Race 1. (18:15) Msc Signs Hcp 1200m
I’ll take a chance with 3 Stanley Express (Bet Now:Β $SP.00), who resumes for Clinton McDonald. This guy has been kept on ice since an electric debut win in The Showdown at Caulfield in the Autumn, giving them a start and a beating, letting down with purpose late to win and win well. Trial work has been good, maps ideally and strikes a winnable race.
6 Stoli Bolli (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) should prove to be one of the hardest to beat here for Team Hayes. He comes through the McKenzie where he got off the speed and worked to the line with real purpose in a good effort behind Angel Capital, who won the Guineas Prelude, so the form reads well and I say commands respect here.
7 Thames (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is flying for James Cummings and commands respect I say. She has been sharp in both runs back, winning both, firstly at Geelong before going to Cranbourne where she got better as the race went on to win and win well. Good test here, but think she can measure up.
Race 2. (18:45) Drummond Golf (Bm84) 1200m
7 Gumdrops (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a daughter of Written Tycoon that resumes for Price/Kent. This girl is first up, having not raced since April 27 when down the track in the Tobin Bronze at Morphettville behind Skybird. She does have a real liking for The Valley, has trialled/jumped out well leading in and has good change up speed. The one for me.
4 Baraqiel (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) should appreciate getting to 1200m for the Corstens/Larkin camp. He ran over 1100m down the straight at Flemington two weeks ago where he tried hard from near the speed but just couldn’t quite finish the job when close up in defeat behind Moby Dick. Fitter, up in trip and back to a bending track, he rates highly.
6 Deekay (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) looks to have returned in pretty good order and his best is good enough to be dangerous. He resumed at this track/distance when off the speed and while he was never threatening, he kept finding the line in a good return behind Miss Aria. Good second up record and dangerous IMO if he can settle closer.
Race 3. (19:15) 55 Second Challenge Heat 1 955m
2 Marble Nine (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) comes back to the 955m after racing over 1100m at Morphettville in the Whylie where he led and gave a strong sight from the front but couldn’t quite see it through when run down late by a good horse, Press Down. Back to this set up, he has the right racing style and will be strong late.
4 Celui (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a son of Toronado that resumes for Brent Stanley. He did show good promise in terms of not being a squib last prep, running really well over 1200m during the Brisbane Winter Carnival. He is a bomb fresh horse and his jumpout work has been sharp, so watch the market.
They have tried 3 Beast Mode (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) over further but he does seem best as a jump/run short course type so he’s suited at 955m here. He ran over 1200m at this track last time when on speed and tried hard but couldn’t quite see it through behind Miss Aria. Back to this trip, jump and run, he’ll be dangerous.
Race 4. (19:45) Feehan Stakes 1600m
4 Pride Of Jenni (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is back on track. She was plain in the Memsie but had excuses. She bounced back in the Makybe Diva, leading throughout and looked the winner when she booted clear but was nabbed late by Mr Brightside. If this track is showing any hint of playing up/in, she will be extremely hard to get past.
1 Mr Brightside (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a star and a borderline champion I say. He got the dream run in transit in the Makybe Diva but even allowing for that, he was still impressive and knuckled down with real purpose late to wear down the gun mare Pride Of Jenni. His record at this track is incredible and will clearly take beating once again.
2 Antino (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) should run third. I was keen to risk him for the Spring but it’s amazing what a rider can do for a horse and B Shinn does click with him, as seen in the Makybe Diva where he was as brave as ever in defeat when third. I think he’ll stalk Jenni again and I’d be disappointed if he couldn’t beat home Attrition.
Race 5. (20:15) Scarborough Stakes 1200m
7 Zeitung (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) comes back a fair way in grade/depth, which looks ideal for her. She ran three weeks ago in the Furious where she tried hard over 1200m but she couldn’t quite finish the race off behind Manaal. Back to this level I like and if there is petrol left in the tank, she’s hard to beat.
10 Sassy Jenni (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) has done all her racing at this track and has talent. She resumed in the Atlantic Jewel where she attempted to lead throughout and gave a decent enough sight but being first up, condition just gave way late in the piece. I think with that run under the belt, she’ll be better off and be hard to get past, especially if the track is playing up/in.
9 In Her Eyes (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is a Star Witness filly for the Corstens/Larkin camp that resumes. She didn’t do a bad job as a juvenile, with her last run coming in the Champagne at Randwick behind a star, Broadsiding. That form clearly reads well for a race like this, and her jumpout work has been more than encouraging. Watch the market.
Race 6. (20:45) Stutt Stakes 1600m
I can only assume, hopefully, that the plan for 7 Henlein (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is this, three weeks into the Gloaming and then two weeks into the Spring Champion. I think if he handles the track, he has lengths on these and gets M Zahra aboard. I love Dawn Service and will lead, but he’s rock bottom. Henlein is just better than these I feel. Keen despite the gate.
3 Dawn Service (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) will put himself on speed and take running down. He was a few weeks between runs when racing in the Exford. He led, was there to be beaten but he found under pressure to fend them off and get the job done. He’s got room for improvement, he’ll land on speed again and be hard to get past.
4 Detroit City (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is an improving type for Dom Sutton. He ran behind Dawn Service in the Exford at Flemington. He was first up and tried hard but just lacked the hard fitness to go with them late in the piece but he was still a definite pass mark. Better set up here, I am not dismissing him as a threat.
Race 7. (21:15) Manikato Stakes 1200m
2 Veight (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) looks ready to rock and roll. I wasn’t 100% sold on him after his first trial but he went like a very good horse in his second trial last week, closing off with purpose late behind a speedster, Katsu. That’s two sharp trials under the belt, the grounding is there to run very well fresh.
1 I Wish I Win (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) looks spot on for this. He resumed in the Moir where he just found them too sharp over 1000m but you had to like the way he finished his race off in defeat behind Mornington Glory. Fitter and up to 1200m, I am sure he’ll get his chance to finish over the top…just a query of whether the stable has eyes on only one race, which is at Randwick in two weeks time.
5 Johnny Rocker (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is dangerous with his best. He resumed in the Moir where he had a suck run on the fence and tried hard but first up, in restricted room, I think be forgiving of his final position. He has since jumped out at Flemington and to my eye, went like a rocket, and has a good track/distance record. Knockout chance I say.
Race 8. (21:45) Stocks Stakes 1514m
10 Matriarch Rose (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) is worth a throw at the stumps in the get out. She is coming through inferior races, but I reckon she is sneaky flying. Each time she has got back in the run and each time, she has worked to the line with real purpose, clocking good late splits. Senior rider on now, maps to settle much closer in the run and for mine, she’ll run a big race at a big price.
1 Grinzinger Belle (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) should take beating here I feel. She had conditions in her corner in the Let’s Elope but even allowing for that, gee she was impressive, leading throughout and giving nothing else a look in. You’d like to think there is good upside to come and if the track is suiting those on speed, she’ll be hard to get past once again.
4 Second To Nun (Bet Now:Β $SP.00) can definitely bounce back. Forget she went around in the Balaklava Cup last time given she was tardy away, back in the run and was just never a factor when down the track behind Air Assault. J Kah on, she’ll sit forward and is dangerous for sure.
