can measure up and run well.
Race 3. (12:10) Canterbury League Club (Bm78) 1400m
Bit to work with here with dual acceptors. As it stands, I am with 1 Nicci’s Fling (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS). I thought she was very good in defeat in the Dark Jewel at Scone, and a little unlucky as well. Didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight and was good late when eventually clear. Back to a pretty thin 78 as a whole, and with the claim, I think she’s well placed.
7 And We Danced (Bet Now: $2.35 TOP ODDS) looks to be in for a good prep. Just one soft trial leading into her resumption at Scone two weeks ago and I really liked the way she finished her race off behind all the way winner Redoute’s Image, who got complete control and gave nothing else a look in. Fitter, hopefully a more genuine tempo, she’ll take beating.
5 My Demetra (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) doesn’t win out of turn but she’s a very honest mare for Team Snowden that resumes. Hasn’t raced since January 29 at Rosehill when near the speed throughout and battled away okay in defeat behind Crystal Pegasus. Good record at the track, handles wet conditions and has trialled up nicely in readiness for her return.
Race 4. (12:45) Midway (Bm72) 1200m
13 Rover (Bet Now: $34.00 TOP ODDS) is worth a throw at the stumps at odds. On the quick back up after racing last Saturday in the Midway at Rosehill. He was wide no cover for the trip and was entitled to knock up, but he kept digging in and I thought the run had plenty of merit. Right down in the weights, jockey upgrade and he’ll be strong at the end of a testing 1200m.
8 Budhwar (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is in for a good prep. Market wanted him when resuming in a Midway three weeks ago and I thought his effort in defeat was very good. He was part of a solid speed battle and was entitled to knock up but fought most of them off, only just getting beat by Showtime Lady. Hard to beat.
Best version of 7 Rebel Shadow (Bet Now: $14.00 TOP ODDS) sees him in the finish. Both runs this time in have come on his home track at Warwick Farm, bolting up fresh before finishing tailed off last behind Democracy Manifest. I think hard fit now and getting good weight relief are two big ticks.
Race 5. (13:20) Wilson Asset Management (Bm78) 2400m
6 Arabolini (Bet Now: $5.00) deserves another chance, especially with Hennessy taking over. I’d be very forgiving of his run two weeks back at Scone given he was near a very solid tempo and he’s a horse who races best when on speed, controlling and rolling whenever he desires. Reckon if that can eventuate here, he’ll run a much improved race.
5 Shameless Miss (Bet Now: $4.20) is racing really well this time in for Chris Waller and confident she can measure up to Saturday grade. Game second two back on Anzac Day on the Kenso track here before going to Warwick Farm where she found a bottomless track and in survival of the fittest, she finished best. She’ll be strong late and handles tough conditions.
3 Feel The Rush (Bet Now: $6.00) will land near the speed and try her guts out. She ran second to Shameless Miss at Warwick Farm where she was near the front throughout and tried hard to fend them off, but had no answers late for the Waller mare. Form around her is good enough to take this out.
Race 6. (13:55) Cancer Foundation (Bm72) 1200m
12 Huesca (Bet Now: $13.00) on top. WaterBott trains this colt, who resumes, having not raced since September 4 when down the track at Moonee Valley behind Mynumeruno, in a race which has produced seven winners. Thought the Blinkers sharpened him right up in a recent trial placing behind Bend The Knee, and out of trouble on speed, bred to swim, he’ll do me.
4 Democracy Manifest (Bet Now: $2.40) is a horse clearly talented, but I think he’ll need to be here because there is good depth to the field, much more than what he has beaten up in his two starts/wins this time in. If he can overcome the wide gate, I think he’s a leading chance.
9 Shadow Devil (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Capitalist colt for Mark Newnham that resumes. He created a good impression in his first prep, winning his first two starts in good style before being good in defeat in a rich race at Flemington, then looking a tired horse at Warwick Farm. Given a break and trials suggest he’s ready to go.
Race 7. (14:30) Taylor Construction Hcp 1100m
8 The Face (Bet Now: $9.00) will jump on the bunny and prove hard to run down. He was massive in defeat fresh in the Takeover Target at Gosford, doing a power of work in the run from the wide gate and he did a remarkable job to stick on like he did behind Blondeau. Back to 1100m, jump/run here and he’ll take beating.
Contender or pretender time for 3 Andermatt (Bet Now: $1.90). Well placed and duly saluted in two runs to start the prep. Stradbroke and potential Everest credentials went on the line in the Luskin Star and yes, wide no cover and keen in the run, but he was still pretty plain I thought. If he’s indeed going to reach better heights, he’d want to be putting this field away. He can win, but I couldn’t back.
6 Lord Olympus (Bet Now: $21.00) is a quality sprinter at his best and I think he finds a winnable race here. Ran a fortnight back in the Ortensia where he had a suck run in transit off the speed and tried hard. Just couldn’t quite finish it off behind Vulpine. Off his first up effort behind Andermatt, that’s good enough to take this out.
Race 8. (15:05) Fujitsu General Hcp 1400m
13 Coal Crusher (Bet Now: $2.80) is flying. Joe Pride has this knack with horses where they find form and hold it. 3/3 this time in, the latest coming at Gosford. He was there to be run down but he showed good fight to fend off He’s A Hotshot and win. Good test here, but no reason why he can’t win again.
7 Fender (Bet Now: $8.50) looks the map horse. Brett Cavanough trains this gelding, who comes back to 1400m after contesting the Scone Cup over the mile where he had a suck run behind the speed and presented to win when let down, but 1600m at that level just found him out when fourth to Rustic Steel. Back to 1400m and mapping ideally, he’s hard to beat.
8 True Detective (Bet Now: $11.00) is an improver second up. Somewhat thrown in the deep end fresh when resuming in the Luskin Star and he just looked in need of the run when down the track behind Flying Crazy. Has a solid enough record at Randwick and can give cheek with a more positive steer.
Race 9. (15:45) Uphire (Bm78) 1300m
9 French Marine (Bet Now: $4.00) on top. Kris Lees trains this gelding, who ran bravely in the Country Cup during the Scone Carnival, lumpng 61.5kg and just missing out on the win behind Eiger, who won yesterday, so the form has been ticked off, back to 1300m I like and he gets good weight relief.
12 Sacrimony (Bet Now: $6.00) deserves another chance for Chris Waller. Impressive winner at Hawkesbury two back before going to Scone where he looked a near good thing on paper and after the run he got in transit, he looked the winner, but found very little under pressure and was quite plain. Forgive a horse for one poor run.
8 Cotehele (Bet Now: $9.00) has been up a little while but I think is racing okay. Struggled on the bog two back in the Hawkesbury Guineas before going to Scone where he found firmer footing and ran a much better race in defeat behind Redoute’s Image. His best is clearly good enough. Hopefully gets conditions to showcase that.
Race 10. (16:25) Pf Civil (Bm78) 1100m
10 Fox Fighter (Bet Now: $13.00) should love getting to Randwick. David Payne trained three year old that ran over 1100m at Hawkesbury several weeks ago where he got back in the run and was good late without threatening behind Sacrimony. He should appreciate a truly run 1100m and will be strong at the end.
6 Hulk (Bet Now: $8.00) doesn’t win out of turn but is rarely far away. He resumed at Scone a fortnight back where he was very genuine and tried hard to wear them down. Just couldn’t quite get there when third to Athelric. Normally runs flat second up before a third up bounce back, so keen to see how he goes here second up in what is a winnable race.
11 Fastconi (Bet Now: $21.00) has a good second up record so an improved showing is on the cards after resuming at Scone. Never really a winning threat, but didn’t mind the way he finished his race off behind Athelric, a promising three year old. That form reads well for this.
