Bendigo will host their traditional stand alone meeting this Saturday where it is Golden Mile Day. The weather is fine, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out nine metres for the entire circuit.
Golden Mile 💰: View the Field and Odds for the Golden Mile
Race 1. (12:15) Rsn 945am (bm90) 1400m
8 Second Slip (Bet Now: $2.45 TOP ODDS) looks the one to beat here to my eye. Will Clarken has done a fab job with him and he comes here off the back of a Stakes placing when second to Night Raid in the Matrice at Morphettville on Adelaide Cup Day. That form clearly reads well for an off season 90 race.
The key to 2 Tavidance (Bet Now: $3.50 TOP ODDS) is finding tracks with give in it so he gets conditions to suit for his resumption. Had a four run Spring/Summer prep and was very good each time out, but the one time he found genuine give in the ground was at Pakenham and the result was a spank job. Jumpout was solid enough and the claim certainly helps for a horse who does sprint well fresh.
I reckon Aaron Purcell has eyes on something for Warrnambool with 1 Guizot (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS). It does scream out of a prep run for the Carnival, but I think he runs well regardless. He comes here off a mini freshen up but his recent jumpout was a very good piece of work, which is unusual for him, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 2. (12:50) Smartline (bm84) 1100m
5 Street Icon (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) can bounce back here. This mare was good in defeat two back at Flemington behind the in form Subedar. She then went to the Abell at the Valley in a race that rated through the roof. She just couldn’t get involved behind Ancestry. Much better suited in a race like this and can easily win without surprising.
3 Vungers (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) has home track advantage and that should always be respected, especially given how good his record is here, with two wins and six placings from eight outings. Majority of those were in fairly moderate races compared to what he faces here, but he is so genuine and has jumped out well in readiness.
4 She’s A Thief (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) is a talented mare for Michael Moroney that resumes. This girl hasn’t raced since the Spring where she bombed the start in the Alinghi and took no competitive part behind California Zimbol. Thought her recent Werribee jumpout was more than encouraging and can sprint well fresh.
Race 3. (13:30) Apiam Animal Health Vobis Gold 1000m
He’s bred to handle a wet track and if he does handle it, 3 Starry Legend (Bet Now: $2.30 TOP ODDS) is the good thing on the card. He won like a Stakes class horse on debut at Sandown over 1000m, leading throughout and he gapped them. Market loved him, there was significant gaps in the field and he ran good time from the front. He wins all things being equal.
7 Matao Ma (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is an interesting first starter. Price/Kent team has this juvenile, who looked quite good in a recent Cranbourne trial. Was on speed most of the way before being clicked up by Walker and away he went to win well and ran time. Tricky draw, but doesn’t really matter at the 1000m start and has Jamie Kah.
11 Irish Mist (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) will put herself on speed and try hard. That was the case when a debut winner at Cranbourne over 1000m. Probably did find the best spot to be, on speed/rails, but she still had to put the race away and she did so. Harder here, but could sneak a first four spot without surprising.
Race 4. (14:10) Underground Cabling Sys.-bm84 2400m
There is enough in the form of 6 Saracen Knight (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) to say that he is only effective on tracks that have give in it, so with that in mind, I’m giving a chance here. In the fair dinkum stakes, he was awful first up in the Wangaratta Cup but that was on a firm deck and his record does suggest he hates it. Gets his toe in here and lone run on wet ground in Australia, he bolted up at Caulfield.
4 Fanciful Toff (Bet Now: $2.10 TOP ODDS) can atone for last start. Thought Teo got the tactics wrong on him a fortnight back at the Valley. This horse is one paced and a stayer, so opting for cover and a sit probably worked against him and in the end, cost him the win IMO. Bigger track, more positive ride, he can win.
9 The Statesman (Bet Now: $71.00 TOP ODDS) is ticking along nicely towards a jumps campaign. His two runs on the flat haven’t been too bad, the latest at the Valley behind the in form Snoano. Kept up to the mark with a jumps trial at Cranbourne and he won’t mind some give in the track. Can sneak a first four spot at big odds.
Race 5. (14:50) Catanach's Jewel Gold Bracelet 1400m
Market will be fascinating here. I think 1 Chantrea (Bet Now: $3.60) is clearly the best horse in the race and Blinkers first time for the resumption tells me there is intent. She did a very good job in WA for Lindsey Smith and we’ve seen that the stable rarely gets it wrong when they bring one over from WA, especially the Stakes class. Hoping the market finds her.
5 Need New Friends (Bet Now: $2.105) is four weeks between runs for Danny O’Brien since racing in the Tressady at Flemington. She got back in the run but had a decent drag into the race. Chased strongly and looked home but was nabbed late by Chaillot. That looks strong form on paper, but was she flattered by a very good ride? Time will tell.
2 Just Stellar (Bet Now: $46.00) is an absolute beauty for Chris Davis. She hasn’t got the class of some of these, but she is just so genuine. Ran over 1500m on Yarra Valley Cup Day when on speed for the trip and looked home when asked for the effort. Just nabbed late by Frag. She’ll be strong at the end and is a must for exotics.
Race 6. (15:30) Drinking. Driving-st Leger Trl 2200m
4 Liqueuro (Bet Now: $5.00) should eat up the 2200m here. Toughed it out best to win at Flemington over 2000m two back. Freshened up with a Derby in mind I dare say and he was really good late over the mile at Sandown. Gets to a more suitable trip this time around and finds a winnable race to my eyes.
1 Explosive Jack (Bet Now: $4.60) probably lacks the class to measure up in a Derby, but does have the Maher/Eustace polish and we know the record they have in 2000m+ races. This guy was thrown in the deep end in the Alister Clark and I thought stuck to the task very well in a high rating race won by stablemate Grandslam. Definite threat against these.
2 Salto Angel (Bet Now: $9.50) is heading towards an Oaks but is still a maiden, so she needs to win this to be considered a serious contender despite being the VRC Oaks runner up from the Spring. Thought she had her chance last start at Ballarat over the mile, but bumped into another Oaks candidate in Princess Rhaenys. Has the runs on the board re class and upside to come.
Race 7. (16:10) Bendigo Guineas 1400m
Better racing manners and 8 Annavisto (Bet Now: $2.35) looks the most likely. Just went way too keen in the run three weeks ago at Flemington over 1400m and that brought her undone on the line when just failing to pick up stablemate Cumberbatch. Hopefully she gets a more genuine tempo, can relax and finish over the top.
6 Military Parade (Bet Now: $9.00) has the engine under the hood I feel to give this a shake. He jumps to the 1400m from 1250m with a break between runs, but he’s in the right camp of Team Hawkes to continue progressing and off what he has produced in Sydney, he’ll eat up 1400m. Just doesn’t want to bomb the start too much.
10 Redeel (Bet Now: $9.50) looks to have come back in good order. Lovely ride from Walker saw her win fresh at Sandown, and while to the eye, she was pretty good, the race didn’t exactly smash the clock, so in that regard, she will need to improve, but is certainly in the right camp to do so.
Race 8. (16:50) Golden Mile 1600m
I’ll back in the judgement of Will Clarken with 14 Ironclad (Bet Now: $2.40). A win here and his rating will be high enough to secure starts later in the Spring at Group l level ie Sir Rupert Clarke/Toorak should the horse warrant going down that path, and I think he is that good. Sit/sprint in the CS Hayes last time and that was just the perfect set up for him because he does have an electric turn of foot. Just wants the track to dry up.
This is D-Day for 16 Moonlight Maid (Bet Now: $23.00). Her late splits weren’t too bad fresh in the Mannerism behind Rich Hips. Was expecting her to do a bit more in the Matron but she just got too far back in the run. Third up now, hard fit, she needs to stand up and be counted here.
Back in trip and back in grade/depth should help the cause of 6 Platoon (Bet Now: $6.00). He was enormous two back over 1400m at Flemington behind Morvada. The decision to back up a week later in the Australian Cup turned out to be clearly the wrong call as he didn’t fire a shot. 1600m-1800m looks his sweet spot and off the 1400m run, he’s right in this.
Race 9. (17:25) No Fuss Event Hire (bm78) 1300m
The Price/Kent camp has done a super job with 5 Fighting Harada (Bet Now: $2.80) to not only nurse him back to health, but to get him to perform strongly on race day, winning 2/2 since returning. Too good for them fresh at Pakenham before going to Sandown in a 78 where he was strong to the line and through it in getting the job done. You’d like to think there is upside and back slightly in trip no issue.
Can 6 Exeter (Bet Now: $6.50) repeat the dose? Consistency hasn’t been his strong point but he comes here off the back of a proper spank job of his rivals at the Valley on All Star Mile Day. Found the front/fence and as soon as that happened, it was race over. Harder here, but with his confidence up, he could well go on with it.
It is interesting that Waller has scratched Born A King and goes with 12 Irish Sequel (Bet Now: $41.00). From the jumpouts, Born A King clearly looked the more forward, but we have seen over time that these Waller imports, you let them under your guard and they can win at big odds. I think he’s still 6-12 months away, but his overseas efforts were very good.
