Queensland metro racing this Saturday heads to the Gold Coast for a really good nine event card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out a metre from the 1000m-400m; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (11:42) Cnw.com.au Handicap (80) 1200m
8 Of The Day (Bet Now: $2.40) was hard in the market when racing in a 0MW race over 1200m at Doomben two weeks ago and aided by a lovely ride from in form hoop Robbie Fradd, the mare chased hard and got the win in the shadows. The run prior behind Prioritise was a beauty and that form has been franked via Oink.
9 Final Zero (Bet Now: $3.60) looks the obvious. Michael Lakey trained mare who is in ripping form at the moment. Sat outside the speed in that race mentioned above and to her credit she gave a really good kick, but couldn’t out the finishing burst of Of The Day. Does get a slight weight pull, looks the leader and did place in her lone run here.
7 Allez Chival (Bet Now: $27.00) is a Lauri Wray trained mare who hasn’t won in a long time but she hasn’t found this weak of a field since then. Outclassed/did too much work last time out at Warwick Farm behind Golden Shoes but that race did have much more depth than what is engaged here and with these older horses, a trip away could spark them into form.
Race 2. (12:17) Haneco Lightning Handicap 1100m
4 Sony Legend (Bet Now: $5.00) for me here. Enigmatic sprinter for the Brian Smith camp who can be hard to catch at times but he does find a very winnable race here. He comes through the 1200m handicap at Doomben two weeks back won by Stella Ombra where he got into a tricky spot out the back and couldn’t really come on in a leader dominated affair. Has run well here before and a fast run 1100m should suit.
1 Hard Stride (Bet Now: $4.40) had some late market support when resuming over the 1200m at Doomben two weeks ago where he sat on speed most of the way and kicked hard but his condition just gave way when fourth to Stella Ombra. Maps well here to possibly lead this field and he will give a sight for sure.
2 Lonehero (Bet Now: $4.00) gets one more chance for mine. Matty Dunn trained sprinter who is well up to these when at his best form but that hasn’t been seen for some time and the jury is out. Has been freshened up since the Ramornie when making ground late behind Calanda. Likes the Gold Coast and races well on the fresh side.
Race 3. (12:52) Schneider Electric Plate (Class 3) 1100m
6 Vallesco (Bet Now: $8.50) is a smart gelding for the Liam Birchley camp who was backed as if unbeatable when resuming over the 1000m at the Sunny Coast and D Browne gave him a peach, sitting off the pace before pouncing at the right and finishing best. He can go on with it here for sure despite more depth.
2 Ocean Grand (Bet Now: $46.00) is the watch horse for mine. Former Cliff Bashford trained galloper having his first run for the Terry McCarthy yard. This horse has always shown city potential when right but being right has been his issue, with his last start being a flop during the Grafton Carnvial, but it was behind the low flying Havasay. Interesting to see what the market does.
13 Gatlinburg (Bet Now: $20.00) had been knocking on the door to win a race for some time and it finally came a couple of Wednesdays back at Ipswich when sprouting wings late out wide to nab Captain Parker right on the line. Stable is flying at the moment, especially with these Waratah runners.
Race 4. (13:27) NHP Electrical Engineering Products Handicap 1800m
Leaning the way of 4 Outraged (Bet Now: $4.40). He has been great in both runs back for the Kelly Schweida team. He is on the quick back up after racing last Saturday where he looked a tragedy beaten in the end when a narrow second to Yabl Dabl Doya, getting badly held up when appearing to be bolting before eventually getting the split and savaging the line to just miss. Only needs an ounce of better luck to go close.
1 Mr Epic (Bet Now: $3.30) comes through the Monteux race at Doomben two weeks ago and his effort in defeat was very good. Sat up near the speed most of the way and loomed large to pick up the eventual winner but he just packed too many punches when it mattered. On his home track and I think he will be suited coming back in trip.
5 Anton En Avant (Bet Now: $14.00) is a horse I am prepared to give another chance to. He ran over 2040m at Doomben a fortnight back and chased hard all the way when third to Monteux but I think he just bottomed out late, telling me that back to 1800m should suit. Does tend to save his best for the Gold Coast and he strikes a very winnable race.
Race 5. (14:02) Legrand Australia Handicap (70) 1400m
18 Gregory (Bet Now: $9.50) gets the nod for me here. Brian Smith trained galloper who resumed over the 1000m at the Sunny Coast on August 9 and ran well I thought when third to Exceed Battle but perhaps just ran out of puff late. 1000m-1400m and from provincial to town isn’t easy, but he does appear to have enormous scope, draws well, weight relief and Cassidy remains on.
3 D’Harmony (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Steve O’Dea trained gelding who resumed over 1200m at the Sunny Coast a couple of Sundays back and I liked the way he toughed it out. Looked gone a couple of times but kept coming, with the winner blousing them nearer the inside. Has won second up and 1400m looks ideal.
8 Bourbon Road (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Tony Gollan trained son of Sequalo who needed a confidence boost given he had been just going through the motions a touch which is why Gollan sent him to Toowoomba. Ran over 1300m there and while he didn’t win, he did make up nice ground late to run second to a very promising galloper Mr Boxvale. Don’t underestimate that form and that is the first time in a while that Bourbon Road has attacked the line.
Race 6. (14:37) Prysmain Cables Handicap (80) 1200m
10 Delightful Feeling (Bet Now: $13.00) on top. The market said this horse only had three legs when resuming at the Sunny Coast a couple of Sundays back and the punters knew. He struggled late and ran out of puff when finishing down the track behind Windy Sands. The trials leading in were good so I wouldn’t drop off just yet.
15 Revaldor (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Bruce Brown trained gelding who has been freshened up since racing over the 1350m at Doomben on July 8 when working home gamely to run second to Bushy. This horse isn’t the most reliable on the fresh side, but Hammersley remains and he is a horse who doesn’t mind a bit of give in the track.
6 Bushy (Bet Now: $8.50) has been given a little freshen up for the Gary Duncan yard. Scored a nice win under Jimmy Orman two back at Doomben before backing up seven days later on his home track at the Sunny Coast and struggling behind Aomen. Drops a bit in depth here and he is a winner at the Gold Coast.
Race 7. (15:17) BGW Group Of Companies Handicap 1100m
Going to give 6 Whypeeo (Bet Now: $3.70) another look here. Smart customer for Toby Edmonds who spanked them on debut at Ballina before going to Doomben a fortnight back where he looked a bit lost, did plenty wrong and was wide throughout before just fading late to run fourth. Working progress it would seem, finds a thin race and Lloyd back in.
4 Colosimo (Bet Now: $19.00) returns to the scene of her debut win and she strikes a winnable race so she gets one more chance. I think she can be forgiven for her two failures so far with Waller in Sydney. Both races she has had excuses. Fresh she had to drag them up to the leader, and then last time out she pulled her head off. If she brings her best, she takes care of these.
11 The King’s Widow (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Tony Gollan trained filly who debuted in a open 3YO handicap at the Sunny Coast where she was hard in the market and she ran well in defeat I thought when a narrow second to Suerte, who had performed well in town. Has to improve a touch here, but I think she can.
Race 8. (15:57) CNW Electrical Wholesale Handicap (Class 6) 1400m
3 Denarius (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Brian Wakefield trained galloper that has been very good in two runs back from a break. Last start came over 1200m at Randwick where he flashed home from worse than midfield to run fourth to the in form sprinter Mana. Clearly looking for further, which he gets here, plus he is flying in would seem. Just needs luck.
4 Star Of Night (Bet Now: $7.00) had really good market support when resuming at Doomben over 1200m a fortnight back and she did a really good job against the bias when making ground to run third to Of The Day. The trials leading in were sharp also, so she appears to have come back in really good order and should take some beating up to 1400m.
2 Cornrow (Bet Now: $11.00) was a dominant winner two back when ridden a treat by Brad Stewart before having a three week break and racing well but not well enough when fifth to the well performed Oink, who’d be odds on here. That form reads well for this and he did place in his lone Gold Coast run.
Race 9. (16:37) Kimberley Accessories Handicap (0MW) 1800m
2 Chloe’s Comet (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Toby Edmonds trained mare who is three weeks between runs since racing over the Doomben mile where she got back in a farce of a contest, sitting back in a crawl and she had no hope behind El Campeador, but she did attack the line with purpose. Think she’ll eat up the extra furlong and rates highly.
11 What’s That (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Tony Gollan trained five year old gelding who had good market support when racing over the Ipswich mile last time out and Fradd gave punters no cause for concern with a sweet ride on the horse and pulling clear late for quite a dominant win. The run in town fresh was very good and up to 1800m looks ideal.
7 Robbers Cobber (Bet Now: $14.00) rises sharply in grade, but he does deserve a crack at the metro level. His last two wins have come at this track/distance and visually they haven’t been spectacular, but he has toughed it out and has been very strong to the line in getting the job done. Home track advantage, hard fit and in ripping form.
