Saturday metro racing makes a rare appearance at Sandown Hillside. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (12:55) Ladbrokes Switch Hcp 1300m
The trials and jumpouts suggest that 5 Shadowheart (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is pretty smart and straight to 1300m on debut I like. Son of Stratum Star for Danny O’Brien that looked to trial up pretty well at Werribee last week when going about his business under no real pressure. Jamie Kah rides and think he’s hard to beat.
1 Picarones (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) looks a handy enough filly for James Cummings. Debuted a few weeks ago at Caulfield where she sat back off a fast speed before presenting wider and unleashing a strong finale to win and win well. Overall time was okay but they did come home slow, due to the early burn. Has race experience, winning race experience, and in the right camp.
9 Tatsuro (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a son of Maurice resuming for the Busuttin/Young team. Had two runs in the Spring in a couple of solid races and was outclassed but far from disgraced in defeat. Been given a good break and has looked solid enough in a couple of Cranbourne jumpouts, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 2. (13:30) Thoroughbred Club (bm64) 1300m
I’m really surprised $20+ is available for 2 Vladivostok (Bet Now: $16.00 TOP ODDS). Yes, seven years of age and his best days might well be behind him, but off the jumpouts, he’s flying. Was pushed out in the latest jumpout, which came here, but he was taking ground off Pippie in a strong piece of work. If he can get on speed without doing too much work, he’ll only run well.
4 Irish Butterfly (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) looks a leading contender. I just think he’s too short in early betting. Resumed as a gelding at Warrnambool and yes, you could make a case he was unlucky, but I thought on the line, he had his chance. Form around him does read well though and has upside.
8 Ellis Park (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) has the engine under the hood to give this a shake. Kav trains this gelding, who was an impressive winner on the Lakeside course here on debut but in three runs since, he has failed to fire a shot. Recent Flemington jumpout was encouraging and his best is good enough.
Race 3. (14:05) Ladbrokes Back Yourself (bm78) 1300m
Don’t think there was any fluke about the first up win of 5 Imperial Lad (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) on the Lakeside course. Jumpouts suggested he had come back well and he confirmed that with a dominant win from on speed, and what impressed me was how strong he was through the line, suggesting 1300m here is ideal. The one to beat.
3 Indispensable (Bet Now: $5.50 TOP ODDS) is flying for Paul Preusker and deserves a crack at Saturday level. Lovely ride from Campbell Rawiller saw him win impressively over 1400m on the Lakeside course last time out, getting the suck run behind the speed and finishing best. Harder here, but hard to ignore the way he is going.
2 Seberate (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. Hayes/Dabernig trained gelding that was a strong winner two back at Flemington in a solid race before going to Caulfield where he was caught wide throughout, so forget he went around. If he gets the rub of the green this time around, he can bounce back.
Race 4. (14:40) Clanbrooke Racing Hcp 2400m
This is D-Day for 2 Mosh Music (Bet Now: $3.90 TOP ODDS). If she can’t win here, she’ll struggle to win again. Was really keen on her last time out at Flemington and at first look, was disappointed with her effort, but she was held up at a vital stage and couldn’t build the revs. Gets clear air from the outset this time around and her turn of foot should prove too good.
6 Stars Of Carrum (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) has an awful strike rate, but reckon Moods has him going well. Worked to the line okay fresh at the Valley before having a six week. Ran at Flemington and kept whacking away without being a threat to Defibrillate. He’s got upside to come and up to 2400m is a big tick.
8 Saint Eustace (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) will want this to be a truly run 2400m to be any real threat. Been kept on ice somewhat since contesting the Bagot when a solid third to dominant winner Tralee Rose. Form prior reads well enough for a race like this and with the claim, he gets in very well.
Race 5. (15:20) Ladbrokes Easy Form (bm70) 1600m
2 Quantum Mechanic (Bet Now: $2.15) looks just about ready to win now for the Price/Kent team, which are having somewhat of a lean run in town at the moment. This mare has had two runs back from a break. Resumed behind Hearty Lass at the midweeks at Caulfield before going to Flemington on New Years Day where she was a real eye catcher from the back behind Fundraiser. If she can sit a pair or two closer in the run, she’ll take a power of beating.
Hard to knock the way 1 Intellective (Bet Now: $7.50) has returned. 2/2 this time in, bolting up fresh at Terang before racing here where she had the suck run behind the speed before getting an inside split and dashing through to win and win well. Creeping up in relative weights, but she’s going super.
4 Part Time Lover (Bet Now: $13.00) deserves another chance. This mare was an impressive winner two back on the Lakeside course here before going to Flemington when ridden a touch warm on speed and dropped out. Have to keep in mind there was a headwind early on that meeting so cover was a big tick. She’s better with a bunny to chase and looks overs.
Race 6. (16:00) Tile Importer Hcp 1400m
Really surprised there is double figures on offer for 6 Wise Counsel (Bet Now: $8.00). He brings the solid Spring form and is taking on off season gallopers here so IMO, he only needs to be half ready to give this a shake. Resumes as a gelding and his recent jumpout win over 1000m at Cranbourne was really good. Keen to back him each way.
4 Bella Tiara (Bet Now: $3.30) is racing so well and happy to be with her. Matty Williams trained filly that sprouted wings late out wide to win over 1400m at Caulfield last time out against her own age/sex. Isn’t badly in at the weights despite her recent efforts, she’s in form and is racing like the 1400m here will suit.
3 Still Be Friends (Bet Now: $12.00) could be a sleeper here if he finds the front and gets control. He led at Flemington last time out and on face value, thought he was pretty plain, but there was a headwind that meeting and those on speed weren’t really advantaged. Can bounce back here for sure.
Race 7. (16:40) Ladbrokes Odds Boost (bm84) 1500m
5 Grinzinger Allee (Bet Now: $2.40) can atone for first up. That resumption came at Caulfield where he just got held up for a stride or two when attempting to build the revs. Got clear and savaged the line late when second to Rule The World. Has more upside than most and like him on a bigger track.
I keep waiting for 4 Fundraiser (Bet Now: $3.80) to drop off but he keeps getting the suck run near the speed and finishes best to win. That is the scenario of his past two starts/wins, the latest over the mile at Flemington in a fast run race which explained them coming home pretty ordinary. Progressive and won’t know himself with 58kg.
8 Caffrey (Bet Now: $3.80) has been teasing to win one this prep and I reckon he gets his chance here. Ran over the mile at Flemington on New Years Day where he was back off a good speed before angling clear late and finding the line strongly. Just missed out on the win when second to the very much in form Fundraiser. Looks ready to win and finds a suitable race.
Race 8. (17:20) Mrc Members (bm70) 1500m
2 Heart Of Puissance (Bet Now: $3.20) does look the best horse in the race and great to see him back. Hasn’t raced since the All Star Mile last year where he ran last, which for the most part was to be expected, but did pull up lame as well post race. Loved his Terang jumpout and really, the form around him is superior to this lot. If the market likes him, jump on.
5 Seafield Road (Bet Now: $16.00) has returned in good order for the Nick Harnett stable. Found the best part of the track two back at Sale and won well before racing last Thursday night at Pakenham where he got to the outside and really surged hard late to get up and win. Deserves a crack in town and finds a winnable race.
3 King Magnus (Bet Now: $7.50) has been up a little while for the Griffiths/De Kock camp but is racing so well and holding his form. Ran over 1400m at Caulfield last time out where he had the suck run behind the speed and tried hard, but had to settle for a narrow second to Nordic. Draws well again, hard fit, racing well…leading contender.
Race 9. (17:55) The Big Screen Company (bm78) 1000m
Back on a bending track, want to give 8 China Affair (Bet Now: $4.80) another chance. Both runs this time in have come down the straight at Flemington, resuming with a close up second to Sword Of Mercy before a close up fourth to Ididitforlove. Olly takes over which I like, draws to get run of the race and third up, will be hard fit.
5 Not Enough Effort (Bet Now: $4.60) has been disappointing since early on his career, but the signs were encouraging first up at Flemington down the straight. Sat near the speed and fought on pretty well in defeat when third to Ididitforlove. Is a second up winner and loves racing at Sandown.
4 A Good Yarn (Bet Now: $17.00) will likely lead this field up and will give a sight at odds I’m sure. Hasn’t raced since August 29 when near the speed at Caulfield and fighting on okay behind Express Pass. Can sprint well fresh and will look the winner at some stage…last 100m will be the test.
