Albury Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Albury Cup
Race 1. (13:05) Carlton Draught Super Mdn Plate 1175m
1 Final Creek (Bet Now: $SP.00) is short enough but he looks to have a bit on this lot. He was a drifter in betting when resuming over 1000m at Wagga, where he got off the speed and kept finding the line in a good return when second to Trifecta Ruby. Fitter and up in trip, depth isn’t as deep, upside to come…the one to beat.
Back in trip I find interesting with 6 Check Side (Bet Now: $SP.00) but he should be strong at the end. He ran over 1400m at Wagga last time. He got back to near last in the run made up decent headway without threatening behind Sinepia. He has been gelded since last run and outside the favourite, this race is thin, so he doesn’t need to improve much to be around the mark.
2 Grisbi’s Pal (Bet Now: $SP.00) has had 31 chances to break the maiden status, so backing him to win…pass, but he could run top four. He ran in a 1200m Kyneton maiden last start where he got off the speed and ran an honest race without threatening when beaten 6.6L by Capital Lover. The depth here isn’t as deep this time around…one for exotics.
Race 2. (13:45) Adrian Ledger Memorial (Bm66) 2400m
I can only assume Anna Roper riding is the reason 2 Vaguer (Bet Now: $SP.00) is $1.50 and not $1.10. All things equal, he has panels on this lot. He beat up a moderate bunch at Canberra last time out but despite them being moderate, I thought the race was stronger than what he faces here. Gets in well after the claim, 2400m no issue…he just wins.
4 Foxtrot Bravo (Bet Now: $SP.00) is on the seven day back up for Theresa Bateup after winning last Friday at Kembla where he knuckled down strongly to win over 2400m, wearing them down to win and win well. He has run well in this race on a couple of occasions and off a win, he gets some form of respect.
3 Zoffala (Bet Now: $SP.00) won’t know himself back to this level. He ran in the Lord Reims at Morphettville, a lead up towards the Adelaide Cup, when outclassed, finishing down the track behind Yellowbrick Road. Back to this level suits and is a knockout hope if there is petrol left in the tank.
Race 3. (14:25) Meredith Roof Plumbing Hcp (C2) 1000m
3 Outback Angel (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the way I am leaning. Allan McRae trained filly that produced sustained speed from the outset to win over 900m at Goulburn in a pretty sharp display on testing ground. Good racing style for this track/distance and she should get firmer footing this time around. Hard to run down.
4 Rumours Abound (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a daughter of Press Statement for Ron Stubbs that resumes. This girl is first up, having not raced since August 19 at Randwick when down the track in a Highway behind subsequent Saturday metro performer Derry Grove. Looked really sharp in a recent trial win at Wagga and will press forward. Leading contender.
2 Barn Zee (Bet Now: $SP.00) is an improver for Sylvia Thompson. He resumed with a bang when winning a 58 at Wodonga before going to Wangaratta where he did a bit too much work on speed and just felt the pinch late in the piece when down the track behind Kumicho. Like him back to 1000m, he’ll press forward and can bounce back.
Race 4. (15:00) Dux Albury (Bm58) 1175m
11 Prophets Daughter (Bet Now: $SP.00) has returned in really good order for Ron Stubbs. This mare caught the eye first up at Wagga before racing here where they rode her with intent, settling near the speed before angling clear and finishing best for a strong win. Maps ideally again and third up from a spell, should just about be at peak fitness.
10 Stern Impulse (Bet Now: $SP.00) rates highly for Team Corstens. This mare resumed over 1200m at Benalla when near the speed throughout and fought on gamely in defeat when third. Better for the run, he rates highly despite a potentially sticky draw,
2 Capital Express (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks like she will be enjoying life under Donna Scott. She resumed over 1000m at Wagga in her first run for the stable and I thought she closed off her race really well without threatening when fourth to Ledecky’s Dream. If she can get luck from the gate, she’s dangerous.
Race 5. (15:35) Lexus Of Wodonga Hcp (C3) 1500m
2 Guess (Bet Now: $SP.00) is worth a throw at the stumps each way. Former UK galloper that has had a couple of runs down under for Tim Donnelly, both at Wagga. He was run off his legs fresh over 1000m before going to 1400m where he ran a much improved race, working home well enough behind Overrun. Hard fit, up in trip, I think he’s the value and worth a speck.
4 Destructive Diva (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a talented filly for Norm Gardner that comes here off the back of an impressive win at Moruya where she gave them a start and a beating, finishing over the top for a sharp victory. Has always shown good ability and off last start, commands respect.
11 Breakaway Week (Bet Now: $SP.00) is one I can entertain for wider exotics. This mare ran over 1400m at Goulburn last time out where she got a fair way out of her ground but I really liked the way she found the line late when second to Sidenay. That is a couple of runs at 1400m on the bounce and now up in trip, she’s a first four contender.
Race 6. (16:15) Albury Guineas 1400m
11 Straight Fire (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks a big price here I feel for Todd Smart. This filly has done little wrong in a three start career. Gave them a start and beating to win the maiden at Wagga two back before going to Goulburn where she again got a mile out of her ground but was very good late when second to Chasing A Quid. The gate is tricky, but if she gets a drag into the race, she’ll be strong late and this isn’t a deep race.
2 Piercing Arrow (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the winner if he runs up to his best but I am not sure where he is at. He resumed over 1300m at Warwick Farm when ridden with intent on speed and he didn’t fire in the straight when down the track behind McHale. Had trialled well leading in and he has the GaiBott polish so don’t dismiss him, but watch the market.
8 Direct Fire (Bet Now: $SP.00) is a handy three year old for Theresa Bateup that could have gone done the Canberra Guineas path but has been kept on ice with this race in mind. He won the Guineas Prelude at Canberra, leading throughout and was strong to the line in winning. Stable is in form and despite a tricky gate, commands respect.
Race 7. (16:55) Albury Gold Cup 2000m
3 Fawkner Park (Bet Now: $SP.00) looks the winner for Annabel Neasham. He did a really good job in the Australian Cup Prelude last time at Flemington, getting back in a barrier trial tempo race and he kept finding the line in a good effort behind Young Werther, pulling up post race with a throat issue so he’s had excuses. Prior efforts were sound, finds a winnable race…keen.
6 Miracle Spin (Bet Now: $SP.00) is knocking on the door to win. Matty Smith trained gelding that ran over 2000m at Randwick last time out where he got a fair way out of his ground but he was able to duck and weave, slice his way through and drove hard late, just missing out on the win when a narrow third to Floating. He can certainly take this out.
7 Blackcomb (Bet Now: $SP.00) is third up from a spell and should just about be at peak fitness. This mare was good in defeat fresh under the lights at Canterbury before going to Randwick for the Aspiration where she was far from disgraced behind Lekvarte, beaten under three lengths. Like her up in trip, good gate and has more upside than most.
Race 8. (17:35) Flat Knacker 900m
6 Lipstick Swing (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes here with fresh legs for Tim Donnelly, having not raced since Feb 16 when racing over 888m at The Valley where she was wide no cover throughout and felt the pinch late behind Midnight Devil. Unbeaten in two runs at Albury, one of the wins being at this trip. Dangerous.
1 Sparring (Bet Now: $SP.00) is the class of the field and class will carry him a long way towards victory. He ran two weeks ago over 955m at The Valley when back off the speed and chasing but kept finding the line in a good effort. Back to this level, he rates highly.
10 Projeto (Bet Now: $SP.00) comes here with fresh legs for Peter Maher, having not raced since Feb 3 at Caulfield when near the speed and fought on gamely in defeat behind Miss Icelandic. He will love a fast run 900m and should be strong at the end.
