Morphettville will play host to a nine race card on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out eight metres from the 1200m-Winning Post; Out six metres for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:02) G.h. Mumm Mdn Plate 1100m
3 Strike Eagle (Bet Now: $3.40) is the obvious watch horse. Team McEvoy trained juvenile that returns to racing as a gelding. Debuted down the Flemington straight back in January and didn’t fire a shot behind Abseiler. Has been gelded, jumped out well and finds a thin race to kick off his career without the jewels.
4 Taunting (Bet Now: $2.05) has the race day experience under the belt and that should hold him in good stead. That run was a debut on the Parks track two weeks ago. Was wide throughout and battled on pretty well after covering ground, finishing second. If he gets luck from the tricky draw, he’s right in this.
5 Vizere River (Bet Now: $7.00) is a David Jolly trained son of Alpine Eagle that debuts. Interesting that there has been early specking for him despite jumpouts saying he might need more time, but he’s in a good camp and this race, as a whole, is on the thin side, so watch the market.
Race 2. (12:37) Accolade Wines (bm68) 1200m
2 Victory Club (Bet Now: $7.00) has done little wrong this time in and see reason why he can’t make it 3/3 this prep. Both starts/wins this time in have come over 1200m at Murray Bridge, each time ridden a treat by Opperman, who remains on here, and should sit off what looks a genuine tempo.
6 Fall On A Star (Bet Now: $7.00) is racing pretty well at the moment for Phillip Stokes. Put together a couple of sharp wins on the bounce prior to racing two weeks ago on the Parks track where she led and tried hard, but was just no match for a smart animal in Imperial Hilton. That form reads well for this.
4 Short Stories (Bet Now: $15.00) has the Will Clarken polish and commands respect. They rode him cold in his opening two career outings. Three weeks ago on the Parks track, they gave him a dig in the ribs to settle near the speed and the moved worked. He found when required and was too good. Harder here, but have to respect the stable.
Race 3. (13:12) The Junction Mdn Plate 1200m
8 Lottie’s The Boss (Bet Now: $8.50) is a daughter of Foxwedge for Michael Hickmott that resumes. Hasn’t raced since her debut back in February over this track/distance where she was on speed and gave a solid enough kick when asked but no match for them late when third to Daily Spirit. She’ll improve with the prep under the belt and is in the right camp so watch the market.
14 Turfitt (Bet Now: $3.70) has the engine under the hood to give this a shake. Ran in a 1300m maiden on the Parks track three weeks back where she was backed as if unbeatable. For those that were on, you were never comfortable in the run. She was wide, keen and just didn’t really fire at all in a plain effort. Fresh legs back to 1200m, she can bounce back.
Reckon a rise to 1200m will suit 3 Utah Joe (Bet Now: $12.00) for David Jolly. Was 1100m back to 1000m two weeks ago on the Parks track. Was off the bit from a fair way out but stayed on and was sound in defeat. The prior effort at Strathalbyn suggested he can win a maiden, so not dismissing him here.
Race 4. (13:47) Furphy (bm78) 1050m
6 Larimer Street (Bet Now: $3.20) has had a couple of runs now for David Jolly and looks to be getting better. Lovely ride from Gatty saw him bolt up three weeks ago on the Parks track over 1000m and he was very strong late. Proven at 1200m but seems to be enjoying life as a short course galloper.
4 Mum’s My Hero (Bet Now: $7.00) has a fab track/distance record and commands respect for Craig Curtis. Resumed three weeks ago on the Parks track when back off the speed and worked to the line pretty well late albeit never really a threat to impressive winner Larimer Street. His track/distance stats will ensure he is in the market as a key chance.
2 Star Hills (Bet Now: $20.00) can bounce back. This guy was on a path towards the Goodwood but after failing to measure up in the Railway, then the McKay, the stable pulled the pin and freshened him up. He was racing very well prior to that so back to this level, he deserves another chance.
Race 5. (14:22) Dominant (bm60) 1526m
I’ll take a chance with the Team McEvoy three year old 2 My Boy Birmingham (Bet Now: $3.20). Not sure he beat much when a debut winner over 1500m on the Synthetic at Ballarat, but it was quite a strong given how hard he went early, the first 900m in 53 and change. He just kept going and was strong, so confident he can measure up in a race like this.
10 Pentire’s Spirit (Bet Now: $20.00) deserves another chance. Toughed it out strongly to win his maiden two back at Strathalbyn. Then went to the Parks track in a sit/sprint and wasn’t suited at all behind Imperial Hilton. This is a thin 60, so with a more genuine tempo, he can fire.
I’m convinced that 3 Lady Bethany (Bet Now: $10.00) is racing well. Luckless two back on the Parks track behind Poysed To Rein. Then backed up a week later there where she just did too much work out wide and tired late. If she gets an economical run in transit, she’ll be hard to beat.
Race 6. (15:02) Cancer Council Sa (bm78) 2032m
6 Lorente (Bet Now: $7.00) has done little wrong so far in his eight start career and I think he can measure up to this form of metro level for the Maher/Eustace camp. Has been given a mini break since winning on testing ground at Ballarat. Two time winner at the trip, in the right camp, handles all conditions…he’s a safe option.
2 Not Usual Glorious (Bet Now: $3.30) has done little wrong since joining Travis Doudle and I think he can win again. Lovely aggressive ride from Gatt saw him win on the Parks track two weeks ago. Knocked up late, but entitled to given the ride, and he was still pretty strong to the line. He’ll have no issue with 2000m and was only second up, so he’s got improvement.
9 Does It (Bet Now: $4.20) is a consistent four year old for Team Jolly that is rarely far away from the action. Impressive winner two back at Gawler before going to the Parks track where I thought Toeroek rode a peach race on him. Just couldn’t quite get past Not Usual Glorious. Should be around the mark again.
Race 7. (15:42) Sajc Archivers (bm68) 1600m
5 Icecrusher (Bet Now: $2.70), on paper, hasn’t exactly ticked off the 1600m box, but if you look at her three track/distance runs, for the most part, she has been quite good. Impressive winner two weeks back on the Parks track, sitting back in a slowly run race and showing good change up speed under Opperman to get the job done. Hard to knock the way she’s going at the moment.
10 Crypto Currency (Bet Now: $3.10) has been given a mini freshen up for Matty Seyers since slogging it out best under Pannell to win at Gawler on a somewhat testing track, so conditions here will be no issue and I do like that Pannell sticks. He’s one of the hardest to beat.
2 Serious Spender (Bet Now: $6.00) has had a couple of runs back from a break and I think is racing well. Latest run came two weeks ago over the 1550m on the Parks track when back and closing off okay without threatening when fourth to Jaguary, an in form galloper. Like her on the bigger track and is getting towards peak fitness.
Race 8. (16:21) Tab (bm68) 1200m
13 Ambidazzle (Bet Now: $4.60) is bursting to win another race for Phillip Stokes. Just keeps finding one or two better on the day but more often than not is around the mark. That was the case two weeks ago on the Parks track when third to Icecrusher in what was a sit/sprint. Like her on the bigger track and is hard to beat.
7 Li’l Hank (Bet Now: $7.00) is racing well. Market liked him at a price when he raced a fortnight back on the Parks track and it was proven right because he got back and worked home well nearer the inside when second to Midnight Storm, who was plain last Saturday but may not have handled the back up. Hard to beat here I’d suggest.
11 Aray Of Sunshine (Bet Now: $8.50) deserves another look. Rob Wilkinson trained mare that resumed over 1000m a fortnight back on the Parks track and just looked in need of the run to my eye behind Hills, but still finished strongly to run second. She’ll take good improvement from that and has more upside than most.
Race 9. (17:00) Irish Race Day At M'ville-bm60 1050m
3 Magic Phantom (Bet Now: $7.00) has done little wrong this time in for Jon O’Connor. Last couple of runs have come over 1000m on the Parks track, the latest being two weeks ago when back off the speed and working to the line okay when third to Hills, who was beaten last Saturday at Murray Bridge, but had excuses. The stable, I think, have figured out the key to him – keep him to short trips.
1 He’s Exclusive (Bet Now: $3.20) is the big query here. Jumpouts/trials were okay without being flash but still, he was smashed in betting for his Aussie debut at Murray Bridge. You’d have to mark him down as plain on paper given he had the dream run, but the vet post race found he had Atrial Fibrillation, so a clear excuse. Respecting the market push fresh and the camp getting him right.
4 Sitting Bull (Bet Now: $9.50) was scratched early from Murray Bridge on Wednesday in preference for this race, so I think that might be a lead that the stable think he’s going well to measure up at Saturday level. Ran over 1000m at Murray Bridge just under two weeks ago and was good late from off the speed when third to Skara Brae. Dangerous if he can sit closer in the run.
